Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 This isn’t swing and miss Atkins. I feel Groshans is nothing but seems in terms of pure prospect ranking this is an overpay. Guess prices were rough
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Here is the analysis: Bass has been elite this year, is throwing his slider more than ever, and has a cheap option for 2023. He has actually been better than Jorge Lopez believe it or not. Pop throws 96-99 mph sinkers and it okay right now. Controllable for 15 more years. Has a good stuff rating on a seldom used slider - potential for more? Groshans sucks, Jays clearly don't think he will regain top prospect status or value The PTBNL is interesting...
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Author Posted August 2, 2022 Did anyone else just realize in the last 10 minutes that Bass doesn't suck this year?

Guess prices were rough Why would MLB teams give a s*** about "pure prospect ranking"? They don't at all. They have their own constantly evolving preference lists.

Guess prices were rough These relievers are the kinds of guys you could have gotten in the offseason for free without costing prospects. They are selling low on Groshans. I think everyone and their mother knew the BP was weak to start the season with a bunch of project players.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Did anyone else just realize in the last 10 minutes that Bass doesn't suck this year? Yep. He was basically vetrin presents when he was with us last time but he looks better now.

Yes but you don't have a crystal ball Did anyone in the offseason want Toronto to sign Anthony Bass, or trade for Jorge Lopez? When you wait to the deadline at least you have some comfort that the player you bring in has their s*** figured out this MLB season.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Did anyone else just realize in the last 10 minutes that Bass doesn't suck this year? The initial reaction to the trade was hating it simply because of how long we have valued Groshans while we already saw Bass before. Things have obviously flipped from that time but we'll see how effective he is for us.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 So what is Bass' contract situation? He has an option for next year? What is it ?
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 So what is Bass' contract situation? He has an option for next year? What is it ? Just $3M $3M Team Option, $1M Buyout option value may increase by up to $750k based on games finished in 2022

Pop has legit stuff and Bass has been MLB's 7th most valuable reliever by FWAR this season. Their value in the offseason is irrelevant when it comes time to upgrade a roster at the trade deadline. Groshans has produced an 82 WRC+ in AAA this season, he obviously has very little trade value at this point and this wasn't likely to improve moving forward, might as well cash in an extra piece for a massive overall upgrade to the pen.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Author Posted August 2, 2022 So what is Bass' contract situation? He has an option for next year? What is it ? 3M team option next year with 1M buyout
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Yep. He was basically vetrin presents when he was with us last time but he looks better now. I recall Bass was a very effective reliever for the club in 2020 during the covid shortened season.
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Author Posted August 2, 2022 Just $3M $3M Team Option, $1M Buyout option value may increase by up to $750k based on games finished in 2022 He's only finished 7 games, so no chance that gets triggered. What a stupid escalator.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 He's only finished 7 games, so no chance that gets triggered. What a stupid escalator. Yeah they can't use performance escalators so "games finished" is a workaround for "if he's the closer long enough"
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I recall Bass was a very effective reliever for the club in 2020 during the covid shortened season. He’s another middle reliever that will be asked to do more than that. He’s just another option in that mix. Its like going out trading for another Yimi Garcia. Hopefully a late inning reliever with a high K rate remains in the works.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 3M team option next year with 1M buyout Solid. I had some sticker shock on this one at first but the more you dive into it the better it looks. This time next year Groshans might not get us anything. Dude is ass in AAA this year with an 82 wRC+. Jays made a similar trade in dumping Austin Martin before the rest of the league caught on and it turns out he sucks too. I thought Bass was all vetrin presents but he's actually a solid middle reliever with an affordable year of control after this one. Pop looks good as is but it looks like he has an extra level that could get him into an effective late inning guy. Good trade Ross. Now let's see some more.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 you heard it here folks GOOD TRADE ROSS
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 yep, good trade Ross KEEP FEEDING HIM MORE COFFEE. WE'VE GOT 3.5 HOURS LEFT.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Leave it to a woman to trade two good relievers for a guy with a .296 SLG in AAA! Amiright you guys? lmao

Its like going out trading for another Yimi Garcia. Hopefully a late inning reliever with a high K rate remains in the works. Garcia has largely been excellent this season but it seems like a lot of people are slow to recognize this fact. His k rate is not exciting but has been increasing as the season goes on. Both Garcia and Bass have been been extremely hard to square up this season and this directly ties into their ability to keep the opposition off the board. Bass has legitimately been a top reliever in all of MLB this season and is a massive upgrade for this team. Go look at his statcast page, check out Fangraphs leaderboards for relievers as well. He's been borderline elite, makes next to nothing salary wise, and has another year of control. There's really nothing not to like about this acquisition.

Amiright you guys? lmao Groshans just never tapped into his power potential which was the most notable thing about him as High School prospect. His claim to fame was the monster home run he hit at Petco Park on MLB Network!

Right now he is a 4th or 5th piece in a big trade..... So right now you sell him for 1 guy that has been one of the most dominant relievers this year and a young guy who is an upgrade over half the pen with control or hold on to him to see if he can find power that he has never shown.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 We'd all love more swing and miss high velo relievers but so does everyone one else in the league. Ross is trying to exploit a market inefficiency by acquiring good relievers who are cheap because they don't throw hard. We don't have the best bullpen but it might be middle of the pack by the end of the deadline and we've barely poured any resources into it.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Wait a second here. Didn't Ross get that lady running the Marlins to give him Adam Cimber for Joe Panik last year? This woman has no idea what she's doing lmao GO ROSS GO
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Jays loves Marlins RPs. García, Cimber, Bass and Pop

But when the games on the line and you got a runner on third with less than 2 outs. He gives up that groundball that sneaks through or that Medium fly ball that’s deep enough to score the runner. The guy who misses bats is stranding that guy at third with no advancement. And that’s ultimately the difference.
