Dokken Verified Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 (edited) Yeah, everything from the shoulder to the fingers is connected and when it comes to pitching injuries the problems are rarely isolated. A weak elbow structurally will put extra pressure on the forearm. yep, just what I was thinking. It's sad that so many of these guys keep burning out their arms. TJS can have a good result (Merryweather?, knock on wood.....), but 18+ mo recovery is so long. Edited September 17, 2020 by Dokken
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 You read my mind..I was looking up pitchers for next year. Bauer, Tanaka, Paxton, Stroman, Odorizzi, cheap kluber flyer? It's pretty slim pickings really. I would do my best to convince the mets they need to trade Degrom, but that's probably a dream. No way Stroman would sign here after the way he left And deGrom is a top 5 pitcher in baseball whom the Mets need desperately. (I suppose if they go full rebuild his 32-36M seasons will start to look pretty expensive to them)
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 I don't envy any front office personnel making a decision on a pitcher. Pitcher's elbow's are a nightmare. Ultimately, it is the pitcher's decision, not the team.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Steve Cohen is buying the Mets. They'll probably spend money this winter, not trade deGrom. The Jays were apparently after Odorizzi this past winter. His velocity and everything is good this season, just some missed time. I could see them revisiting that, especially without the QO involved. I wouldn't mind a Stroman reunion, especially since he's probably looking at a one year deal/pillow contract, but he likely wants no part of Shatkins and Shatkins wants no part of him.

I don't think the Jays are in the right part of the 'curve' to justify spending the prospect capital he would demand.

Sign me up for Bauer at 2 years / $70M (says he wants to go short term so let's see if he follows through!). Stroman - bad blood with the front office and some of the players (Grichuk...) - pass Paxton - nice thought to bring the Canuck in but too much of a DL-case and will be 32 years old I like the idea of taking a shot on Kluber if price is right - he is a grinder!

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Roark is almost at a full -1 fWAR, what are the odds we're eating that second year and sending him on his way, what a disaster signing.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Yes, I was sure Tanaka was going to go down for extended period (TJS) but was one of the few 'lucky' ones to avoid and still be effective for the most part throughout. Speaking of which, he is a FA after this season and 2021 is his age 32 season. Seems like a guy the Jays should be looking into if serious about being a contender, but I would be wary of anything more than 3 yr / $45 M (even that might be too much). They say Giles has a forearm flexor strain, but I wonder to what extent this is actually caused by some issue in the elbow itself (like a partially torn UCL puts extra strain on other parts of the throwing arm?). It (flexor strain) seems to come up a lot. Anyone here have recent info on Romano? I read it was a finger 'pulley ligament' strain (same thing that Sanchez ended up having surgery on in 2018), and that he is 'not yet throwing off the mound'. So he may be just soft tossing to keep the arm a bit limber while hoping that finger heals up. Probably out for the year. I’m usually questioning what teams will pay post-Covid but I think Tanaka will get 3/45+ all day long

If the Jays insist on keeping him, they should use him in the Sam Gaviglio 2019 role. Mop up innings in blowouts, and starter only in case of catastrophic emergency. Otherwise, find someone with an equally bad contract and make the swap. If he’s in next year’s rotation, then that’s not a good look.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 We can't magically make his contract go away though. Jays have shown they are willing to just eat the cost of bad contracts, so if he's unusable there's always the option of DFA'ing him and let somebody else suffer from his s***** pitching.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 If he's gonna be the mop up guy, you'd think you can find someone else to fill that role for a fraction of the cost. But the Jays are paying him $12m regardless. Let him throw low leverage innings out of the pen on days when the good relievers need a rest. Can he be replaced by someone making the minimum in that role? Of course, but unless you can make his contract disappear, at least that way you'll get some value out of him. If they release him, I'm fine with that too. Or flip him for Familia on the Mets. Nearly identical money left for both players. Mets could probably use rotation depth, and Jays have good track record with relievers in recent years.

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 I'm not sure who decides our lineups each day, but someone should tell whoever that is that Gurriel is a good hitter. Batting him 7th.....just ridiculous.

Batting him 7th.....just ridiculous. I am leaning towards lineups coming from above Buntoyo's head. Last year he was routinely batting Gurriel and Vlad in the same spots (at least it seemed that way). Now players are moving around all over the place for no reason at all. Either Charlie has lost whatever mind he had, or he's following orders.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Try a top 2 pitcher in baseball, and he's not 2. Sixto Sanchez might be better

Ray Verified Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Would be fantastic if Rogers allows us to ramp up payroll and we're aggressive towards the top end of the free agent market this offseason. I can envision a scenario where other teams aren't committed to shelling out guaranteed contracts with the economic uncertainty of 2021 (even though things seems to be relatively stabilizing). We're likely looking at another depressed free agent market. Maybe 5 years, $110M gets it done for George Springer?
Dokken Verified Member Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Bauer won't sign a 2 year deal. 1 year max. DUDE, he said that a good while back. I heard he had already been 'waffling' when asked about it more recently. I think Mike's suggestion of $40 M for 1 year is forseeable, but I still think he takes 2 / 70 if he likes the team offering. Jays probably need to go 1 / 45 ?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 Bauer is going to want 1 year / 40M and he has to pitch every 4th day. And then he'll negotiate down from that. I heard him on Sirius today and he wants to pitch 44 starts next year. I think the ability to pitch more often might be a bigger factor than money.

I think the ability to pitch more often might be a bigger factor than money. Bauer wanting to pitch on 3 days rest is actually a benefit for the Jays. Instead of throwing tire fire out there like Roark, just cave into Bauer's demands, and since it's a one year deal he's looking for, run his ass to the ground if it helps you win. Win/win.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 now if they can just assemble a competitive starting rotation...... I think they’ll get there. Pearson will be better next year. Should be able to find at least one useful starter between Hatch/Merryweather/Kay. Stripling at the back of the rotation will work. The FO should have their sights set on signing at least a #2 starter type this offseason to complete the rotation.

Anderson will definitely be gone ($500K buyout is a done deal at this point). Roark may get another chance since they are on the hook for the full $12M, but won't last through May, if he continues to pitch the same garbage as this season. Seems to be a lack of command, getting behind in the count and no 'stuff' to battle out of it. The guy had 14.7 fWAR in 7 seasons from 2013-19 (average 2.1 per season), but garbage right now.
