Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 That's fair. But honestly I don't give a f*** what any manager says to the media. It's all complete and utter ********. It's like IG filters man - it's all fake and meaningless. IMO, he shouldn't gain or lose credibility for the quality of the made up BS he says in an interview. Do you think Chucky is all rainbows and sunshine to the media and behind the scenes he's ripping the players' *******s? Lol yeah right the guy is softer than a roll of Charmin toilet paper

In many cases I agree but all sports have some managers/coaches that are far more insightful and open. And as a result they have and give the org cred. I live in Calgary and as one example Darryl Sutter is money. He just doesn't give out empty vessel quotes and he is candid/blunt. They still haven't won anything lol, but they get more rope. You didn't pay attention to and respect Gibby's media interactions more than Charlies? I did.

I don't pay attention to any sports interviews. I find almost all of them to be completely pointless. I stopped watching pre and post game shows years ago. That said, I loved Gibby and enjoyed his personality. But interview skills are REALLY low on my priority list for a manager.

Lol yeah right the guy is softer than a roll of Charmin toilet paper I don't think ripping players new *******s is a good approach. Yelling at adults is often a terrible approach typically used by people without the necessary skills to be a leader. Set expectations and hold them accountable. Is Chucky doing this behind closed doors? I have no idea - nor do you. The FO should have a pulse on that. I don't love Chucky - but I also don't think the blame should be solely on him. I'm just not convinced this team is good enough - especially with this many top players underperforming.

I have a feeling he doesn’t approach the players directly at all unless he’s taking them out of the game or telling them they are being sent down. Even in the dugout you see John Schneider and Pete Walker having more conversations with the players.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 I don't think ripping players new *******s is a good approach. Wow let me guess you're a Zoomer?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Chucky can play the bongos, juggle and teach tap dancing classes after the games for all I care as long as the team is WINNING. But if we aren't WINNING then things like playing dress up (the home run jacket) and pranks involving sunflower seeds need to STOP. In fact I wouldn't let them even eat sunflower seeds until they start winning, let alone the pranks. Chaw should be allowed but veterans only. Rookies need to focus on the game. The nerds upstairs can assemble the greatest set of strat-o-matic cards the game has ever seen, but unless Chucky starts getting them ready for the games they aren't going to win. Period.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Wow let me guess you're a Zoomer? I had to look that up FFS. And no, I'm not a zoomer. Yelling at adults gets old fast and people just tune you out.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 I think constant yelling players will tune you out. But if you address the legit issues that shouldn’t be an issue. I would imagine the position players at this point have zero confidence in the bullpen. That has to be draining feeling knowing your team has zero ability to hold onto leads. Now the Jays do constantly f*** up chances to add on runs. But the offense is normally good enough to win most nights. Right now if we don’t get a very very good start the chances we win is extremely low.

But there are several approaches to successfully do this that don't include yelling at adults or embarrassing or calling out players in front of the group. Typically people who lack the skills or abilities to handle difficult situations revert to yelling.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 If they keep slumping Charlie's going to get the axe. That's just what happens when a team is underperforming. Boone almost got it last year and look at him now.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Who was that blond 1b we shipped to the Brewers for Estrada. Not Overbay, after him. I heard he was partly shipped out for being a clubhouse team/issue. Adam L??

Well you know I'm same. I never ever tune in just for them but today Charlie was played on Fan 960, Calgary Sports Morning Show I occasionally listen to in the morning, and it was played because it sounded so bizarre.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 This team has been a joke from the start. We knew there were flaws when we had a negative run differential while being 10 games over .500. Brightside, team has talent so we're obviously not far off. It's hilarious how the only winning this franchise has done are when Shatkins were totally against the moves in 2015 lol. The honeymoon phase with this management is over... they've had 7 years to put this together and we've yet to even make the playoffs. I don't want to hear any more excuses... just do better or gtfo. Having Charlie as your Manager during these winning times is probably the most frustrating part of their tenure.
Benito Verified Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Yes I'm sure that's who he meant Was felt he was lazy Adam Lind was a clubhouse problem? Interesting. All I can seem to recall was the guy had zero personality and quiet. Just figured he was one of those guys no one knew existed. Also, why did he retire again? Looking at his stats, his final year looked pretty good.

In terms of the offence it's speculation 100% but my guess is the FO thought it would be even better and cover up for lack of arms depth/effectiveness until they could add at deadline. Most of our guys aren't where we hoped they would be at the plate first half. It was a risky calculation but I think that was it.
BlueJaysFever Verified Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Team led the league in June in offense and still only went 15-13. No amount of offense can consistently overcome below average pitching. Offenses slump, pitching less so. Pitching carried this team in April while the offense was awful and they finished with a 14 -8 record. Offense flipped the switch in May but have gone 31-34 since. Getting pitching prior to the deadline has to be the mandate.

Here comes the "a 1 game WC game isn't making the playoffs" and "they made the ALCS in 2016 because of the team the previous FO created" arguments to cover up an incredibly inaccurate statement.

Jays333 Verified Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Its one thing to scream and yell and another to command the team and command respect. Charlie does none of the above
BlueJaysFever Verified Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 How can you possibly ascertain such a thing? Screaming and yelling is a ridiculous assertion as a motivational tactic. Seriously.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Extremely frustrating season so far, but progression isn't always linear. The Jays won 91 games last season (2021) and they didn't tear it down until 2018 (JD trade) so it's been 3-4 seasons, not 7. At most it's been 4 seasons, from 2017 (76 wins) to 2021 (91 wins). Yeah they didn't make the playoffs, but they were a 91 win team with a +183 run differential. How many times has a team that good missed the playoffs in the wild card era? That's a pretty quick turn around. Hopefully the lull this season is just a hiccup on their way to true contender status.

Dammit I had forgotten just how good they were last year. f***ing moron Charlie and a couple terrible bullpen arms (Dolis/Chatwood/Hand/Borucki) cost us a playoff spot. Jays were rolling at the end of the season too. Could have done damage in the playoffs. Ugh
Omar Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 While everyone is aware that the Darth Vader school of management is now an anachronism there has to be consequences. We’ve witnessed some absurd mental errors on the base pads and in the field this year. I haven’t seen a player sitting the next game after blunders and I have been paying attention. It is apparent Charlie manages players in such a way that they fear no repercussions no matter how big the gaffe. Good managers don’t manage out of fear of their direct reports. It is so obvious that he is afraid of giving Bo a rest day like the rest of the team because Bo would call him out on it. So Bo doesn’t get rest days and everyone else does. The Laissez faire approach to managing a ball club doesn’t work. It never has. He is a terrible skipper.
BlueJaysFever Verified Member Posted July 11, 2022 Posted July 11, 2022 Bo is young, a super athlete, and basically never gets injured. We can provide context to these narratives. If Charlie was afraid to manage for fear of being called out, do you think he would ever pull Manoah from a game?

Which MLB managers sit starters after a base running blunder, after missing the cut off man or making a mental error? How often do they bench players for this? Every time it happens? I think I remember LaRussa doing that this year? or maybe that was because someone flipped a bat?

I recall JD Davis, Alex Bohm recently. Javi Baez was a big one as well. Happens a lot. Managers don’t come out and say why but the players know.
