Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I’d like Espinal (who was protected from the rule 5 draft) to be the back up middle infielder ahead of Urena/Valera. But yeah we have enough infield players now. I'm quite fine jettisoning Urena into the sun, I'm a LITTLE bit intrigued by Valera, but not enough to really care that much. I'm not really up on Espinal's fielding, but if he can capably backup SS, his bat would seem to play.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Shaw suck against lefties. We need a right smasher.... Bring back Edwin
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 (edited) I think Edwin is still possible unless the team wants to keep DH open. The DH options right now (assuming Teoscar starts in the OF) are Fisher, Drury, backup catcher, McKinney, Alford, Davis, etc. I don’t think this move makes Edwin impossible though lessens the chances depending on what the payroll is. If anything they need a back IF who hits lefties and can platoon with Shaw, though that will probably end up being Drury because he hits from the right side (doesn’t hit lefties though). Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I would enjoy watching this lineup: 6 Bichette 4 Biggio 5 Guerrero 0 Encarnacion 3 Shaw 7 Gurriel 9 Grichuk 8 Hernandez 2 Jansen
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Sign Ryu and some relievers as a filers and this was the best off-season in a long time.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Good signing. Would still want Edwin here for 1/10.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I dig it Punt urena Option drury Option rowdy Sign Edwin Sign ryu Piggyback borucki and Thornton in 5 spot until Pearson comes up or shoemaker gets hurt, whichever happens first. Kay/wags as multi inning rp or aaa depth
Ray Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Pretty crazy to think that signing Ryu to a $20M AAV deal would still only put us at $106M opening day payroll, according to Cots. We could realistically sign Ryu and Edwin.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Speaking of, what actually happened with Shaw last season? His BABIP was low, but not outrageously low. His barrel% was fine. His avg exit velo and Hard-Hit% was fine. BB% was fine. His just started striking out a lot all of sudden? His avg launch angle was incredibly high too. Maybe the fly ball revolution philosophy didn’t resonate with him.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 (edited) Love this signing. I don't think this eliminates EE in anyway but again I don't think EE serves much of a purpose on this team. Edited December 22, 2019 by Slade tweet
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Love this signing. Eddie on the cheap is a 25 percent above league average hitter who mentors the young guys and at a reasonable cost you can flip him for something at the deadline to a contender
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I like the deal. The fact that he is left handed hitter like Rowdy, is immaterial as Rowdy has shown to hit LHP very well. I think he sees the ball better against lefties. With the 26 man roster, there is certainly room for EE as well, it would be good to have a power guy on the bench for pinch hitting, and injury replacement. There is a lot of upside to this deal, with no risk.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Love this signing. I don't think this eliminates EE in anyway but again I don't think EE serves much of a purpose on this team. The only purpose he serves is being an excellent hitter in a position of need, a good mentor to the young latino players, and a fan favourite. Other than that I don't know why we'd sign him to a zero risk deal.
keggy Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Tellez is like 5 years younger and projected to outhit Shaw next year so I'm not entirely clear on why one needs to be banished over the other. Where Shaw's true value comes is in his positional flexibility. Dump Drury finally, let Tellez fight for a 1B/DH position, and NRI some players who can hit LHP. Also now Edwin makes no sense for this team at all. Guerrero is the worst defensive third baseman in baseball and takes days off on a regular basis. Unless we're serious about contending next year the roster spot and positional flexibility is more valuable than Edwin's bat.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 3B - Vlad 1B - Shaw DH - EE BN - Tellez/Drury AAA - Tellez/Drury I don't see the problem. Tellez and Drury both have options IIRC so nobody is being cut or banished. People will get hurt or suck and there will be playing time for all. If Tellez performs he can earn a platoon role - he should not be just gifted a starting gig.

In the public eye I mean. This wouldn’t be like signing cj cron. - if starting from scratch, no emotion involved , wouldn’t it be best to put Shaw at 3b and vlad at 1b vs Rhp?

Edwin has played on 4 teams since 2016. He gets it and would probably HOPE to be traded to a contender at the deadline. Shaw @ 3B and Vlad at DH is probably optimal for maximizing 2020 wins but they won't do it because Vlad's 3B development will take priority.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I dunno. I think ee would love a 1-2 year deal to end career in Toronto. Win or lose. He is loved here. We are all in agreement that vlads “development “ ends when Groshans is ready for 3b right? Imagine a scenario where Pearson and Groshans didn’t have a lost year of development and how that would look.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 With Shaw's positional flexibility and inability to hit LHP, I think you can have Edwing split time at 1B and still have half of the DH at-bats for guys like Fisher and/or rest days for regulars.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 I still want Edwin back. Shaw should only face right handed pitching. Tellez can play in AAA or be moved to any team that wants him no issues.
The Iceman Verified Member Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Given it's 1Y/4M, I'd guess it's more likely he could replace Drury eventually, but begin as Smoak's replacement. I wonder if this takes us out on Edwin? He would be a bit redundant after Shaw. Lets sign EE and make Rowdy redundant. roll me out a lineup of Bo Vladdy Biggio EE Shaw Lourdes Randal Catcher Outfielder TBA And bye-bye Drury, McKinney, back to Buffalo Rowdy

I will personally drive Rowdy-Drury-INSERT OTHER CRAPPY BJ NAMES HER to the airport. Add that to a super big fan fav, likable team mate and WELCOME HOME EE
