Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 That's not how park factors work. Franco spent the majority of his career in a hitter's haven in CBP and was above average offensively twice, putting up a >.200 ISO once in his rookie year. He's also a bad defender at best, he absolutely will hurt you on D. He did fine for KC, players evolve/develop.. It ended up as a decent investment for Kansas City, with which Franco slashed .278/.321/.457 (106 wRC+) and totaled eight home runs in 243 plate appearances. He also chipped in playable work at third base with zero Defensive Runs Saved and a plus-1.3 Ultimate Zone Rating in 51 games. KC just can't afford it for that... What I am saying is it would not cost a player or a hell of a lot of $$$... It would be a decent stop gap until Martin or Groshans arrives and we can shuffle guys around. Offer him a 1 yr with an options or something..

Jays have other players they would rather give those reps to.

Offer him a 1 yr with an options or something.. You can't get much out of 51 games of defensive data. His DRS over the past 4 seasons are -2, -14, -2 and -10. His UZR ranges from average to bad. His OAA was -2 this season fwiw (11th percentile), -8 the year before (4th percentile) and -4 the year prior (13th percentile). So he's maybe an average hitter with bad defense and whose baserunning has typically also been quite bad. He and Travis Shaw project to be about as valuable, do you want Travis Shaw as a stop gap for the players you mentioned? I also think you're vastly underestimating how close Groshans and Martin are to the majors. Maikel Franco is barely an average player, we can aim much higher while not breaking the bank.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Jays rumoured to be in on Jean Segura. I like this if we can deal something like Roark and a prospect, but I think his contract has negative value.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Maikal Franco for 3B?? Royals are expected to non tender.... He would be a nice fit.. for solo $$ Franco sucks. What the hell is wrong with you people? Career wRC+ of 91.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Is there a world in which we'd sign Wong and trade for Segura? Wong needs to be platooned and it's not like we have any 'lefty mashers' on the roster who play 2nd/3rd. With Segura able to play 2nd/SS/3rd and Biggio able to play 2nd/3rd/OF are there enough at bats to go around when you factor in injuries and the DH spot? Segura is a nice get as he's provide more depth at SS in the event of an injury to Bo. Our infield defense would be great and we'd be adding a couple of bats that make contact and don't strike out much.

Rafters Verified Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Segura did play 24 games at 3B last season, adds some extra flexibility on the infield.

As would I, but these are likely contingency plans if they strike out in FA, you can't make these guys come here. I'm sure all the top guys are on their radar. Same goes for JBJ, Brantley, etc...
Ray Verified Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Wondering if they will end up non-tendering Travis Shaw.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Wondering if they will end up non-tendering Travis Shaw. I have to think so at this point.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 15 mil a year for Segura to provide depth...If we sign Wong and trade for Segura I will lose all faith. I get it and it's highly unlikely we'd get them both - but there must be at least 800 PA's available between middle infield, 3rd and our 4th OFer. Right now we're giving those PA's to Jonathan Davis, Espinal or this years version of Joe Panik. I think we all agree it's unlikely we're getting Segura either way unless Philly is eating some of the contract or taking back a bad contract. Would you add both Wong and Segura if they were both about 2 years @ $7.5M AAV?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I have to think so at this point. I would be disappointed if they tender Shaw a contract.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I would be disappointed if they tender Shaw a contract. Shaw and Cole non-tendered. Now let's fill those roster spots with upgrades!
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Wondering if they will end up non-tendering Travis Shaw. Well..... The Jays are going to sign every free agent out there. There are only so many roster spots. Shaw is gone.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Shaw and Cole non-tendered. Now let's fill those roster spots with upgrades! Makes sense Theyre clearly trying to improve the infield Made no sense to keep Shaw
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 Shaw and Cole non-tendered. Now let's fill those roster spots with upgrades! We didn't keep Cole? Didn't we pull both Shoemaker and Ray early so we could use him in the 7th inning? I'm shocked lol.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 3, 2020 Author Posted December 3, 2020 I'm pleased with the Cole non-tender. He would have been cheap, but he isn't good and is out of options.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I'm pleasantly surprised by the Cole non tender as well. He didn't seem all that good last season despite the ERA, and cheap RP's are going to be plentiful in free agency so the more open bullpen spots (and the less spots occupied by replaceable parts), the better.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2020 Posted December 3, 2020 I'd be happy to see Cole back on another minor league deal.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Now we're in on Ozuna I'm reading Seems a little doubtful
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 4, 2020 Author Posted December 4, 2020 Now we're in on Ozuna I'm reading Seems a little doubtful Morosi Ozuna doesn't seem like a fit here at all.

Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Not unless you flip Gurriel for something else. So damn curious how this team will look in a months time. One or two major free agent signings will tell us everything.
Key22 Verified Member Posted December 4, 2020 Posted December 4, 2020 Which teams are really "IN" on the big free agents - it seems the Mets are going after McCann for catcher which leaves JT Realmuto perhaps without the biggest spending team after him. Assuming the Jays can sign one of Springer or JTR which would you rather have - let's assume both get 5/$135m It's tough to find a true two-way catcher - a good defensive catcher who can hit. Then again it's tough to find a true two-way CF.

However, if Jansen is a big piece in a trade for another star then you could change my mind.

Springer clearly has the better bat and some might suggest he'll age more gracefully (making the move to RF at some point). Both are studs.

Nats maybe?

Yeah feels like he’s (JTR) trying to set the market for C rather than what the precedent has been for similar players last handful of years. 5/100 would seem entirely fair, rather than a “Covid discount”
