Pretty much, and he continues to get better, 18.9M is a nice fee to bet on himself. He's going to get paid next off-season barring injury.

He still is a #4 though on a good team, and wouldn't crack a dodgers rotation. Jays have so many backend pitchers and even Kay who could try to slot in too. If they hadn't signed Ray, it would make sense, but Roark/Stripling/Kay/Ray. I think we need to spend the money on a real #1. You remove Ray, and you have 22m/yr that would have gone to Gaus/Ray that could be used for a real difference maker.

Realmuto would be my number one target and trade Danny Jansen. Get two birds stoned at once.

JT/Bauer/DJL , but Jays are in on basically every free agent right now. I know they can't have 4-6 offers out there though lol

Lots of ways to make things work

You can sign a SP

Or

You can sign Realmuto or Springer and trade for a SP

Have to start by seeing who will sign here and for what $$

Every offer will have conditions and / or expiry

Today was the first day I got upset at us being interested in someone because it's making my expectations feel unrealistic. It's to the point where ill be pissed if we don't get some combination of Springer, Lindor and Paxson lol.

Lower it down to JBJ, La Stella, and Happ.. this way disappointment will be more unlikely

There are less than a handful of teams that are looking to spend real money this winter. For once, unrealistic optimism might be warranted. Doesn't mean they'll succeed in signing anyone big, but the great equalizer in free agency is money, and if the Jays are looking to spend it without much competition, then they have as good a chance as any.

The Mets are the team that everyone should be expecting at least 2 big names to go to, though.

7 of the top 20 SP in 2020 were FA signings. The most common way for a team to get a #1 is from within. It would be nice to sign Bauer, the only #1 out there, but it's not a necessity.

Our number 1 is Hyn-jin Ryu. A guy we signed..lol. We have money to spend. A rotation of Ryu and 4 question marks will have a harder time making the playoffs over 162 and we don't know if playoffs will be 5, 6 7 or 8 teams. I know you're fine with waiting 2 years until the kids are ready. I know you are convinced SWR will be an ace, but there is a chance he won't. You don't waste years. If you are good enough to compete go out and get some certainty.

No, I'm not convinced SWR will be an ace, where did you get that idea, he's more likely a mid-rotation guy.

2022 is when I expect the Jays will compete with the TBR, CWS, LAD of the world. If they somehow sign Bauer and Springer this offseason, that timeline becomes next season.

Then make the reports of us being in on all the top guys stop lol.

Toronto will never be in this position again. All the stars are aligned:

- Covid economics has taken many teams out of the running for significant free agents

- Toronto was relatively less harmed by Covid economics because Rogers wasn't hurt by it

- Covid economics will depress FA salaries

- Toronto's team is on the upswing and it makes sense to add

So FA salaries will be low, and Toronto is more competitive than ever for free agents, and it makes sense for them to sign some.

Shapiro and Atkins know this. It's a perfect storm of circumstances and it would be malpractice to just have a normal offseason.

I expect significant additions. Even if Bauer, Springer, Realmuto, Lindor don't work out I would expect the team to make sure they land some preferred second tier talent like Turner, Tanaka, Paxton, Semien. They were aggressive last offseason and ended up with Ryu - even if they just follow that pattern we should see some responsible higher-end purchases but they might be even more aggressive for the above reasons.

I don't think I've ever seen a projected 3.1 fWAR SP be referred to a #4 before. Interesting... :confused::P

You’re such a wanker. The last couple years you could’ve nabbed Gausman on the waiver wire in 20 team dynasty leagues. His career has been disappointing to this point. He’s solid but not a 1 or 2 for sure. He could be a 3 but xpos said on a good team he’s prob 4, what’s the problem?

In the last few hours you've accused me of racism and called Spanky a wanker. Not allowed, mate.

Both of these things are allowed.

Jim, stop being a wanker

Those are Hurl's words, mate. The rules of engagement. If they don't apply, let me know so I can let connorp know what I really think of him.

Neither instance meets the definition of an attack. Grow a skeleton.

1. Some light ribbing is fine and can be fun. This message board has a long history of free speech and open criticism. It may be okay to call someone an idiot because their post about baseball is just horrible, or all of their posts are horrible. This rule is not a license to freely post whatever stupid opinion about baseball you might have. If you come here to defend sac bunts, you will get dragged and the moderators won't help you. When things get too venomous or too personal, the line will have been crossed. The moderators will be on watch for specific posters continuing to go at each other in different threads. Ongoing feuds between specific posters can derail threads and distract from worthwhile conversation. The key consideration is the intent of the post; posts that the moderators, in their sole discretion, interpret as targeted at another poster with malicious intent or with intent to incite negative reactions will be punishable.

I had to check my URL, I thought I had mistakenly gone to the Manchester United Football page in the UK, with all this, wanker and Mate being thrown around. All very British of you. Tea time at 4, hip, hip.

PS: I love sac bunts!! Suck it Hurl! ;)

By the way, this is spot on. I said basically the same thing a week or so ago to Jim saying wait until the FA class of 2021.

This off season is different and 2021 will not be in our competitive favor like this year.
