Laika Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 That’s so bad that you have to assume Kluber’s medicals are not good
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Wow how the hell did Texas get him for NOTHING. Gotta think at least 20 other teams would have offered something better
Ray Verified Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 nope that's it...salary dump. Where were the Jays in all of this. There’s more, according to Levi Weaver on Twitter
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 (edited) That’s so bad that you have to assume Kluber’s medicals are not good he had a fracture forearm. How did Pearson bounce back from a fractured forearm? Prior to that Kluber averaged over 200 innings and a 2.84 FIP from 2014 to 2018. This deal make me sick to my stomach. Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Some guy just said that's not the whole deal. Obviously if that's all there is to it, it's a historically poor return.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 There’s more, according to Levi Weaver on Twitter There better be, Deschields who isn't very good is a free agent in 2022.
Nofunatall Verified Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 There better be, Deschields who isn't very good is a free agent in 2022. Texas taking on all of Kluber's salary in the deal.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Texas taking on all of Kluber's salary in the deal. so for an extra 6 mil and spare parts we could have had kluber at the top of the rotation instead of Roark. That's hilarious.
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 so we signed Roark for 2 years 24 instead getting Kluber for 2 years 35 and spare parts. We gave Cleveland Josh Donaldson for nothing. Did they not owe us? Nah baldo got Merryweather He has no influence with anybody it seems
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 f*** you Shapiro Where my ball club gone
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Rosenthal just retweeted this, so looks like it might be just the 2-for-1 originally reported.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Would, like, Alford and Giles have landed him?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Kluber on a 1+1 deal seems more sensible than overpaying someone in free agency, especially if the cost was minimal. I don't know who the Jays have that Cleveland would perceive as equal or better than Clase, but I'm sure something could have gotten done without having it hurt the Jays farm system. A minor league reliever and an arb elible replacement level OF doesn't seem like a price that would be hard to beat.

They must feel like Kluber won't regain his form. Maybe they've spotted something with Deshields and think they can fix him. Who knows. I don't think we have an equivalent pitcher to Clase, but Teoscar probably beats out Deshields.

We're optimistically targeting 2022 and if that doesn't work out 2023 will surely be our year.

Deshields has 2 years of control left. Kluber had a broken forearm. Pearson bounced back nice from a broken forearm. It's not like Kluber was crap for an extended period. He basically didn't pitch last year due to injury. He was one of the most reliable starters in baseball from 2014 to 2018.

Kluber wasn't exactly stellar in his starts prior to the broken arm, and then had some other injuries after while rehabbing. He's also 34 this year. It's certainly possible they know something we don't. That said, I think they got fleeced too. I was just trying to find some justification from their end. Maybe they'll even try to start Clase.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Would, like, Alford and Giles have landed him? Given what Texas gave up, we probably could have done Alford and SRF. It was a pure salary dump for Cleveland from what I see.

This deal make me sick to my stomach. you can't compare a 20 year old to a 34 year old when it comes to injury recovery. The 2021 option now vests at 160 IP assuming he is not on the DL at the end of the season.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 More important than Cleveland thinking Kluber won't recover...there were obviously not a lot of teams willing to give up much for him. Clase is a 21 year old who has already looked good relieving in the majors and has 6 full years of control. He is essentially Jordan Hicks prior to the injury.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Yeah, I’m thinking there might be something really off with Klubers medicals if teams didn’t step up and beat that. I mean, the Yankees could’ve easily beaten that package. So could the Padres and Angels who both have significantly better farm systems than the Rangers. Seems a little odd.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 The Indians pulled off a good trade. They picked up a good defensive centerfielder, and a potential future closer with 6 years of control. They dumped 15 mill off the books, which will allow them to sign a replacement for Kluber. Or go in another direction as desired. I cant see the Jays FO willing to part with a Clase quality prospect, to get a SP with questionable health issues.

Nothing in his numbers suggests Clase is the 2nd coming of Aroldis Chapman. Deshields is a free agent in 2 years. They wanted to get rid of salary and got a pitcher in return. It may be a good trade for them if they're waiving the white flag and looking to rebuild. Kluber comes with risk and he could very well be a top 5 cy young candidate next year. His injuries weren't one's that players typically can't fully recover from.
