What about their 2 catching prospects I mentioned? Both got mlb ab last year

Ok I looked them up. Two 45 FV prospects so nothing too special. Of the two, Diaz could throw a wrench into my plans but Lee screams backup unless his defense is elite but from the scouting reports I've seen it doesn't appear to be. I think two years of Jansen fits them pretty well still.

Ya I don’t think the Astros catcher prospects are going to prevent them from trying to add a bonafide guy. I wonder how aggressive they’ll be on Willson Contreras this offseason?

Bassitt's AAV might be a touch too high for the Jays. Eovaldi, Tyler Anderson, and plenty of other options are out there though.

Corey Kluber on a one-year deal. Shapiro/Atkins know him from their days in Cleveland.

I’m seeing 3/60 for bassit. I’d think that would be doable

For an arm who is going to be 34-years-old next season, no thank you.

A lot of other guys who you can sign on one or two year deals and at a better price IMO.

34 year old Bassit for three years is worth a risk over a soon to be 37year old Kluber for one year. Both are risky, but Kluber is about to fall off a cliff.

Kluber posted a 3.0 WAR and 3.57 FIP this past season. The last two years he's been in the AL East and he's been quite good. On a one-year contract with him as your No. 4-5 starter, that's not bad at all.

Ya I’m not sure what their payroll constraints will be. Theyre gonna have to drop to another 20m if they want to retain Verlander again. I’d think he will get more than one year as well guaranteed this time. Dude is a machine.

Kluber is good again? Totally missed that. Really just watch jays games

K/9 down 2 from his career average but his bb/9 was about 1/2 of his career average.

I think with Kikuchi/white starts out of the 5 hole and a question mark in berrios, I think the new SP can’t be risky. This is how we end up with roarks though.

I don't see much point in chasing Bassitt. Just seems like a landmine.

I'd stay very involved in guys like Sean Manaea in case they want to sign a one year pillow contract. Toronto is starting to look like a decent launchpad for SPs who want to position for a big FA contract. Look at Ray, Matz, Stripling.

SP free agent pile looks pretty deep this year. Lots of names in the middle who might settle for one year deals.

Syndergaard, Stripling, Manaea, Smyly, Quintana, David Price (?), Paxton, Lyles, Kluber, Hill, Heaney, Greinke, Eflin, Gibson, Clevinger, Carrasco (?), Bundy, Boyd, Archer, Anderson

Obviously most of those guys get decent deals but guaranteed some of them settle for one year things. Just get whichever one falls.

Don't repeat the Kikuchi mistake and get desperate for someone.

I think Biggio could be a good trade chip to get a reliever. The Jays are obviously down on him and the teams seems to have him below Espinal and Merrifield. We've got Barger waiting in the wings in AAA. I like that he bats left-handed and would love to see him get more of a shot in a platoon role but the Jays must have their reasons for burying him on the depth chart.

The shift ban is only going to help him so that could further entice teams. It would make a ton of sense for a non-contender with a hole at 2B to trade a decent 7th inning arm for him. Or a contender with a surplus of bullpen arms but with a weak bench and little AAA infield depth. Could maybe get an interesting AAA starting pitcher as well.

Any idea on how they come up with those numbers?

I know Fangraphs does a crowdsourcing article

every year which I always look forward to.

Click on the projected salary next to the name and it shows the details on that

Yeah I'm starting to talk myself out of Bassitt as well. It'd be a total buy high on a guy entering his Age 34 season. Probably takes 3 years to get him, maybe even 4. Pass.

If I'm the Jays I might limit myself to one or two year deals at which point hopefully Tiedemann and Zululeta are ready to step into the rotation.

With that said, maybe Carrasco would be a good target. Ended the year poorly after an oblique injury but I did read an article on Fangraphs about him that he needs to ditch the sinker and go with a Four Seam-Slider-Change combo. Doesn't seem like there are many guys left where you can change the pitch mix and get massively different results a la Lance Lynn several years ago but Carrasco could squeeze out some extra value by dumping that 4th pitch. He only threw it 12% of the time but it was by far his worst pitch.

I’d just hold onto him for another year. Whit is only here for another year and espinal is best used only vs LHP. I still believe in biggio as the strong side of a 2b platoon. I have Whit taking tapia spot as of now with biggio and espinal at 2b primarily.

Let barger get half a season in aaa or come up when an injury occurs. I don’t think biggio value has much to lose at this point.

I see now. That's actually not a terrible calculation.

I just came across it today as I was hungry for some off-season ideas to dig into. It does break down its reasoning pretty well so prob worth using to mess around with. Prob find some stuff to quibble with like how they have nimmo being worth like 11 or so where another site said 20

I think that Bassit is the exact opposite of Kikuchi and Tanner Rourke.

Bassit has been sneaky good and giving you 150 plus innings on average. He would only be 36 at the end of a 3 yr deal and that is not super old for an SP.

Kickuchi and Tanner were turds they were trying to polish or signed using a strategy of pray and hope.

Bassit is exactly the mature and reliable presence you want in our rotation. If we signed Bassit we still have a spot for a young stud to complement Manoah.

Why gamble on reclamation contracts or pillow deals etc on pitchers who sucked in pitchers parks.

We have a consistent sneaky good SP available for nothing but market price.

Good point. They’re definitely going to wanna keep Verlander and Contreras probably worth 18M or so. That might make Jano or a lower cost C option higher priority.

It’s too bad Berrios is looking like a land mine right now. Having three guys heading into this offseason would be a lot more comfortable than 2.5.

I did not mean to imply that Bassitt would be like signing Kikuchi. It would be more like signing Ryu.

I still don’t really want to give Chris Bassitt that kind of money

Toronto already has a somewhat uncomfortable amount of money invested in pitchers…

I've been trying to get into direct contact with Atkins to tell him my Astros trade but I've heard through the grapevine that he is no longer pouring over my messages on BJMB because of my criticism of John Schneider. If anyone has his email address or phone number please PM me ASAP. But after we complete my Astros trade, move Kikuchi to the bullpen and sign Chris Bassitt here is the pitching staff of the 2023 AL East Champs.

1. Gausman

2. Manoah

3. Bassitt

4. Berrios

5. Urquidy

Yeah If that deal doesnt go though, who is the catcher for the Cardinals now that Yadi is retired? Do they have a need in that position?

John Mozeliak did say the Cardinals will look at external options for behind the plate.

Willson Contreras is a big FA name. Other options are Christian Vazquez and Omar Narvaez. Blue Jays could definitely be a trading partner.
