Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Gotta say, I’m not chubbing over this. Kinda feels like it takes us out of the running for signing Bauer/Paxton/Turner etc. This feels like a musical chairs signing, rather than filling a specific need. Hope I’m wrong and he somehow puts up another 7.6 WAR season. We will still sign a starting pitcher. Pretty sure it would have taken 2 years to get Turner to leave the Dodgers for us and at his age... no thanks. Rather roll the dice with Semien and hope he can repeat his 2019 performance.
philly30 Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Never really been a big believer in Semien, kinda hoping it’s no more than 2 years. His stats don't look that impressive, Jays need more pitching
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I'm happy with this. It takes us out of the Bryant/Hendricks trade ideas floating around though. So much upside in this move.
Mikeleelop Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Swing and miss guy? He had a 13% K rate in 2019. Career is over 20% Hope he keeps it under 20%
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 His stats don't look that impressive, Jays need more pitching They just got a projected 3+ WAR infielder for under 20M/yr. This is a great signing.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Semien projected for 3+ WAR. Fantastic signing. Vlad will still get his 3B opportunities.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Semien at 1 year & 18M >>>> Brantley 2 years for 32M. Especially with our roster. Disagree. Lineup needed a good left-handed hitter. Sure if we get 2019 Semien that would be awesome.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Semien is playing 2B and Biggio is playing 3B. No chance Biggio is playing 3B. Semien is a SS so he better be able to play 3B.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I joked elsewhere (twitter?) that the reason for the Springers presser for tomorrow is to allow them to have Bauer there .....looks like my basis is there but got the player wrong!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Career is over 20% Hope he keeps it under 20% 20.2% for his career and trending down. In all probability, a good deal south of 20% in 2021.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Disagree. Lineup needed a good left-handed hitter. Sure if we get 2019 Semien that would be awesome. Even if we get his 2018 and 2020 versions that's still a 3 WAR player lol.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 No chance Biggio is playing 3B. Semien is a SS so he better be able to play 3B. Its literally in the report that his primary postion will be 2B lol.
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Career is over 20% Hope he keeps it under 20% You realize that league average K% is 23% now right? And he also has an above average swinging strike %. Semien is not a swing and miss guy lol.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Limited risk with just one year, not much to dislike about this deal.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Lol, the Jays are paying for the standard, above average Semien. There's a non insignificant chance the Jays could be getting MVP calibre Semien. Shame on anyone not excited about this.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 If he has a good year we can offer arb too. Just another little area that could add value
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Its literally in the report that his primary postion will be 2B lol. I know but it makes no sense to put Biggio at 3B who is very below average there. Might as well use Vladdy.
Rafters Verified Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Adding Springer and Semien up the middle should help out the defence... and both guys hitting in AL east parks could be fun to watch... and wonder it there is a sell high on Biggio trade coming
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Where are the Atkins haters now bitches?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I'm happy with this. It takes us out of the Bryant/Hendricks trade ideas floating around though. So much upside in this move. No reason it has to take us out of Hendricks if we are actually interested in him. And if it takes us out on Bryant, who cares? If the Cubs thought he was worthless due to his arb bonus they would have non-tendered him. I'd rather pay the money in FA for a rental than also having to send assets to do so.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Beta Atkins taking a page out of the Alpha Anthopolous one year deal playbook. His power will probably play up outside of Oakland, great signing. Was going to say that this reminds me of Donaldson going to the Braves
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 If he has a good year we can offer arb too. Just another little area that could add value That's exactly what I wanted to ask. If he plays amazing, can offer him arb and get a pick out of him in the worst case scenario?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 - 3rd in AL MVP voting in 2019 - massive defensive improvements over the past 3 years - reportedly due to his awesome work ethic. - can likely play 2nd, SS and 3rd - and provides the ever valuable second SS to protect in the case of injury (no good team starts Espinal at SS) - floor is a 2.5-3 WAR player - ceiling is a 6-7 WAR player - wasn't qualified and thus we don't give up a draft pick - can be qualified by the Jays if he dominates this year Is there anything not to like about this deal? Best I can come up with is he doesn't bat left handed or pitch. Well done by the FO and I'm very happy if they decided to toss him a few extra million if it was necessary to get this deal done. It's a great fit.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I like Semien, but this team's biggest need going into the offseason was pitching! We now have Grichuk and his 10 mil salary on the bench. We need to ideally move grichuk and sign a starter or two.
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Gonna start banning people who don't love this signing or are immediately saying the Jays needed pitching instead

Short of signing Bauer, Semien in the infield is almost certainly a significant upgrade than anywhere the Jays will find for their rotation in the FA market.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I know but it makes no sense to put Biggio at 3B who is very below average there. Might as well use Vladdy. You repeat this view about twice a day. Perhaps let's leave that up to the perfectly qualified organization to figure out? No need for you to worry about it right now.

It's f***ing awesome how Shatkins have simultaneously built a contender and a top farm system.
