TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 They should just give up on the idea of him being anything close to resembling a starting pitcher and just make him a high leverage reliever. He could be a DH/OF/RP that pitches 50 innings and is used in high leverage spots as much as possible. So even though he doesn't get a ton of innings (which protects his arm and allows for more ABs), the limited innings are at least maximized because of the WPA. I like the concept of every Sunday. Fans will get used to what is required for him to prepare (meaning if he needs Saturday off or something like that) and it should alleviate the "Pitching is hurting his hitting" bs should he struggle ... or vice versa of course.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 I don't know man. While I understand that from a WAR perspective, he might be more valuable as a full time RFer, you can't deny it's pretty exciting and unique to see a player who can dominate on the mound and in the batters box. Selfishly - I hope we get to see what he can do as a starter/DH over a couple full seasons. Then it would be interesting if they transitions him into a RF/DH/RP. The other consideration is the Angels probably have an agreement with Ohtani in terms of how he'll be used. They may not yet have the ability to change the original approach (which was part of his original signing). It's not like he's doing both at the same time. It's purely subjective at this point, but I'd rather watch him play gold glove defense in RF for 150 games, put up a 30-30 season, and score 120 runs than DH for 400 PA and throw 70 innings.

Yeah that might not be bad and it would be easier to plan for than trying to use him as a reliever.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 Replacing one MVP candidate (they both got votes last year) with another! Okay, I get that Pillar is right handed, but calling him a "hitter" is questionable at best.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted February 12, 2020 Posted February 12, 2020 the 'two-way player' thing is a bit hokey, and probably needs refining, but is sort of necessary with the pitcher limits on the active roster

Beans Verified Member Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 (edited) Random trivia: 100 years ago today, the Negro National League was founded. The NNL was the first Negro league to last more than one season. And, in fact, from 1924 through 1927, the NNL winner met the champion of the rival Eastern Colored League in the Colored World Series (!), with the NNL winning three out of four. With the Great Depression the NNL had to shut down, but the league came back in 1937 as the Negro American League. Then 10 years later an NAL player named Jackie Robinson broke MLB's colour barrier. https://www.ajc.com/news/negro-leagues-opened-door-players-who-would-change-baseball-forever/Ljxp6BYX8HfT9X8Vtly8bL/ Edited February 13, 2020 by Beans
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Replacing one MVP candidate (they both got votes last year) with another! I've always thought Kevin Pillar was a candidate for an undeserved MVP, especially at his peak. The path would be awesome defense, combined with a high babip to get him just over .300. Hit him in the lead off spot over 162 games on a good team... kind of take his 2015 and boost it just a bit so he hits .300 and gets 100 more at bats high in the order. And he's a no nonsense kind of guy... though looking back on it, I'm not sure that type of player has gotten the MVP before... Undeserved MVPs I guess used to be RBI guys, but now the WAR and it's precursors eliminated that.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 I mean if he actually got a vote for last years season.... How many votes does he get if during one of his good defensive years he... 1. Squeaked over .300 2. Got 700 plate appearances in the lead off spot on a good team
Beans Verified Member Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Man, I'm done talking about Kevin Pillar.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 Man, I'm done talking about Kevin Pillar. Do you think he can hit 50+ doubles in that park?? I think so. And I think he will have dynamite defensive numbers in that park. It's just that he's such a smart guy, I think he'll play all the nooks and crannies well. Where do you think they will hit him in the line up?? Do you think he is a good leader?? Just wondering what your thoughts are on all this.

Beans Verified Member Posted February 13, 2020 Posted February 13, 2020 (edited) I had no idea Astros and Nationals were sharing a Spring Training facility. Having just faced each other in the World Series would make it awkward enough, but if you add in that Dusty Baker, the Nats former manager, is taking over the Astros, and the fact that to the media Houston still has to answer for all the cheating (and they'll softball Washington questions asking them to reflect on all the winning)... should be awesome! Due to a lack of response, I am assuming that BTS decided to ban Boxcar for a specific, benign post in one of the fantasy threads that was objectively not offensive and did nothing more than lightly tickle BTS' thin skin. This is an egregious overstepping of moderator power. How can I report a moderator for abuse of power? Why are we putting up with a message board where mods can single out innocent posters for arbitrary, undeserving punishment? This post is not a joke. I require a detailed response.
