The Hendriks trade was somewhat defensible at the time since the team essentially had a one year window (2016) and no SP depth at all at the time the trade was made. Plus as mentioned Gibbons didn't seem to like him or use him in big spots. Chavez looked like a solid back end starter in Oakland. Obviously in hindsight the Jays had no need for even a 6th-7th starter that year due to amazingly good health, and Chavez was trash in the pen.

Not a good trade, but it wasn't without some reasonable logic at the time. Just didn't work out. In some ways, it's better it didn't work out. I'd rather have had perfect SP health in 2016 like they ultimately had rather than needing Chavez to start 10-15 games.

They were desperate for starting pitching depth and I don't remember there being an outcry over that trade. FO obviously didn't believe in Hendriks for some reason despite the velo increase since he only pitched in garbage time in the regular season and playoffs.

I was pretty ticked off about that trade at the time it was made. Hendriks had his breakout in the bullpen and was immediately shipped off for a mediocre swingman. I certainly can't claim to have foreseen him becoming the next incarnation of Mariano Rivera out of the bullpen but I never liked that trade to begin with.

Better give yourself a gold star.

Could work out well for us, could work out really, really well for Oakland. I like Chavez but I'm not so sure Oakland will miss him at all if they use Hendriks in his role.

KingKat's right counter??? :P

That thread for a Chavez/Hendriks trade was rather huge, but the Jays were really good and the forum was more active.

Imagine adding Hendriks (13.1 K/9 - 0.671 WHIP) and Rosenthal (14.5 K/9 - 0.845 WHIP) to the bullpen with Romano and Dolis.

There would be a lot of bats missed.

That'd be sick, lol.

BJMB should do their part. Do they have an official Twitter handle? They should buy a bunch of bot followers for legitimacy and then be like “hell yeah the Bluejay faithful want you”

I really hope they sign one of the two in the offseason.

I wonder how much they'll get. Relief pitching contracts can be all over the map and the big ones tend to not be good investments. Last year Will Smith got 3/$40M and Pomeranz got 4/$34M, I think those were the two biggest. Smith was a great RP for years and then sucked immediately (AA is the best GM in baseball history tho!!).

Signed on a pillow contract, next year. Yes!

I would sign him to a 2 year 10 mil contract. 5 and 5, 3 and 7, 7 and 3...make the numbers work so you pay more next year or more the year after depending what your preference is. It's effectively 1 and 10, but there is an outside shot Giles could be back just in time for playoffs next year.

“Smith was a great RP for years and now he sucks (16IP that don’t look bad outside of HRs later).... that’s a tough boss lol

On the flip side, Britton has worked out wonderfully... he’s exactly as advertised anyway

The snark aside though, someone like Britton is for a team with a stomach for more payroll. I’m never rooting for the Jays to sign a guy like that

I didn't say he sucks, I said he sucked immediately. Facts.

I don’t think he even deserves that much

I have too much recency bias on the Jays good luck of dumpster diving for the pen to want any kind of serious dollars spent there. Spend on the starting rotation, put Roark in the pen and hope he becomes the next Wade Davis. We'll see if I'm pulling my hair out by next August if the team leads the league in blown saves.

He's got a career 2.45 FIP. Giles made 9.6 this year prorated down to just over a third of that. The Jays handled him terribly. He deserves at least 10, but you're right, he probably gets a 1 and 5 or 6 mil deal in 2022.

Injured in 2019 and 2020 and now tommy john surgery

Doesn’t deserve over 5 mil IMO

Yeah, but if he wasn't allowed to stay in a game and pitch while he was injured at the beginning of the season or rushed back, maybe he would have avoided tommy john.

Maybe he should have told the trainers/Charlie how he was actually feeling instead of lying and saying he was fine

that's NEVER gonna happen. Davis was always filthy but couldn't get it together as a starter. Roark has always been a marginal MLB talent (his best attributes being lack of injuries and running on diesel).

What about signing the prodigal son Aaron Sanchez to a MiLB contract with the expectation of putting him in the BP? Imagine 2015 Sanchez with the bowling ball sinker!

I’d definitely give Sanchez a shot in the pen. I think he’d be fine with coming back here too

His birthday is July 1st - it was pre-ordained that he would be a Blue Jay ;)

And he still has a LOT to prove - I agree he would embrace the opportunity to come back to the Jays and show he still has it!

He'll stay for another year in LA.

If they move to a universal DH (which they should/will) - I suspect you'll see Turner finish off his career in LA (not that he needs to DH next year, but at some point, he probably will).
