Welcome to the 2021 Rosterbation Discussion Thread.

We've never had a regular thread like this in the past so I don't know how it will translate but I feel like it could potentially be a new staple of the forum.

The Rosterbation thread is where you get to play GM and Manager and build your ideal line-ups and rosters, and where you also complain about the manager's line-up decisions when the season begins.

To be clear, this isn't meant to mirror the Offseason Roster Thread, which is more informational and being used to discuss free agency and the trade wire.

This is where you set the line-up and roster how you think it should be, and how it would be set if you were the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays.

I'll start things off with my line-up for 2021. This is obviously contingent on them not trading any of these guys away and not bringing in anybody better. I feel like I'll tinker with this a lot but it's currently where my head is at in the moment just based on the last couple of years and Steamer projections for 2021.

1 - 2B - Cavan Biggio

2 - CF - George Springer

3 - SS - Bo Bichette

4 - LF - Lourdes Gurriel Jr

5 - 3B - Vladimir Guerrero Jr

6 - RF - Teoscar Hernandez

7 - DH - Alejandro Kirk

8 - 1B - Rowdy Tellez

9 - CA - Danny Jansen

I've made a trade with the Cubs, signed Paxton and end up with this:

1 - CF - George Springer

2 - SS - Bo Bichette

3 - 3B - Kris Bryant

4 - LF - Lourdes Gurriel Jr

5 - 1B - Vladimir Guerrero Jr (hoping he's my #4 some year...)

6 - RF - Teoscar Hernandez

7 - 2B - Cavan Biggio

8 - DH - Alejandro Kirk/Rowdy Tellez

9 - CA - Danny Jansen

I'd consider moving Jansen to 8 and hit Biggio 9th

Bench: Grichuk, either Kirk or Tellez any given night, Espinal or Urena?, one more OF if the roster is 26

SP

1 - Ryu

2 - Kyle Hendricks

3 - Pearson

4 - James Paxton

5 - Robbie Ray

BP: Chatwood, Stripling, Roark, Cole, Dolis, Romano, Yates and one more (whoever impresses in spring training)

To start the year I think the lineup is more likely to be something like:

Springer

Bichette

Gurriel Jr

Hernandez

Guerrero Jr

Biggio

Tellez

Grichuk

Jansen

They probably get another infielder though. I think Springer definitely leads off.

Travis Shaw was batting third deep into last season. The front office isn't going to send Charlie a lineup with Bichette hitting third.

Montoyo is going to butcher our lineup giving us all ulcers. I have zero faith in him.

Well then participate in the thread properly and fire the guy

If I'm the GM and assume a modest amount of money is left then my last big strike is going to be for a starting pitcher. Masahiro Tanaka at his 1/15 asking price is very appealing, but there are others like Paxton and Odorizzi.

I like the bullpen with the recent additions and wouldn't spend on a guy like Hand if it prevented upgrades in other areas. Darren O'Day stands out as a ground ball specialist that could fill the Anthony Bass role for cheap, but there are many options. He's just an example.

Regarding third base, I'd be tempted to trade for a guy like Eugenio Suarez, but tying ourselves into a long term deal for a mediocre defender doesn't really align with the goals of the FO. Instead, I'd look to add a player on a 1 year deal and reevaluate during next year's FA class. That could be Semien, Gregorius, Turner, Simmons, Hernandez, etc. It's a game of musical chairs and someone will settle for a 1 year deal. I'm not against Bryant either if the money is there and it doesn't take a top 5 prospect.

Springer

You just took our payroll over 185 mil. You add in pension and benefits and minor salaries and we are right up against the luxury tax. I definitely like it, but I'm not sure Rogers would..lol.

Yeah the quick math in head said roughly $180,000,000.

I doubt it happens. Maybe $170,000,000 if they couldn't sign Bauer but signed Paxton instead. I don't think they'll bring in 2 more high quality starters though. If they were to trade for Hendricks I doubt they sign another top end free agent starter.

Who knows what the payroll parameters are that Shatkins has to work with. Probably not more than $150M, and they will want to leave some $10M at least for in season additions.

Still looks awesome. Fool proof lineup

Team still needs a rotation. The "hit them to death" strategy has been proven to not be very effective time and time again due to the streaky nature of hitting.

Interested to see how Shatkins address it. Tons of options still on the table.

Question: If the Jays do acquire another bat for whatever reason (ie: Semien, Bryant, whoever else) and you get to move Vlad to 1st, do you run Kirk as your primary catcher to get both him and Tellez in the every day lineup? Or do you share playing time between Kirk and Tellez and still run Jansen as your starting catcher?

Kirk and Tellez were two of the better bats on last year's team and both project among the top 5 on the team for 2021 as well.

I would expect Tellez to be the primary DH in this scenario, with Jansen and Kirk sharing catching duties. To be frank, right now Jansen is the better option at catcher, even if Kirk has the better bat.

Not having either Springer or Biggio in the leadoff spot is criminal. Bichette needs to be 2 or 3 spot.

So if I'm building a lineup, I'm trying to get Kirk in the batting order every day. Projection systems love him and I want to see him get as much playing time as possible to prove what he can do over a legitimate sample size.

It just comes down to whether I want Kirk as the primary starting catcher and DH'ing in his off days (when Jansen fills in at catcher) or if I want him as the primary DH and catching on Jansen's off days (where Tellez then fills in at DH).

I think at the end of the day, in this scenario all three of Jansen, Kirk, Tellez accrue around 500 PAs. There will be games with all three in the lineup, assuming Jays carry a 3rd catcher for part of the season. Of course, if Kirk is OPS'ing .900+ and Tellez barely .800, Jays will get Kirk in there more often.

Not a chance Semien is hitting 9th. He probably slots in 5th or 6th.
