Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2018 Posted August 1, 2018 The Dodgers and Red Sox front office have both publicly suggested that an Osuna trade was never a consideration for them. Sounding more and more like we were lucky to get what we did for him.

baseball player 3.0 Verified Member Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 I was never sold on Osuna, I never felt confidence with him on the mound like I did with Ward and Henke when we had our playoff run in 15-16 You actually felt as confident with Osuna on the mound as you would with Ward or Henke back in the day?
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 You actually felt as confident with Osuna on the mound as you would with Ward or Henke back in the day? Yes, Post-Season numbers don't lie.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Henke always brought out the utmost in confidence. Wardo at times would bring out the least. When Ward was the setup guy, there were plenty of times when he would be incredibly hittable. I think he lost 10 games 1 year. When he finally closed games after Henke left, he became quite good.

polar bear Verified Member Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Every time I have seen Giles, he's pumping fastballs down the middle on first pitches and when he falls behind. He's rather predictable and doesn't pitch to the corners very much. Hopefully Russ Martin can help with that. Lol ! Russ Martin can't help himself.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 Lol ! Russ Martin can't help himself. Martin is still hitting the ball hard. Hes ran into some bad luck. His walk rate is actually good and his OBP is decent in comparison to where his average is. I would not be surprised if he had a hot month to bring his numbers to respectability.

He's not even a black hole anymore like earlier in the season when his BABIP was around .160, he's at a 90 wRC+ right now with above average defense as usual. Just like every year, Russell Martin continues to not be the issue.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 2, 2018 Posted August 2, 2018 It's crazy to think about how good Russell Martin is, historically, as a catcher. He's accumulated career fWAR equal to Yadi, who people talk about as a HOF candidate. Russell is 29th in career fWAR for catchers since 1900. If he can limp to a few more WAR he might finish as a top 20 or 25 catcher, basically of all time. Nuts.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 Now please give your narrative about Osuna No kidding. We did not trade pre-DV Osuna. We won that trade. Period. Osuna may excel for 2-3 years in Houston, but that org is taking (rightly so) a lot of flack, and this move may backfire. No way do we get a better trade than that with anyone. In 2018 anyway.

wamco Verified Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 No. Useless for over 40 pct of contract
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 No. Useless for over 40 pct of contract yet still supplied surplus value.

And I didn't even mention the NINE postseason appearances across four different organizations, which is kind of absurd.
el diego Verified Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 Is it really that crazy? Everyone always knew Martin was good, I thought.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 Is it really that crazy? Everyone always knew Martin was good, I thought. Same career WAR as Yadi Molina (and I think Martin even ranks as a better framer). People jizz over Yadi.
wamco Verified Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 yet still supplied surplus value. So he could have went apeshit in season on e and Hit 60 hr and 120 rbi. And sucked in years 2 3 4 5 and accomplished that.

Well said. People have to realise his value went down by his own doing. NOthing the team could have done to change that. what they did is reduce additional damage and get more then his current value. Houston is getting lots of flack now and they are the champs and one of baseballs best teams, imagine how worst this flack would have been on a rebuilding team, where fans have nothing else to talk about but an abusive player. Like it or not (i do), this is a new reality in our society , look at urban myer, one of college football great, in trouble, not for abusing, but for knowing about an abuse.

What's your point? Look man - Martin's contract is pretty much exactly what teams sign up for when they sign a FA for 4+ years. You're hoping to get 2 or 3 good seasons (which align with your win curve) and you may end up with some below average years at the end of the contract. In the end - teams are trying to find surplus value in all levels of the 25 man roster. Martin provided surplus value over course of the contract and helped us make the ALCS twice. What else could you possible ask for?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 3, 2018 Posted August 3, 2018 Yes. What's your point? His point is he needs something to complain about because hes not having any fun this season. Martin hitting .190 and making 20M is a year is an easy target by the casuals eye.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2019 Posted May 16, 2019 (edited) After the Happ trade, I'm worried that we wont get good prospects. 3 months of JA Happ vs 1.5 years of Ken Giles are different commodities. So last year the Twins got RHP Jorge Alcala and CF Gilberto Celestino for 1.5 years of Ryan Pressly. Orioles got RHP Cody Caroll, RHP Dillon Tate, LHP Josh Rogers for Zach Britton coming off an injury. Padres got C Francisco Mejia for Brad Hand, Adam Cimber. White Sox got LHP Kodi Medeiros, RHP Wilber Perez for Joakim Soria Not exactly a king’s randsom but Giles has been elite this year. You’re not getting an Andrew Miller type package of Clint Frazier, Justus Sheffield, Ben Heller, and J.P. Feyereisen but there’s examples of closers dealt for nice hauls in the past.
