Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 He was a frustrating player. Very good batted ball profile as well as sprint speed but weighed down by inexplicable defense.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 I thought we were losing him for nothing so this is a pleasant surprise lol.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Author Posted February 16, 2021 I thought we might be able to get a ham sandwich for him even though he's out of options and sure enough Atkins did. He's good enough to be on a major league roster.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 So much talent but had no idea how to play baseball.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Maybe a second change of scenery will do it. Brewers now have a small bench collection of misfit toys: Fisher, McKinney, Vogelbach, Daniel Robertson.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Author Posted February 16, 2021 He might actually get some decent playing time. Avisail Garcia is listed as their starting RF right now.

In order to play RF, you need to be able to catch flyballs lol. Seems like he needs to thrive on become a great hitter first to even be worth getting reps defensively.

The defensive issues should get resolved. In several months we might be wishing we kept Fisher, traded Grichuk for whatever.

Fisher has the platoon advantage so I could see him forcing his way into a decent share of ABs.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 He was a frustrating player. Very good batted ball profile as well as sprint speed but weighed down by inexplicable defense. He had a O - contact rate of 47.5% league average is 66%. His z contact rate was 76.6% and league average rate is 87%. His overall contact rate was 66.1% and league average is 80%. He actually had a good eye and didn't swing at a lot of bad pitches. His actual ability to put the bat on the ball was awful. His eye hand co-ordination was awful. He had some power to make up for some of that but it wasn't just he defense that was lacking in his game.

No one's taking that contract unless we pay majority of it down so I don't think it was a choice there really. And I haven't really found anything Fisher has done in the Majors impressive but he does have a lot of believers that he will turn it around here.

I think you'd have to pay 3 to 5 mil for Grichuk to move him. The market for this type of player has really softened. If we're not completely up against it money wise why would you move Grichuk though? Grichuk at 5 mil is perfectly fine and if you have to eat 5 that's what you're paying. It's a sunk cost. We know we're going to have injuries. We have a rock star piece on the bench. Our lineup is truly outstanding. We just need one more starter!

I was just responding to the person who said we might regret trading Fisher before Grichuk. There's no point in trading Grichuk if we're eating close to half his salary. He's still a good player defensively who can get hot offensively. It's a luxury to have him at the bottom of our order now. Something I don't think we've ever had.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Author Posted February 16, 2021 Grichuk is a good 4th OF for this team. He's expensive for that role but it will be nice to have a good bench player for once. Plus, if we traded him we'd have to eat some of his contract and then turn around and sign another 4th OF to be our backup CF. By the time we do all that we'll be creeping up on 10M spent anyway.

Yes, good teams have good bench players, we're a good team, I've been pounding this drum for a long while now.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Agreed that Grichuk as a 4th outfielder is his best role. If they could get out of his contract in a trade then obviously do it and don’t look back, but that’s not happening in this market, so might as well use him in the most logical role for him.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 It will be very surprising if Grichuk does his regular thing and gets less than 500 at-bats. If literally anyone but Jansen gets a day off, he'll be in the lineup.

If Grichuk puts up the offensive numbers he had last season in RF, we're looking at ~2-3 WAR production, which we should all be happy with.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 If Grishuk is the biggest problem the Jays have on offense - and judging by the non-stop whining about his contract on here, he is - then the Jays don't really have a problem on offense. Neither Grishuk's production nor his contract for that production have been that bad. Not in the past and not the projections. Whether he is a starter or a bench player who still likely has over 500 PA this year. Imagine the amount of weeping and gnashing of teeth there would be over bad contracts if this was an Angels fan board.

That means Tellez is on the bench and Tellez is projected to be a better hitter than Grichuk. Tellez is probably also a better fielding 1B than Vlad in 2021. Vlad DH, Tellez 1B, Teoscar RF, Grichuk bench vs Vlad 1B, Teoscar DH, Grichuk RF, Tellez bench Second option has better defense in RF but worse at 1B and worse offense. Against LHP option #2 might be better though.

I had forgotten about Tellez, but that makes sense if you buy into his adjustments in a small sample/ Teoscar has literally been worth -24 DRS and -16 OAA since 2018 though, so I hope they get creative to try and limit his time fielding. We're talking worse than Domingo Santana and Nomar Mazara levels of bad in that span.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2021 Posted February 16, 2021 Is it me or do the Jays-Astros-Brewers-Mariners-A’s cycle through a lot of the same fringe players?

He can run a bit and has a nice arm. I say keep him out there and use the DH to squeeze another bat into the lineup.
