TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 To be clear, I'm advocating for bench players on minor league deals, which wouldn't take a roster spot. Eventually they have to take a 40 man spot to get to the bench though. Not saying we shouldn't have these options but at this point we will not be the optimal destination for these vets
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) Id be interested in guys like Jed Lowrie, Assdribble, or even bringing Panik back. I think if they upgrade the bench it needs to be a left handed hitter who can play second and third. The "professional hitter" (Panik) might be coming back. He started off slow but really picked it up afterwards. Not a bad bench option. Edited January 28, 2021 by Jays24

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Panik? He’d be third on that list but could do worse Ya its just a guess since there is familiarity with him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Flipping through the MLB news today and it hit me all over again OMFG we're going to have George Springer and Marcus Semien batting early in the order this year!!! I'm F'n excited. Sometimes I almost can't beleive we actually got Springer.

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Imagine if: Everyone stays healthy, Kirk takes over C, Vladdy breaks out, Tellez doesn't regress much, and Hernandez doesn't regress much... Springer .360 wOBA Bo .360 wOBA Teoscar .350 wOBA Vlad .360 wOBA Tellez .350 wOBA Gurriel .350 wOBA Semien .330 wOBA Kirk .330 wOBA Biggio .335 wOBA Look at that 7-8-9, lmao
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Need another starter to chew up innings. Odorizzi would be my preference. He should be cheap enough that he wouldn’t hault another addition at the deadline or next offseason. I don’t have faith in any starter beyond Ryu and betting on him making 25 starts seems like a bad idea.

Everyone has almost the same wOBA! Jk And damn, even Charlie can't mess up that lineup. It kinda doesn't matter how you order them if they all hit like that.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 If the Jays were to sign Paxton, we'd have 4 lefties in the rotation. (L) Ryu (L) Paxton ® Pearson (L) Ray (L) Matz On a different subject, does anyone think they'll run a 6 man rotation this season to spread the innings around, considering nobody pitched a starters work load in 2020? (L) Ryu ® Pearson (L) Ray ® Stripling (L) Matz ® Roark

Ryu Free agent or trade Pearson Ray/Striping Matz/Roark

I've been back and forth on which of the 3 likely options we should sign, and the more I think of it, the more I consider it kinda a wash between Odorizzi/Paxton/Walker. Walker is clearly the weakest one of the group, but not by a huge margin, and I'm VERY intrigued by his eagerness to take advantage of the Jays resources to improve himself... I'd be okay with any of the 3 though.

Should also note, this was already a team that was Top 5 in the AL in almost every offensive metric last season, to which we've added Springer and Semien and hopefully the younger guys taking a big step. League average pitching alone probably wins you 88-90 games with our projected offense.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 OK we should now officially call it Springer Training for this year Who's with me? Loll oops
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Than you go with the guy with the lowest health risk, perceived anyway. Which would be Odorizzi? Walker was healthier last season than either Odorizzi/Paxton, but super fragile the seasons before that. Tough to say who is the more durable one going forward, but I mean, the team will have a lot more access to medicals etc than we do, so they'll make a more informed decision than I can Odorizzi is probably my brain's choice, but I really do find Walker intriguing for reasons that aren't necessarily all that brain-thinkie.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 My guess is they will end up taking whoever bites on a one year deal. Odorizzi probably wants multi years. Paxton will likely take one year, but would he take a pillow contract in the AL East pitching home games in Dunedin? Walker might be the most realistic in that case.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Than you go with the guy with the lowest health risk, perceived anyway. Which would be Odorizzi? Odorizzi may also have the highest upside. For me, he's the clear choice. Odorizzi > Paxton >> Walker

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Funny thing is Semien probably doesn't bat early in the order...that's how deep we are. I think he bats in the middle of the order, which seems higher than most people here think. It is a tough one because we have no clue how good Vladdy will be and how real Teo and Tellez are. If everyone is as good as we think they will be, I go with the below. Tellez was so damn good in the 3 hole before he got hurt so I really have no clue. 2 of our top 3 batters from last year can be at the bottom 3 lol. Springer Bo Vlad Semien Teo Gurriel Tellez Jansen Biggio
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 Than you go with the guy with the lowest health risk, perceived anyway. Which would be Odorizzi? That’s my reasoning behind Odorizzi, they are going to need the innings. Ryu is far from a lock to stay healthy and will require some maintenance days where his start gets pushed back a day or two. They backed off him pretty hard at the end of the year last year. Rick Porcello is another guy who fits the bill when it comes to providing innings.

Paxton will likely take one year, but would he take a pillow contract in the AL East pitching home games in Dunedin? Walker might be the most realistic in that case. I agree with all of this. I would rather overpay Paxton for one year than sign Walker.

(L) Ryu ® Pearson (L) Ray ® Stripling (L) Matz ® Roark Interesting idea, I hadn’t thought of this. My guess is no and that we will just see them use piggy backs or opener/long guy to manage everyone’s workload.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I'm actually a bit excited to see what Ray and Matz can do this year Hoping spring training at the Dunedin faculty with Pete Walker is fruitful

Springer Biggio Vladdy Bichette Gurriel Jr. Teoscar Semien Grichuk/Tellez Jansen/Kirk I see Springer and Bo being our 1/2. You can't move Springer out of his spot that's been so good to him unless he says so. Such a crazy deep lineup regardless.
