Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 If the Jays offered 4 years $78M, then that's $4.5M more per season to come to Toronto - that's 30% more per season. The guy went from a 90 wRC+ hitter in 2017 and 2018 to one of the best in baseball the past 2 years. His setup is near perfect in NY and I'm certainly not surprised he wanted to stay put. If he wanted to make as much money as he could, then he'd probably be signing in Toronto and betting on himself to age gracefully.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 I'm fine losing out on DJL. Springer is the guy we should be going for. They may be thinking one of Martin or Groshans will be up by end of season to play 3B.

The Jays will need to beat other preferential teams by at least $5 million per year after taxes IMO. $4.5 million is only $2. something after taxes That amount of money and relative to the amount guys have made over their careers and will be making in the new contract, not enough to move the needle.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Maybe DJL offered the Yanks a Buy 5 get one free deal
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Runner up for like 6th time this offseason
Laika Community Moderator Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 The years are kind of irrelevant on some of these guys. You assume they will be dead money before the end of the deal. Kind of misleading to even look at the AAV. $90M is more than people thought DJL would get at the outset of the offseason so even if Toronto only offered $78M I'm happy that someone bid the Yankees up.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 I don't think DJ was leaving the Yankees for any team, not just the Jays. He wanted to stay, the Yankees wanted him back, it was just a matter of time before they agreed. I don't think it mattered what the Jays offered, unless it was ridiculous (like 6/120 or something like that). This deal probably gives the Yanks enough lux tax flexibility to sign a SP (Kluber?).
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 DJL never made a lot of sense. The team is flush with infielders from the top down and there is already talk of some of these guys having to move off the dirt to the outfield. Springer and Bauer are the two that make sense. Hard no on Realmuto.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Sucks to come 2nd place again but Springer is the real prize for me. If we don't get him then all hell will break loose.

Ehjays Verified Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 It’ll be a six-year, $90MM contract for LeMahieu when finalized, as was first reported by Pat Ragazzo (Twitter link). The $90MM overall guarantee isn’t particularly surprising, but it is indeed an eye-opener to see that sum come over a six-year term rather than five or even four years. That LeMahieu agreed to a lengthier pact is a boost for the Yankees, as the associated $15MM luxury hit will “only” put the team at about $195MM in terms of 2021 luxury-tax obligations. That leaves the club with as much as $14-15MM of space before reaching the $210MM luxury barrier.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Part of me wants to see what would happen if the Jays signed Taijuan Walker and Mark Melancon and called it an offseason
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Part of me wants to see what would happen if the Jays signed Taijuan Walker and Mark Melancon and called it an offseason That's because you're sick and twisted and have no interest in seeing the Jays get better lol
Ray Verified Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 This management team won't go the extra year to sign a guy. The Yankees and dodgers get discounts because players want to go there. It all adds up to us not getting squat on the free agent market. It's time to look to the trade market. Go get Bryant. They literally went the extra year to get Ryu last year. There's probably just very few guys they think are worth the extra year. It's the first time they've had substantial payroll flexibility and it makes sense to add around a young team. Let's maybe give them until the end of the offseason before we start judging it.
Virgil_Hiltz Verified Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Looks like the Jays has the wild card spot for FA signings! Sometimes the only thing worse is actually signing over inflated contracts. Outfield defence and pitching is their requirements and not sure moving Biggio to the OF would be a solution either.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Part of me wants to see what would happen if the Jays signed Taijuan Walker and Mark Melancon and called it an offseason Toronto fans support the Leafs and mediocrity every year. The wait till next year cry will be heard and not a tear shed.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Tommy La Stella may also be a real possibility. Something is better than nothing

Can't compare hockey in Toronto with baseball in Toronto. That's like comparing hockey in Florida with being stupid in Florida. One, the overwhelming majority of people are extremely passionate about....the other has a much smaller following.
RobinThicc Verified Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 I think I wouldve done 5/90. But looks like it wouldve had to be more for him to come here.

The Tampa Bay Lighting sell out and have a huge following.. The Tampa Bay Rays not so much. I get what you are saying though.

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Toronto literally has a major sports championship from less than two years ago. Right, but nothing to do with fans saying wait until next year's FAs with the Jays if nothing of significance happens this off season. Nothing to do either with the Leafs being sold out nightly even when s*****...

This team can't compete with the padres/dodgers etc..But if they want to make a serious run in 1-2 years, they can't do it all in 1 offseason.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Go all in for Bauer Bauer or Springer. It's come down to those 2. Realmuto's great but I think we'll go forward with our current catching situation.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 So you agree you made a senseless post with no connection between the two. Thanks. The Raptors have nothing to do with anything. L54 stated he is curious what repercussions would be of nothing happening of significant this off season. I stated the fans/FO spin will be wait until next year's larger FA crop and nothing will happen. I used an example of fans still supporting the Leafs regardless. Raptors winning a Championship is moot to my point and the topic.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2021 Posted January 15, 2021 Maybe you shouldn't listen to rumors. Who were the f***ing idiots that said that they were going to make a big splash this off season with all this money available to throw around? If Shatkins don't sign at least one of Springer, Bauer or Realmuto plus at least one other second tier free agent, then the off season is a bust only based on those two f***ing idiots shooting their mouths off. We could have easily traded for Lindor and Carrasco based on what the Mets gave up and then worried about extending Lindor afterwards. Shatkins is full of s***.

Still can easily make this offseason a huge success by doing exactly what you said. I'll just shine my pitchfork in the meantime lol.
