I'd rather not use up a roster spot for a Shaw platoon partner (which, let's face it, would probably be Drury), but we have enough positional flexibility to sit him against most LHPs and not need someone specifically for that role. As it stands right now 4/5 of our OFs are RHBs, and Gurriel at least can cover the infield if needed.

How much are we willing to spend for a RH platoon 1B vs would the same money be better spent elsewhere

The other unanswerable question is will Shaw be healthy this year and will he hit to his previous career level. Insurance might not be a bad idea.

Flores should be fairly cheap and can also play 2B/3B. Mashed lefties, would be an excellent bench piece.

Also 26 man rosters this year

I'd prefer another position player to another bullpen arm but what will Montoyo want?

Except his wRC+ v. LHP was 67 in 2018 (151 in 2019). I like the concept though.

Drury is going to be platoon with Shaw in all likelihood. Shatkins likes him and they tendered him, so that's his likely role even though he's not a guy who mashes lefties. We do need someone who can play SS and cover for Bichette though.

Drury has options and Atkins went on record saying that he doesn’t have a guaranteed roster spot next year. I don’t think he’s much of a consideration if they’re really motivated to add

The free agent SS options remaining are horrendous.

Jordy Mercer

Jose Iglesias

Hechavarría

Tim Beckham

Addison Russell

All decent backup SS options.

Addison Russell averaged over 2 WAR / year until last season. Don't see the harm in picking him up on the cheap, provided his mental state checks out.

Not exactly the signing a team with a slight PR problem needs to be making

Cancel/outrage culture would eat Shatkins alive on social media if they signed Russell.

A team with no social media presence or fanbase (aka the Rays) could get away with signing him. No one would notice or care.

Or the Rangers. He'd fit right in.

Meh, I think there would be a little off season hissy fit by some after he is signed, that would die away after a week or so, overtaken by other news.

Houston is still taking heat for Osuna.

No thanks.

I’d just sign Iglesias and be done with it. All we need is a good glove to cover short, he’d be fine.

Isn't Iglesias going to fall into Galvis territory? He'll want to go somewhere he's a starter because he thinks he's a starter even though he's really a fringe starter? I mean Iglesias would be a great add, but Cesar just got $6.5M - won't Iglesias get something similar? Do we want to pay him that much to be our backup IF? I mean maybe we do.

Travis Shaw signed a one year deal to be the regular first baseman with performance incentives according to Shaw the Blue Jays offered him the everyday position with regular at bats as part of a deal he was looking for to rebound his career. In order to make room for him on the roster Richard Urena was DFAed. Shaw is no stranger to Canada his dad Jeff Shaw pitched 3 years in Montreal with the Expos organization back in the early 90's. Shaw will bring some versatility to the Blue Jays as he can play 3rd, 2nd and 1st base making it the only vacant position available with the departure of Smoak.

So the Jays are stockpiling all the kids of former players? Who's next?

Yeah he was on MLB Network today. He said that half a dozen other teams told him they wanted to sign him. But several wouldn't promise full time at bats. And others (Including Boston he said) were making him wait for an actual contract offer while they worked on other things. Jays offered full playing time and a contract on the table and he grabbed it because he's seen guys "get screwed" the last few years while waiting too long. Also he says he didn't care if he played 1B or 3B as long as he got full time at bats.

I'm cool with this deal, especially if he returns to his 2017-18 form.

If he returns to his 2017-18 form, you're going to be a lot more than 'cool' with this deal.

In 2018 he would have been the best player on the Jays by a sizable margin Edited by G-Snarls
