204Jays Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 What's the book on Pop's stuff? Pitch mix, speeds? (Where does one find this?)
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I like Bass I feel he will help us. But when the games on the line and you got a runner on third with less than 2 outs. He gives up that groundball that sneaks through or that Medium fly ball that’s deep enough to score the runner. The guy who misses bats is stranding that guy at third with no advancement. And that’s ultimately the difference. That's why he's the guy you bring in for a clean 8th inning. Trevor Richards is the guy you bring in if you need a strikeout, assuming he's righted his ship; he's been good since returning from injury.

Richards will either get you the strikeout or give up a 3 run Homerun. Unfortunately it’s often been the ladder.

Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 What's the book on Pop's stuff? Pitch mix, speeds? (Where does one find this?) statcast - his fastball velocity is 89th percentile fangraphs - go to "pitch type" to see velocities and frequencies pitcherlist eno sarris is a good twitter follow
Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Richards has been really good coming in to clean up an inning and really bad going back out for a clean inning.

And that’s ultimately the difference. Given what Bass has accomplished in 2022 I would have zero issues with handing him the ball in that type of situation. He has two elite pitches including a slider that induces a 40.7% whiff rate. It appears as though his slider usage has increased as the season went on. He has been k'ing a ton of batters in July at 11.2 K/9. I checked out his game logs, and this has been going on since near the end of June. Since June 21 he has been on a tear, 0.51 ERA/1.42 FIP, 10.7 K/9, 0 home runs allowed. My major complaint at the last few deadlines is that the front office has acquired guys who were having shaky seasons and were basically reclamation projects, this season they have attained a guy who is trending upwards as the season goes on.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Hmmm I'd say Atkins did pretty good getting two relievers with a combined 1.7 fWAR and control past this season for a top prospect who is crumbling in AAA this season. Relievers are mostly voodoo though. Hopefully they come to TO and don't fall apart.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 So I guess Bass has a truly elite SL now Look how bad the Mets look against it All of these are in the dirt https://www.mlb.com/video/anthony-bass-strikes-out-the-side?q=Anthony%20Bass&cp=CMS_FIRST&qt=FREETEXT&p=0
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Lol the only home run he ever hit for the Bisons and it was a lazy 380 foot flyball. They are probably relieved he's gone.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 lmao all three sliders were like the exact same pitch They must tunnel well with a sinker or low fastball or something? Seems odd that 3 Mets players in a row would offer at those without seeing the sequence of pitches leading up to it.
Buster Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 is the party in the background for Pop leaving or for Groshans coming?
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Former Marlins in the current bullpen: Anthony Bass Zach Pop Yimi Garcia Adam Cimber Trevor Richards David Phelps
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 What's the book on Pop's stuff? Pitch mix, speeds? (Where does one find this?) Pop reminds me a lot of Brandon League, but with a little better command (and without the occasional triple digits). Interesting. I hope his blister issues won't be chronic. We don't seem to do well with those.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Former Marlins in the current bullpen: Anthony Bass Zach Pop Yimi Garcia Adam Cimber Trevor Richards David Phelps Hopefully Richards is removed from that list as soon as Pop and Bass report to the team.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 (edited) I quickly crunched the WAR numbers for the Jays pen after the recent Bass and Pop acquisitions for comparison sake to a few other great bullpens. I took the top 7 guys from the Braves and Orioles pen and compared to the top 7 guys of the new improved Jays pen. The Braves have an elite pen. Their top 7 relievers total up to 6.1 WAR. The Orioles top 7 relievers (before trading away Lopez) total up to 5.2 WAR. After today's acquisitions the Jays pen top 7 guys totals up to 4.7 WAR. Bringing Bass and Pop aboard removes crap like Richards, Banda, Beasley etc. from the pen and replaces them with guys who can reliably retire MLB hitters. Edited August 2, 2022 by max silver
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Hopefully Richards is removed from that list as soon as Pop and Bass report to the team. Pop is still under control through 2026 and this is just his 2nd year pitching in the majors. He should still have options remaining too.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Leave it to a woman to trade two good relievers for a guy with a .296 SLG in AAA! Amiright you guys? lmao Ooof

He was projected as the Marlin's closer in the off season..
jerb Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Hazel Mae @thehazelmae Jordan Romano on newly acquired reliever, Zach Pop (Brampton, Ont): "We worked out together in offseason back in 2018/19 in Mississauga with the Ontario #BlueJays. A good Canadian kid who throws hard." Romano added they went to a #BillsMafia game together with a mutual friend.
jerb Verified Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Kaitlyn McGrath @kaitlyncmcgrath Plan right now is for Anthony Bass and Zach Pop to meet #BlueJays in Minneapolis for series that begins Thursday. With early day game here in Tampa tomorrow makes more sense
