RobinThicc Verified Member Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 Bellinger is an AZ product, wonder if that will effect his decision. Apparently he wants 20 million a year lol
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 $20 million for projected 1.8 WAR? lol f*** off

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 If Toronto wants Cody Bellinger I have trouble seeing why he would sign almost anywhere else. He'd be the starting CF here, clear cut with lots of leash, in a good division for hitting, in a good lineup. Even if Toronto is offering less money it might make sense to play here.

The one hang up is that Toronto wants to win a World Series next year. Belly will only sign somewhere that guarantees him a starting role all year long, no matter how bad he is. The Jays may not be willing to do that, while the Cubs and Giants may, if they don't anticipate contending.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 For one year I don’t mind them overpaying. The Jays have set money on fire on worst things in recent years.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 Why would the player want a 1 year deal...it is Boras. It will be a 1 year deal for too high $$$ with a player opt out for year 2. If he sux he stays, if he is good he opts out.

Its not just show me contract for himself. He needs to show the league when he can do. No team wants to be on the hook for a big number if he continues to suck with the bat.

Jays should absolutely sign him to a flier.

Besides, if he’s THAT bad that we would consider benching him he won’t be getting any offers for 2024

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 You answer your own question in there. You donÂ’t want the guy taking a walk but if heÂ’s not going to lay off the Balls, why throw him strikes. Ie Vlad The same logic applies even with guys like Soto, who lay off balls. It's not that you don't want the guy taking a walk, it's that you don't want him on base. Soto was pitched really tough last year and hit .240 .400 .440... if they groove him pitches he might hit .300 .420 .500, grooving pitches (when there is a great hitter protecting him) is counter productive because even though he'll walk a little less he might get on base more with a higher average.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2022 Posted December 6, 2022 Atkins is asleep nah, he's about to sign Kodai

In pee wee baseball they teach you that the worst thing is a free pass. Stays true all the way through. Of course they can hit if you throw a strike lol. It’s ok we walked the leadoff hitter this inning because he might have hit it lol

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 What a turd. Hope he WARs like -5 next year and has to sign with the Blue Jays for league min in 2024. Any team that was significantly interested in him should have just traded for him. I can only assume the Jays were not willing to go anywhere near that dollar figure (and probably the right decision to do so).

Yeah that's steep for what hes done the past few seasons, but the Cubs can both afford to pay that and have him play everyday on a 1 year deal and hope he does better.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 It will take the form of a $12MM salary and a $5.5MM buyout on a mutual option for 2024 - sneaky Boras. Gets him his full arb at worst. Either way the mutual option will not be triggered. If he does even remotely well, like.. 2WAR or higher, he opts out, if he's what he was this year or worse, the Cubs opt out.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 Hilarious how all the Bellinger fanboys wanted him on some sort of 12 million dollar deal with incentives that could push it to 20. He signs for 17.5 and they all act like they are glad he didn't sign.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 I am yes, $17.5M guaranteed is too much. On a one year deal it's barely any different than 12M + incentives. And 12 is just a number that was thrown about. If 12 is ok, I'm sure 14 would have been too.
