Dr.Tubes Verified Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 I can never forgive Montoyo for that Espinal bunt call. And because it's like the tenth two strike bunt call during his tenure I can also never forgive Shatkins. Just thoroughly sad. Downgrading my opinion of Shatkins a full letter grade. Pathetic tactical decision making. 100% agreement here, the guy just knows all the exact wrong moves to make. As an aside If i were a fringe bench player like Espinal i would get my bunting and any other overlooked skill on lockdown to try and make myself more valuable to the team. I know it’s just a guess based on body language but he does not bunt well and gives me the impression he doesn’t think he should have to.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Someone pay memmo to have Gibby do a video saying "Mark, I'm ready to return and lead this team to a championship. I don't bunt much and never with 2 strikes because that's f***ing moronic. Send Chucky packing, I'm on my way".
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 With the infield defense shifted so extreme to protect against the bunt, Espinal probably is actually a good hitter to have at the plate. He doesn’t strike out much and he hits a lot of ground balls. Any batted ground ball in that situation had to have had a very high xBA. This seemed like common sense to everyone but the person that mattered. Grichuk should have stole 3rd base without a throw or at least let Espy swing. Just a stupid manager who doesn't know how to adjust within the game.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 I feel like its time for one of the vets (Semien??) to tell off Montoyo. Stop being a f***ing idiot bunting with 2 strikes. There’s a reason literally nobody else does this.

I wouldn’t have had him bunting at all after he showed it. Let alone with 2 strikes. He was facing the perfect guy to hit a ball on the ground. Egregious night for Montoyo. And therefore Jays fans. I blame Atkins. We spend all the money on high performance teams and training and all the latest equipment and analytics analysis etc. etc. and then we allow this “old school” monkey f***ing ********?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Montoyo is a crappy manager. 2 strikes bunt and 2 int walks against s*** hitters 2 strike bunt sure, but Lowe and Wendle aren't s*** bud. Retardo really f***ed up in the top of the 11th, that's where we lost this game.

I thought Espinal actually had some good efforts there but these pitchers are throwing 100 mph gas. Dropping a bunt down the line is basically impossible but these dinosaur managers think it’s the 80s still where pitchers are throwing 91 mph fastballs and 74 mph curves.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 To add to my last post though, the Rays know how retarded Montoyo is so they kept the extreme shift on anyway bc they knew Montoyo was hellbent on a bunt. That HAD to have had an effect on Espinal. He would have had to have had a perfect bunt to be successful there and he could see it. I'm sure it did. Lots of pressure when the bunt has to be absolutely perfect. We had several opportunities to win that game. In addition to Montoyo being s***, the players didn't execute at all.

DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Was posting on a hockey forum, and out of nowhere someone said their team's coach was almost as bad as montoyo..even hockey fans s***ing on montoyo lol.

Legit it is extremely hard to bunt modern pitches. It's all 96 mph above the zone or wicked spin breaking away. Tv broadcasters like Buck and Pat have their heads too far up their vaginas to acknowledge this. Good for you Buck, you could bunt a 88 mph sinker in play. Whoop Dee pop.

I would guess some of the best at it are National League starting pitchers. I totally agree that it is very difficult especially if it isn’t ever worked on. My call would have been for Espinal to swing away but unfortunately I nor about a million others couldn’t make that decision for chuckles.
ShowtimeBelli Verified Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Montoyo, asked if he thought about starting the runners or taking the bunt off in the 11th with the infielders crashing in on Espinal: “No. No. He’s got to get the bunt down. Just bunt it to third. We only needed one run.”

ShowtimeBelli Verified Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 I'd respect the decision a lot more if he owned it. Instead, he doubles down. I can't sleep. I'm so infuriated. I need a drink.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Yup it’s extremely hard. But to their credit Pat was going nuts on Montoyo When Pat Tabler criticizes your managerial decisions and he’s actually right, you know you’re a moron.

A quick glance at baseball reference shows Ryu had more successful sac bunts in 2019 then Espinal has had in his career including minors. I recall watching a YouTube video about the success Ryu, Meada and Kershaw had in 2019 in regards to sac bunting. So get Ryu to lay down the bunt use Gurriel and Biggio accordingly off the bench and if Montoyo’s theory that a successful bunt gets the win there you have it.

Even if a manager were whacky enough to try this, you probably don't want a fat guy who pulled his ass a few weeks ago trying to leg out a bunt in a game-on-the-line type situation.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 I just can't believe how f***ing stupid our manager is. Bunting with two strikes at any time other than a pitcher batting in an interleague game is completely indefensible. But doing it with a runner on second base in extra innings is a fireable offence. There's already a runner on second, if the batter gets a hit there's a change the game is over instantly. I wasn't thrilled about the Biggio pinch hitting appearance either with the rash of strikeouts recently. And to top it all off he does the reverse, instead of gifting the Rays extra outs he instead decides to grant them two extra baserunners with the worst pitcher in his bullpen on the mound. I can typically deal with Charlie's stupidity but this is getting to be too much.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 Montoyo completely out managed in a close game again. He just doesn’t have what it takes to do this job competently. He’s costing the team games again and again. It's not just that he was outmanaged, he actively hurt his team on several occasions.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 I'm torn between rooting for the Jays to win, and wanting them to be bad enough so that Atkins gets rid of Montoyo. I'll take missing the playoffs in 2021 if it means Buntoyo is gone and the 2022-2025 team is managed by someone worthy of being a big league manager. I don't want to live in a reality where this young core is managed by that stooge during the peak of their run.

I’ll follow and keep an eye on them as always but i think I’m done watching games while he is there. I was fine with Dolis loss game before last. Don’t blame Buntoyo for that. That was just baseball. But I can’t invest hours in a game, only to watch a buffoon make bad baseball decisions that decrease our probability of winning, due to some old warped notion of the game. This team is too good and too close for that. The L clouded some amazing performances by some of our players.
