Assuming he is willing you have to play Springer in LF the majority of the time. Varsho was unreal in RF last year.

Atkins said Varsho is predominantly playing LF.

His entire career is a SSS for platoon splits

It takes like 1000+ PA against LHP for a LHB’s talent to be apparent

Varsho aside, so should a team should wait 4-5 years to decide on that? Lol. Like if someone has an OPS under .600 after 400 ABs they shouldn’t be like “wait a sec”

To help Varsho avoid facing lefties, i think we should bat Varsho higher when going against a RHP starting pitcher. If we put at least one or two big lefty mashers behind him then itll be less likely other teams bring in a lefty from the pen to shut him down.

Now who he should bat in front of is the hard part. Maybe having Chapman/Jansen behind him is enough? Him being put ahead of the others is a tough call.

Good for the season, but I think during the post-season you can bring in a pitcher for one batter. Anyways, hopefully he improves. I’ll be rooting for him even if I point out the flaws. But it won’t be good if we’re in a WC series and one game is against a LHP, and good one at that. Basically you’d have to sit him

I guess having 3 CF makes sense with the new defensive limitations. It will probably save a lot of runs and makes a ton of sense. The only thing I think we still need is a Dave Winfield type (like when he played here) but probably a lefty bat as DH-1b-lf. That and we should get a reasonable 3rd string catcher for AAA. You can't count on Jansen for 162 games.

This is a good point. Teams make decisions on splits way before a full sample.

I guess minor league stats? Or do they study the swing?

Between Jansen, Kirk and Varsho catching should be covered, no need for any of them to catch even 80 games if they are worried about wear and tear. If one of them gets hurt then you probably just have to deal with having a s***** backup catcher for a while, like basically every other team in baseball does every day. We've got a few in Buffalo like Chris Bec and Stevie Berman who could fill that role, but hopefully it's not needed.

Also, Biggio is your lefty DH/1B/LF, but also 2B. Sure he's not Going to give you a 140 wRC+, but he should settle in in the 110 range with the shift outlawed, and he's likely only getting maybe 2 starts a week with this roster, if that.

Yeah, something. I don’t mean Varsho, as I only looked at 2021 but in general, you’re not going to wait multiple mlb years to determine that… I mean, I can see if a guy like Varsho is still valuable, you let him keep poking at it other than when a tough lefty is on the mound, or it’s a critical game against LHP. That makes sense

No

On the stat side you just regress the splits

But they would all incorporate scouting opinions too and granular data like if a guy gets just f***ing destroyed by lefty sliders maybe you can tell sooner that he’s hopeless

Well s***, I just saw that the Giants signed Taylor Rogers.

Maybe the Jays can get Chafin?

I was just looking at the relief market. It would be nice to get him as a lefty for the pen. I wonder what he would cost.

Varsho should be 3rd string for an emergency, but probably won't start at catcher. I just think we need a guy stored at AAA is all. You may be right about Biggio playing that role, I'd just like somebody who can produce a little more to bat cleanup. We need somebody for the bench still. Robbie Grossman as of-dh makes the most sense to me.

Didn't we get a catcher off the dodgers in the minor league rule 5, he could be the primary back up right now.

Kekai Rios

He's had 10 PA's in AA in his career

The Jays only have two catchers on the 40 man, Jansen and Kirk. Varsho is the defacto 3rd string catcher right now.

Bec and Ellison are slated to start as the AAA catchers right now

Lots of off season left though

Looks great to me. I think Varsho makes sense hitting 5th, high power low avg and the only lefty threat.

Could see the Vlad-Bo-Kirk portion being shuffled a few times throughout the season until they find something that works. I’d even think about having Kirk hit 2nd

Bo won’t survive a collision with Kirk on the base paths

In that case, i’d agree that a catcher for triple A would make sense that is somewhat of an upgrade. That’s tricky of course.

Kirk is a pretty ideal #2 hitter. Lots of on-base, lots of contact. He won't have to run much if Vlad gets back to his 2021 numbers hitting third.

Apparently the two front runners for Nathan Eovaldi are the Angels and a "mystery AL East team".

Please be the Jays. He'd be a perfect #5.

That would be wild

Not gonna want a 1 year deal however and we wouldn’t give up a pick for a 1 year rental IMO. Unless we don’t mind having all 5 SP

Signed past 2024 and blocking the dragon.

Joey Cueto fits the bill on a 1 year 10 million deal at age 37-38. Maybe with some 1-2 million in incentives on innings pitched.

There is an open spot on the 40 man roster now

Wonder if that means anything. Like a planned signing

One thing I have noticed from the last couple of transactions the Jays have made, KK was saying that some players including Bo Bichette have reached out to him and it made him feel welcome. Today I just saw Varsho talking about being traded to the Jays, he said Bo has reached out to him and it made him feel like he's part of the family. I like Bo alot but I know sometimes I can be critical of him, but I have to admit he is taking leadership by reaching out to the new guys. Sometimes its the small things that can make a difference, like its not like its the Bradley Zimmer of the team reaching out, its one of thee main dudes and as a new player on the team, it makes you feel more comfortable, more at home, so good on Bo and whomever else is doing that.

Bo is a professional.
