Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I know but it makes no sense to put Biggio at 3B who is very below average there. Might as well use Vladdy. He’s barely played third base. He has only had a handful of apperances at the position. No reason to think he can’t improve with full spring focusing on the position. He will play mostly third with the current lineup construction and likely play multiple positions to give days off to other guys.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I like Semien, but this team's biggest need going into the offseason was pitching! We now have Grichuk and his 10 mil salary on the bench. We need to ideally move grichuk and sign a starter or two. We've been through this. Stop repeating this. 4th OFers typically get 500 at bats a year. It's perfectly fine for him to be earning $10M. If the FO needs to shed $10M to sign someone else (based on the Ownership cap), then I'm sure you'll see them do something to clear it. Otherwise, assume he isn't preventing us from making additional moves to help the team as he clearly isn't pushing us up against the luxury cap.

Norman Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 This signing does not make since to me. One year for 18 million. Biggio is a much better player. His numbers prove it. No room for him in the outfield. Do the blue jays not have faith in him or something. This is a bad move by the jays. Did not need this guy. Need at least two starting pitching. Money could have been spent on them not other player. BAD MOVE.
EZe Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 This aligns nicely with the available stud SS group next year too.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Grichuk is a 4th OF on a contending team, which is exactly what the Jays are. It's f***ing awesome how Shatkins have simultaneously built a contender and a top farm system at the same time. Yup. This org has one of the best and deepest pools of talent in the league. They're set up to win consistently like NYY or LAD, and not in a short window.

Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 - 3rd in AL MVP voting in 2019 - massive defensive improvements over the past 3 years - reportedly due to his awesome work ethic. - can likely play 2nd, SS and 3rd - and provides the ever valuable second SS to protect in the case of injury (no good team starts Espinal at SS) - floor is a 2.5-3 WAR player - ceiling is a 6-7 WAR player - wasn't qualified and thus we don't give up a draft pick - can be qualified by the Jays if he dominates this year Is there anything not to like about this deal? Best I can come up with is he doesn't bat left handed or pitch. Well done by the FO and I'm very happy if they decided to toss him a few extra million if it was necessary to get this deal done. It's a great fit. Yup
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Curious to see how the lineup shakes out with this addition
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I love the term, I like the player, and I am undecided on the dollar amount until we see what they spend on pitching.

It's about time the Jays started swinging their dicks around by having 10 million dollar bench players.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Is it time to upgrade our Manager now? or do we think Charlie will make the 2nd year jump?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Is it time to upgrade our Manager now? or do we think Charlie will make the 2nd year jump? He still sucks. But with better players and less of a s***** bench. It will be harder for him to f*** things up.
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 This aligns nicely with the available stud SS group next year. Semien 1/18 Roark 1/12 Ray 1/8 Yates 1/5.5 Yamaguchi 1/3 Chatwood 1/3 Dolis 1/1.5 We're gonna be good this year. Still have a really strong farm system. And still a lot of flexibility moving forward
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Author Posted January 26, 2021 I love the term, I like the player, and I am undecided on the dollar amount until we see what they spend on pitching. What difference does it make on a 1 year deal? If it actually somehow did matter, we could just backload year 2 or 3 on whatever SP we sign by a couple of mil to make it all fit. If said pitcher comes on a 1 year deal and we are that squeezed for cash (all indications seem to be that we aren't), just forego signing anymore 3 million dollar flyers for the bullpen.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Grichuk is a 4th OF on a contending team, which is exactly what the Jays are. It's f***ing awesome how Shatkins have simultaneously built a contender and a top farm system. As of right now, Grichuk and Tellez platoon. This provides us awesome flexibility and injury insurance all while being league average in salary. Now let's add an arm or two and get ready for a great season ahead!
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Depth wins in the MLB. Best 1 year signing they could have made. They are starting to remove legit assets from the 40, so I think this is it for Free Agents. It does put them in an interesting position for a trade (either before the season or a deadline deal) for a legit 3B. I'd like to see them playing all the IF in multiple positions by who is pitching and who is hitting but I think that might blow the fanbase up.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Author Posted January 26, 2021 Is it time to upgrade our Manager now? or do we think Charlie will make the 2nd year jump? Yep. It's time to bring Gibby back.
John Balkabella Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 That black hole that was the bottom third of last year’s lineup has gone pfft!
Ray Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Marcus Semien puts the Jays 3rd in projected WAR according to Fangraphs. Atkins really out here building a super team. Get a couple pitchers and call it an offseason.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 1 year deal, deadly, now get a starter and we in business
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 lol this is f***ing awesome. Add Springer, added Semien at a bargain with no long term risk and we still have our awesome prospect base still in tact? What Jays fan could possibly be disappointed at this point?
Funky Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Shi Davidi is on Tim and Sid right now. Payroll is around $128 m with the signing. Still room to add a decent starter.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Shatkins haters will deny they were haters now Org is setup to win the next few years.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Is there any metrics that would show what the difference would be for the Jays with the improved defence with Semien and Springer? Also, would this improved defence help in attracting any FA SP who is sitting on the fence for which team to sign with the money being equal? Would there now be an enhanced possibility of a Biggio ++ trade to Chicago for Bryant and Hendricks since now we have replacement now for Biggio??
Ray Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 This lineup is just absurd lol: Biggio, 3B Bichette, SS, Springer, CF Hernandez, DH Guerrero, 1B Semien, 2B Gurriel Jr, LF Grichuk, RF Jansen, C Bench: Espinal, Fisher, Tellez, McGuire/Kirk
