Marcus Semien to the Jays

Gotta say, I’m not chubbing over this. Kinda feels like it takes us out of the running for signing Bauer/Paxton/Turner etc. This feels like a musical chairs signing, rather than filling a specific need. Hope I’m wrong and he somehow puts up another 7.6 WAR season.

 

We will still sign a starting pitcher. Pretty sure it would have taken 2 years to get Turner to leave the Dodgers for us and at his age... no thanks. Rather roll the dice with Semien and hope he can repeat his 2019 performance.

No reason it has to take us out of Hendricks if we are actually interested in him. And if it takes us out on Bryant, who cares? If the Cubs thought he was worthless due to his arb bonus they would have non-tendered him. I'd rather pay the money in FA for a rental than also having to send assets to do so.

- massive defensive improvements over the past 3 years - reportedly due to his awesome work ethic.

- can likely play 2nd, SS and 3rd - and provides the ever valuable second SS to protect in the case of injury (no good team starts Espinal at SS)

- floor is a 2.5-3 WAR player

- ceiling is a 6-7 WAR player

- wasn't qualified and thus we don't give up a draft pick

- can be qualified by the Jays if he dominates this year

 

Is there anything not to like about this deal? Best I can come up with is he doesn't bat left handed or pitch. Well done by the FO and I'm very happy if they decided to toss him a few extra million if it was necessary to get this deal done. It's a great fit.

An upgrade is an upgrade. Short of signing Bauer, Semien in the infield is almost certainly a significant upgrade than anywhere the Jays will find for their rotation in the FA market.

Grichuk is a 4th OF on a contending team, which is exactly what the Jays are.

 

It's f***ing awesome how Shatkins have simultaneously built a contender and a top farm system.
