Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 I think hit tool is just more useful than plate discipline when scouting high schoolers and international guys as well. You can see if someone can hit from looking at their swing and their ability to make contact. ItÂ’s harder to tell a good eye because there are so many factors. Like the pitching might be so bad that they are good enough to hit outside the zone as a conscious choice (you canÂ’t walk your way off the island). You donÂ’t know if they will show that they can narrow their focus against better pitching, but you can tell (more so) if some 14 year old in the Dominican can hit. Agreed when you are scouting high schoolers and stuff. However the context of Vlad getting an 80 hit tool was after his age 18 season when he hit .320 between two levels of a ball with line drive power. Then he hit .400 for a couple of months in aa which ramped up expectations even more. I didn't hear about him having an '80 hit tool' when he was signed... it came about as a combination of scouting and performance. I'm not a scout. Just an avid fan who watches a lot of games and checks the box scores (well these days the fangraphs pages). So when I heard 80 hit tool it put some expectations in my head, which were perhaps unfair. Frank Thomas 90s. Edgar Martinez 90s. Manny Ramirez. Pujols. Delgado 2000/2003 but every year... He may be another Delgado, a level down from the guys who can do it every year.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 I went to a Texas series (in TX) a couple years back and was totally shocked by the amount of Jays fans. Was weird. Not sure if fluke
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2022 Posted June 1, 2022 Imagine Bongo Chucky trying to stare down Frank Thomas LOL

Montoyo wants gurriel's batting performance to decline on purpose by leaving gurriel on the bench many times. Montoyo is like gibbons and other bluejays managers since 1993. All bluejays managers want the team to lose on purpose since 1993.

Gurriel has reportedly been dealing with recurring hamstring issues, so unless you want that to morph into something more serious it may be best to learn to live with him needing a few more days off than is ideal lineup construction wise.

Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Detroit took 4 out of 5 from Twins, and Twins have lost their last 7 out of 10. We are definitely riding the momentum! We have Gausman on the mound for one of them and then hopefully we get the good Kikuchi and Berrios. Concerned about Berrios in a sense since Twins would know him very well. I belief.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Not sure what I was expecting when I looked at the team's wRC+ leaders but it wasn't this. This deadball environment got me f***ed up, lmao.

Solaxys Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Kepler and MeGill being away is kind of huge for us Thielbar and Pagan have been self-destructive of late, so that sucks, but Twins bullpen has been overused of late, so it is quite thin. --- Kind of unfortunate we get to face Smeltzer 3rd game but we've been pretty good at beating up good pitchers - so lets keep that going.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Guess Stripling going to be a starter for quite some time. Sucks not a single guy in AAA could breakthrough so far.

Pearson maybe comes up and does the piggyback thing with Strip perhaps, which also allows Pearson to stretch out a bit at the same time. Might not happen as he’s still so fresh off the DL, but one thing the Jays do not have is SP depth.

Carlos Correa on the Covid-IL and likely will miss the series as well.

Damn, he was pitching quite well since coming back (minus the last start). Im ok with Strip getting more starts, he’s looked good this year

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Ryu will never pitch for the Jays again
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2022 Posted June 3, 2022 Damn, he was pitching quite well since coming back (minus the last start). Im ok with Strip getting more starts, he’s looked good this year He is ok for a spot start every now and then against the right teams. I fear he will get exposed if you make him a day to day SP, which is pretty much what I thought would happen pre-season with Ryu's injury history/age/ second half performance..
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 Guess Stripling going to be a starter for quite some time. Sucks not a single guy in AAA could breakthrough so far. That sucks. Signing an aging soft tosser was always a bit of a risk. 4.5 fWAR from him so far. Gonna cost us $67mm over 4 with the shortened 2020. Hope he can come back this year but he just may be done.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2022 Posted June 4, 2022 No team was willing to go more than 3 years on Ryu if I recall, and 3 years was probably the right amount. Jays had to go higher to get him. Hopefully he can be useful when he's back on the mound but he was always a health risk, never mind age.
