max silver Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 It actually shows good judgement by the org. Non tendered h after a good season and got him back without committing a 26 man spot. Geniuses. Sneaky good move for sure. Just need to make sure Uncle Charlie doesn't use him as the first man up in high leverage in the playoffs again.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 I’m not a believer either but it’s just NY splashy and it’s only 1 year commitment And his 2021 salary will be right around what they owed Cano prior to the PED suspension. Makes a lot of sense for them. Would also increase the chances of the Jays getting Springer the more the Mets spend money elsewhere.

We pulled out 2 pitchers who were hot in the playoffs for a guy we nontendered. That line of thinking scares me lol.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 (edited) The Indians have cleared a lot of payroll. I know they aren't spenders, but they have 23 mil committed plus league min would bring them up another 13. They can spend more than 36. I wonder if we could dump Grichuk on them. Even if we ate 2 mil a season our payroll drops to 62 mil plus league min salaries. You add Springer and DJL for 46 mil. Hendriks for 10. Kluber or Paxton for 1 and 12. A Jake Mcgee or Kirby Yates type for 3 to 5 mil. That gets us to 123 plus league min salaries bringing us to 133 range giving us flexibility in season and next season with Paxton's 12, Tulo's 4 mil, Shun's 3 mil and Roark's 12 coming off the books we would have 29 dropping off next year. I mean you could add 12 and sign Kluber and Paxton. They are just one year gambles and we would be 145 Cavan Bo DJL Springer Gurriel Vlad Teoscar Tellez Jansen/Kirk Ryu Paxton Kluber Pearson Ray Hendriks Romano Dolis Yates Edited January 9, 2021 by saskjayfan
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 You can't have Paxton and Kluber in the rotation if you're only signing one of them. The entire argument doesn't make sense because the Cleveland Indians are not going to take on Grichuk's contract just because Toronto doesn't want it, even at a reduced rate. If they wanted to spend the money they could just go acquire a good player as a FA.
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Nothing wrong with that. Not at all. Cole pitched very well. Lots of surplus value there.

I realize that all these scenario's would never happen. I'm just bored and throwing out dream scenarios because there's nothing else to talk about. I think Grichuk makes a lot of sense for Cleveland. Their offense blows and so does their outfield. This still have great pitching and Ramirez. They need offense and specifically power. Grichuk's below average in centre, but at least average in the corner. He's a solid 2 to 2.5 win player and he derives his value from what Cleveland is sorely lacking. 3 and 24 or 3 and 21 might make sense for Cleveland.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 Not at all. Cole pitched very well. Lots of surplus value there. Cole pitched reasonably well. I wouldn't say there's lots of surplus value, but there's no harm bringing him in on a minor league deal. Bass has been a lot better than cole over the last 3 years. I wouldn't mind bringing Bass back. I can't imagine it will cost that much.

While that would make for a rotation with very high upside I can't help but go glass half empty and think about how badly that could turn out. If Ray is terrible again and both Kluber and Paxton get hurt and miss a good chunk of time (very likely scenario) you are left with a terrible starting rotation. I seriously doubt Cleveland wants anything to do with Grichuk, they are dramatically slashing payroll and likely wouldn't want to be adding a negative value contract to their books. Grichuk has potential to hit 2-2.5 wins in a good season, but he's much more likely in the 1-1.5 win range if we are being realistic. Edited January 9, 2021 by max silver
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2021 Posted January 9, 2021 I mean if Cleveland wanted to add power in the OF they could just sign Joc Pederson or Ozuna. What would Grichuk get on the open market? 2/10? Is he any better than Grossman?

What would Grichuk get on the open market? 2/10? Is he any better than Grossman? He's a tick better offensively, 2 years younger and a better defender. If Grossman's 2 and 10 Grichuk is probably 2 and 14. Signing guys isn't that easy. Just look at us. As much as no one wants to come to us, no one wants to go to cleveland either. Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2021 Posted January 11, 2021 It's the same off-season, I've changed the title for clarity. Technically it's the 2020 offseason, the 2021 offseason begins following the 2021 World Series, so the original title was fine. This thread was created following the Jays getting knocked out of the WC so it should remain as before.

This thread was created following the Jays getting knocked out of the WC so it should remain as before. Is it though? Wouldn't it logically make more sense if the 2020 campaign (season, pre-season, post-season, off-season) conclude with the end of the world series? I look at it as this off-season being pre-work to prepare for the 2021 pre-season. I know it's all semantics...

However thinking back about seeing Murphy as a reliever in his short MLB stint I did have questions about his fastball command being sufficient to turn over a lineup multiple times, perhaps the changeup didn't come along enough for him to have a viable third offering. Merryweather certainly has the stuff and arsenal to be a fantastic starter but how long would it take before the inevitable injuries pop up again with a starters workload?

If he's not in the bullpen, Murphy is with the AAA team as SP depth. He likely is in the bullpen from the start, and I'd rather he be pitching in MLB all season, as long man/spot starter from the bullpen. That would not preclude him from joining the rotation at some later point. Merryweather SP depth in AAA.

Laika Community Moderator Posted January 11, 2021 Posted January 11, 2021 It is more common to use the upcoming season year to label the offseason. Example, the current free agents are free agents for the 2021 season, so this should be considered the 2021 offseason.

Yeah I looked on fangraphs and this is how they delimit their free agent classes as well so I was mistaken before.
