Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 It wouldn't hurt to give him a look at the MLB level. He can't even get in the AAA lineup...they sat him in his third game back and he was 3 for 8 with a homer in his first 2. It's he hurt?
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 It's he hurt? my initial thought was he was coming up...when I found out he wasn't I thought maybe he was hurt. I hope not. The kid has some momentum going. He's running out of options so it would be good to get him a look at some point.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 What WAR would Teo put up if he gets up to the 107 wRC+ he posted last year, combined with this year's improved base running and defense?

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Looks like next year's OF could be Fisher, Teoscar, Gurriel and Grichuk. Doesn't exactly look like a WS-winning OF but there's some upside there and it's cheap which should allow us to spend more on pitching. The problem I have with it is that while it's not horrific defensively I doubt it's very good either. Our infield defense kind of sucks ass with Vlad, Biggio and Bo. Throw in decent at best OF defense and the questions with our pitching and run prevention is probably going to be a major problem. At least Jansen is nails behind the dish.

Well it’s not like everyone’s position is secure, apart from Grichuk (and that’s only because of his contract). Gurriel could still become more of a utility player if he’s needed in the infield. Hernandez is still an experiment at CF and could see quite a bit of time at DH if we don’t replace Smoak with a vet. Fisher has potential, but hasn’t done anything yet. With next year’s new rules - 26 man and 3 batter minimum for pitchers - we may even see us carry 5 outfielders (if Gurriel and Hernandez aren’t full time OF) for some of the season if we want a look at Alford or another acquisition.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 can we bring up Alford. I kinda wish they'd just release Alford so I could stop reading about how people want him up with the team. Alford sucks. Can we all just get past this?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Oh dear: Sticking him on the IL for the next two to three weeks really doesn't matter. It would be nice to get to see him make multiple healthy appearances going into the offseason though.

I would guess 2.5 or so. He's at 0.9 now in 87 games so would be on track for 1.7 or so in a full season. So add a little bit of offense and he's probably up another .5 to 1 WAR. Interestingly I thought he was exactly the same as last year in terms of offense, and he basically is in terms of obp and slg, but the wRC+ is quite a bit lower, I guess it really is a juiced up year. OK. Another question. What wRC+ would Vladimir Guerrero JR have if he optimized his laungh angle?? This weekend was my first chance to see Vlad and in real life it's like what I see on TV. Hard hit ground balls and viscous line drives (118 mph line drive single off the top of the wall). If he increased his launch angle slightly would his numbers be way better?? Or would the increased popups and high flies to the track compensate for grounders and line drives off the wall becoming line drives and homers??

The popups would increase to an extent, but it's hard to say how much. The bigger concern would be tinkering too much with the swing that brought him to this point. I doubt it's as simple as just deciding to increase your launch angle. Besides, he's got a 151 wRC+ since the break so it may be best to just let him do his thing.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 PVR’ed yesterday’s game and watched it last night. 118 MPH single by Vlad that pretty much almost went through the wall. This kid does some jaw dropping things. Unfortunately he also does this @ 3B, and not in a good way lol. I had to watch that hit 5 times. Our D and pitching are massive issues but the team offensively is fun to watch now.

Shulman was saying "it's not a home run" in flight but then the ball hit like 6 inches below the top of the wall. Might have been the lowest HR ever if it had a tiny bit more backspin or lift.

I have absolutely no problem with this OF. Young, athletic, fast. Defensively, I really like them. Gurriel, Grichuk and Fisher are above average in the corners and I think Teo and Fisher can be average in CF. I think we get just enough offense out of them too. Sign Moose to play 3rd (until Groshans is ready), move Vladdy to 1st and our infield defense will be much improved.
flafson Verified Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 Neil Ramirez called up today. Interesting move considering he was really bad for the Indians and he only pitched 1 inning for us in AAA. Seems like we really need some warm bodies...
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 2 days off this week for Vlad....0 for Bo...wtf
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 2 days off this week for Vlad....0 for Bo...wtf One of them is fat with previous injuries likely related to said weight problems and the other is not.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 The Jays are giving young players days off and/or using the DH spot to get Galvis in the lineup. I don't even want Galvis back next year if that's going to be the way Montoyo uses him.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 One of them is fat with previous injuries likely related to said weight problems and the other is not. He could still DH

But I doubt the end the Vladdy at third base experiment until they expect to be more competitive. Expect him to get another full season at third next year and make a decision after that. Apparently they are trying to convince Vlad to spend his winter in Florida so they can work with him on his training and diet habits. Lets hope that happens.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 11, 2019 Posted August 11, 2019 He could still DH DH'ing doesn't eliminate taking swings and running, which are two of Vlad's injuries over the last couple of years.
