Yeah I was always against signing him when he wanted multi-year deal. Way too volatile. Upside is undeniable though so to get him short term is good

Infielder Marcus Semien is in agreement with the Toronto Blue Jays on a one-year, $18 million contract, a source familiar with the deal tells ESPN.

Who cares if he's volatile as long as we're not paying for his ceiling. It's not like his floor sucks.

Instead of considering him volatile, another way to think of him is that he has a solid floor with tremendous upside. Top 3 in MVP voting in 2019.

Seems like a weird fit. Swing and miss guy. Average at best defender at SS but may play better at 3B. Hope they don’t push Bo off short fir him.

One year hold fir Groshams or Martin

Gotta say, I’m not chubbing over this. Kinda feels like it takes us out of the running for signing Bauer/Paxton/Turner etc. This feels like a musical chairs signing, rather than filling a specific need. Hope I’m wrong and he somehow puts up another 7.6 WAR season.

Great signing. Probably won't displace Biggio/Bichette. Contract will be well worth it if he comes in and contributes 2-3 wins while playing every day at 3B.

So what happens here? With the IF

1B/DH: Vladdy/Tellez

2B: Biggio

SS: Bichette

3B: Semien

Its a one year deal so I’m cool with it. But would have preferred if they allocated this money towards Bauer. This is probably the money they were going to sign Brantley with and offered to Tanaka but he’s going back to Japan. Team still needs atleast one more starter at the very least.

Well, if he signed say 4/64 that could definitely be a relatively prohibitive contract to a normal team if he was unproductive.. but that’s not a worry on 1 year deal. I’m for it

Important, re: Marcus Semien:

"A slow start had an oversized effect on the overall numbers. After 14 games, Semien had a 24 wRC+ and -0.2 WAR. Over his next 46 games, he put up a 133 wRC+ and 2.0 WAR — nearly identical to his great 2019 performance."

In this same piece, it's noted that the free agent with the most fWAR over the last three seasons is not Realmuto, not LeMahieu, not Bauer, and not Springer, but Marcus Semien. LOL!

Semien is playing 2B and Biggio is playing 3B.

Swing and miss guy? He had a 13% K rate in 2019.

I don't care what position he plays. 3B is a black hole and this is a terrific way to address it and offers a pretty decent floor with a high ceiling.

Baerga mentioned 2B in his IG post, and Rosenthal just mentioned it as well. Looks like Semien at 2B and Biggio as the regular 3B (but I'm sure he'll be playing everywhere).

On a one year deal, this is a really nice move. He may not come close to 2019 again, but since it's only a year, there's very little risk involved. He should still be good for a 2-3 WAR I would think, but with potential for lot better.

I've seen several tweets saying he will play 2B. One can assume he'll get some games at SS as well whenever Bo isn't playing.

With Buntoyo at the helm that will probably happen often.
