connorp Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 He’s chummy with the former President. It’ll never happen. All the modern woke writers outside of baseball would make that link and it just wouldn’t make for good press for mlb
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted November 13, 2022 Posted November 13, 2022 (edited) Pete Rose is 100 percent a HOF. I’m tired of the politics keeping deserving players out. Your there for your achievements. It isn’t the good guy Hall Of Fame. And if is maybe they should pull out all of the POS already in the HOF. Starting with notorious POS Ty Cobb. Bonds and Clemens also very much need to be in. Edited November 13, 2022 by Jonn

Its time to split the hall into: The hall of best stats The hall of good guys Because clearly right now if you don’t meet both requirements then you aren’t included. Oh and the “good guy” requirement only became a thing like 40 years ago, so if you were a Klan member in the 30s it didn’t matter.

That's not political, that's something that should be discouraged at all costs. I think the message has been sent, however, and Rose should be in the HOF.

Politics is undoubtedly a big part of it now, as evidenced by Schilling, who should’ve gone in before a lot of guys. Not sure if Rose would even be considered for reinstatement, but even if so, 100% politics would keep him out. Trump already made tweets pleading his case. For sure, if he got in he would do a victory dance tweet and put egg all over mlb’s face. But you’re right in the first place, it’s not politics. Pretty serious offense

At least the other guys were doing it when others were doing it and weren’t failing tests He didn’t though?? The only rumored failed test is from the 2003 report (the same one Ortiz allegedly tested positive) He was mainly suspended for his involvement in the Biogenesis thing, not for failing any tests.

Hmm.. perhaps I misremember. Something about him still rubs me the wrong way, where I don’t feel it’s the same as Clemens or Bonds. I guess I’m like a HOF voter.

But based on numbers alone, Arod is one of the greatest players of all time and deserves to be in the hall

But based on numbers alone, Arod is one of the greatest players of all time and deserves to be in the hall Bonds and Clemens are arses but Arod is more of a douche. I guess I’m ok with the former, and not the latter… I was wrong on him testing positive twice but it does seem he failed a test in 2003. Then the big suspension came a decade later. Even though not a failed test, it was pretty obvious he cheated and I think he’s admitted it. So he did kind on get caught twice.
BCZ Verified Member Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 Jose Trevino plays half a season, only throws out 33% and wins GG... what a face-palm. Reminds me of Rafael Palmeiro winning the GG in 1999 after playing only 28 games at 1B (epic fail). (Repost as I posted to this to the wrong thread before... I'm not all here this morning).

Well, maybe because he was the best behind the plate and it wasn't even close?

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 He fielded HALF the games... this is like saying a marathon runner that runs the fastest for half the race and then quits should win............ derp He's a catcher, man? Only 7 players had more innings than him... Derp! Look at DRS and FRM numbers, it isn't close. https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=c&stats=fld&lg=al&qual=350&type=1&season=2022&month=0&season1=2022&ind=0&team=0&rost=0&age=0&filter=&players=0&startdate=2022-01-01&enddate=2022-12-31&sort=4,d
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 RE: Trevino okay but it's not that bad 23rd in PA 15th in innings caught 10th in games played / appeared in #1 in accumulated defensive value by a wide margin If he's not eligible for the award because of playing time then it's literally ~10 catchers competing for it. Or less. That's kind of absurd to set the playing time bar that high for catchers, where almost none of them play more than 80% of the games.

Might be 2025 but yeah, cannot wait until the ump shows are a thing of the past and the last out of the World Series gets decided by a ball/strike challenge.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 Cubs release Jason Heyward. One has to wonder if his career is over. So sad as he was such a talented guy who just couldn't put it all together. I still remember his rookie season when he took the league by storm as a 20 year old. He was a true 5 tool OFer then with a fantastic eye at the plate. I always assumed he'd be in the HOF one day.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 14, 2022 Posted November 14, 2022 Will be interesting to see what they have up their sleeves in advance of tomorrow. Jays also in a but if a pinch with the 40 man roster so I wouldn't be surprised to see something on the smaller side from our end too.

I bet he would less of a mystery if his entire first 6 years were during the Statcast era. Looks like he just had a chronic problem barreling up the ball, for his entire career. Like, he had a 2.8% barrel rate the year before the Cubs gave him the big deal.

Always seemed like one of those guys who just needed a swing change and he'd become a 130+ wRC+ monster.

Always seemed like one of those guys who just needed a swing change and he'd become a 130+ wRC+ monster. This is why the people complaining about Vlad's ground ball rate and swing flaws aren't nuts. Heywards fly ball and hard hit rates peaked when he was 22. His walk rate peaked at 20. Vlad is better as a hitter, but if he followed Heyward's trajectory he'd just sort of be an OK hitter with one big season at 22. Still hoping Vlad follows more of a Gary Shefield path, slow start, big season, a couple of average seasons, then repeats the big season 10 times.
