Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 Ok well significant trades is one route but I don't see that happening for close to another 2 months. Yeah I'd say you're right. I don't see any significant trades happening for position players either. Especially a DH/1B like Josh Bell. Doesn't work for how the Jays use the DH as a revolving door. I sure wish they'd upgrade the OF though, although they'll probably let Hernandez and Gurriel work through their hitting issues, which given their past performance makes total sense. Hopefully patience pays off and they go on a tear.

Someone like Tommy LaStella would be great

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 You guys do Kirk for Bryan Reynolds? Stats scouting it Yeah... he has three years of control left right? Only wart I see is, like a lot of guys, not having a great start with the deadball. Seems to be mostly batting average driven. You'd probably have to add in another piece though.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 You guys do Kirk for Bryan Reynolds? Provided the Jays believe Reynolds can play CF at an average rate for the next 3-4 years - then yes.

His numbers to start the year are down but that goes for a lot of players. If his numbers start to normalize in the next two months, I'd do it for sure. The only thing is there might be a chance they would do it straight up with their current stats. If Reynolds' stats normalize, we may have to throw something else, like Nathan Lukes.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 You guys do Kirk for Bryan Reynolds? Interesting.. switch hitting OF with control till 2026? Sure why not.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 You guys do Kirk for Bryan Reynolds? An emphatic yes. Jays would have to add quite a bit to that.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 Get rid of the jacket, it is the Devil. Being very serious. Look at the approach to start the season and go the other way or up the middle, just keep the line moving.. Then HR fever took over and was contagious.. Stop the stirring the drink s*** or whatever it is also for a double in the 3rd inning... Get Dante fake papers or whatever you need to do and get him back with the hitters.. This to me is not a talent or where they hit in the lineup issue (though can be part of it , pressure or wanting the big HR). This is a mental approach /mindset issue IMO. The goal should be keep the line moving, whether by single, walk, double etc, opposite field, go up the middle.. Too much trying to hit a HR... It killed us in the playoffs and part of 2016 and is killing us now apart from the odd game we come across s***** pitching..

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 Can’t believe its 2022 and people STILL think you need to stop hitting homeruns and play small ball. As if all the top teams aren’t also the top homerun hitting teams.

I see more wrong bad takes on players and what it takes to win from you then just about any poster on here. I didn’t say play small ball you dufus! I said they can’t have the approach you want to get a HR every time at bat. The HRs will come with a good hitting approach. This is a quote from Springer who is actually a professional ball player and a winner!! “Don’t try to hit the five-run homer if there’s nobody on base. Slow down, stay within ourselves, because there’s a long way to go and a lot of time to right the ship.”

There's no advantage to trying to hit the ball softer.

It is not hit the ball “ softer either”. It is trying to go the other way or up the middle instead of trying to pull the ball etc for a RHH. The objective should be to get a hit not just a HR. The HRs will always come with a good approach. Listen to how many players talk about they just went to the plate with a good approach and they ended up hitting a HR even though that was not their objective in the AB. Springer is right and it is noticeable. Too many guys are going up there trying to hit a HR instead of get a hit with as much EV as possible.

Agree to some extent but to have players change their approach can lead to problems. I'm not sure necessary, this is essentially the same team as last year. They will get it going.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 Most players approach is to go middle with power, there's only few exceptions and Jano is one on this team admittedly, Springer clearly meant pressing and trying to do too much, it was consciously visible to all of us, they'll be fine.

I'm not sure necessary, this is essentially the same team as last year. They will get it going. My contention is the Team started the year with the right approach. They were doing well and winning. There were some guys in a slump, but that is to be expected to start the season. Then they started to get some big HRs and walk -offs etc. There was a lot of celebrating and guys being the hero. This euphoria became contagious and they lost their way. They need to go back to the start of the season approach.

We've all been there, at least those of us that played ball.

I think the Jays like other teams spend a lot of time on swing mechanics behind the scenes. Successful hitting teams really focus on "barrelling" up the ball. Houston was all over this before others and focused on barrel which has a byproduct of good launch angle and exit velo. Springer is a more sophisticated hitter and it shows. His time with the Astros made him the player he is today. The Jays promptly hired Dave Hudgens when he became available hoping to capitalize on his knowledge of barrelling up the ball (what happened?). So far in May we haven't been barrelling up much and it shows. I'm sure the Jays are all over this. Barrell = Good launch angle = higher slugging %.....Homeruns will come. Top players at barrelling up this season so far: Judge, Stanton, Trout, Tellez...............Vladdy is 47th:( This team will come around eventually.

Dude, players pretty much thrive to hit the ball hard, even when they go the other way, he's not saying swing for the fences, well, I don't think he is?

Two strikes Should my approach be to hit the ball as hard as physically possible Or to try and barrel up the baseball? They are not mutually exclusive
