TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 I'll move the BA most recent scouting reports Wall Ranked Colorado Rockies #18 prospect after the 2017 season The Rockies drafted Wall 35th overall in 2014, making him the highest drafted prep second baseman since the draft was consolidated into one phase in 1987. Wall's play at second base proved inadequate, however, and he began a transition to center field at high Class A Lancaster in 2017. The effort was cut short when he separated his left shoulder diving for a ball in May and missed the rest of the season. Wall has struggled to live up to his draft pedigree as a gifted hitter. He has a solid feel for contact but little power and does not drive the ball. He has plus speed to make it work as a singles hitter with a lot of stolen bases, although the Rockies are optimistic he can grow into extra-base power as he gets stronger. Defensively, Wall was nearly unplayable at second base and labrum surgery on his right shoulder in high school sapped his arm strength. Wall has hope to make it as a contact and speed-type, but now has major surgery on both shoulders to deal with and needs to find a defensive home. He is expected to be healthy for the start of 2018. Spanberger Ranked Colorado Rockies #28 prospect after the 2017 season Spanberger finally settled in at first base his junior year at Arkansas, and made more starts (58) in 2017 than the previous two years combined (55). A catcher/third basemen in high school in Granite City, Ill., he saw limited time as a DH his freshman year at Arkansas and played some outfield his sophomore year. He finally became a regular as a first baseman in 2017, and responded by becoming the sixth player in Arkansas history to hit 20 home runs. The Rockies drafted Spanberger in the sixth round in 2017, signed him for $260,200, and watched with glee as he hit 19 more home runs in 60 games at Rookie-level Grand Junction. Power is Spanberger's lone plus tool. He is physically imposing at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds and can turn around premium velocity and send it a long way. His below-average feel for hitting pushed him down draft boards despite his raw power, and that also showed up with 71 strikeouts in his pro debut. Spanberger is a work in progress defensively at first, but has embraced the challenge. He will head to low Class A Asheville in 2018 and keep rising as long as he gets to his power.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 From FanGraphs: 7. Forrest Wall, CF Drafted: 1st Round, 2014 from Orangewood Christian HS (FL) Age 21 Height 6’0 Weight 176 Bat/Throw L/R Tool Grades (Present/Future) Hit Raw Power Game Power Run Fielding Throw 45/55 45/45 20/30 60/60 40/45 40/40 Wall has been hurt numerous times throughout his career, and the injuries have wreaked havoc on his development and arm strength. Despite his speed, a lack of arm strength could push him to left field instead of center (he’s already had to abandon second base), but Wall is so fast that he could be plus there. His combination of patience, bat control, and nearly average power don’t look terrible in left either. His range of potential outcomes starts with a bench outfield role on the low end and looks something like Brett Gardner on the other. 20. Chad Spanberger, 1B Drafted: 6th Round, 2017 from Arkansas Age 21 Height 6’3 Weight 235 Bat/Throw L/R Tool Grades (Present/Future) Hit Raw Power Game Power Run Fielding Throw 30/45 70/70 40/55 40/40 40/45 50/50 Spanberger went nuts during the SEC tournament with lots of scouts watching and his stock skyrocketed shortly before the draft. He has big raw power and hit 40% of his balls in play over 100 mph last year. He’s a stiff, first-base-only athlete, so he’ll have to hit all the way up the minor-league ladder. He’s off to a slow start in part because he has walked, as of publication time, in less than 2% of his 2018 plate appearances.
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2018 Author Posted July 26, 2018 BP from November 2018 had neither in their Rockeis top-10, but had this on Wall: Forrest Wall 2B/OF, High-A Lancaster There unfortunately isn’t much to write about here, as Wall dislocated his shoulder on an outfield dive after just 22 games and missed the remainder of the year. It was a tough break, as he’d shown flashes of improvement in the box early on. He added some bulk, and did well to barrel velocity he’d previously struggled to turn on with any authority in his first tour of the Cal League. The lost developmental time really hurt, however, in the form of lost centerfield reps after he converted to the grass full-time last off-season. He displayed every ounce of rawness you’d expect from a brand-new convert in April, and with speed for the position already borderline, it’s going to be a long slog for him to show he can hang at the position. Next season will be a gargantuan one for the former first-rounder’s standing in the organization, as he’ll require 40-man protection at its culmination. – Wilson Karaman

The makings of a solid-average hit tool remain apparent, though lost developmental time has handicapped his ability to stay focused situationally, and he still comes out of his game and his swing at times. He’s a good pure hitter, though, and has speed and aggressiveness to burn on the bases. Lancaster is a difficult place to learn outfield reads on the fly, so potential for significant development in that area in higher minors. There is a considerable gap to make up at present. He doesn’t show an especially natural feel for center, which leaves him with a likely destination in left, where his speed can help him play as a solid defender. The potential for fill-in utility at second and in center opens up a path to some bench versatility even if the hit tool doesn’t quite get all the way there.

I think I read he's starting in Lansing. Yeah they need to move him up quick. Although if Noda is any indication, they will take their time.

I think someone on the twitter said he is going to Lansing, which might mean Noda is going up. Or maybe they will salvage the useful parts from both Noda and Spangenberg and make one very useful Frankenstein player?
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 If Spanberger can repeat what he has done this year going up levels...or even 3/4 of it how can anyone be upset at this deal.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Just put both Noda and Spanberger in Dunedin. Clemens is trash.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 So if this is what Oh is worth, then Axford & Clippard must have zero value. Wouldn't expect them to return much, but there are levels of value between this return and "zero".
BTS Community Moderator Posted July 26, 2018 Author Posted July 26, 2018 So if this is what Oh is worth, then Axford & Clippard must have zero value. Yeah. Why would a contender want John Axford?
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Yeah. Why would a contender want John Axford? Exactly. I imagine that Oh, Axford and Clippard were all signed as potential trade candidates if the season went sideways. We went 1 for 3, which is probably above average when you're picking off the scrap heap. I imagine F.Liriano has more value than Ax or Clippard right now simply because you can use him as a LOOGY (he's dominated lefties all year) out of the pen in the playoffs.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Yeah. Why would a contender want John Axford? Have you seen the Cardinals bullpen?
TheRustler Verified Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 If Spanberger can repeat what he has done this year going up levels...or even 3/4 of it how can anyone be upset at this deal. That’s a substantial ask of him.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Have you seen the Cardinals bullpen? Didn't realize the choice was between nothing and Axford. This changes everything!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Oh has been pretty damn good plus he's got another cheap year on top of this one. I'm glad we moved him, even for the package we got, but I think the Rockies did pretty well here.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Didn't realize the choice was between nothing and Axford. This changes everything! My point is that he'd be a clear upgrade to the Cardinals bullpen. They would likely be willing to give up something.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 My point is that he'd be a clear upgrade to the Cardinals bullpen. They would likely be willing to give up something. I got your point, and my point is why the hell would they go after Axford when they could trade next to nothing for guys who are a lot better?
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 I can see a team taking Axford for a middle relief role. No sense keeping him around if you can move him anyway. As for the Oh trade. I was honestly hoping for a bit more considering he has that option and isn't a pure rental. But the 2 guys we have are interesting at least. Spanberger has shown big time power albeit being old for the level still 70 raw power plays. And if he starts moving faster after this year he can catch up to his age group fast with that power. Forrest Wall was a guy I was intrigued about when he was draft eligible. Apparently he was bad at second base but had the athleticism to play a decent CF. If he can get that bat going and continue show casing his speed and have potential position versatility as well. We may have something here. Heres hoping we can send out all of these FA relief pitchers.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 If Axford gets moved, I'd assume we're about to have a record number of deadline deals for s***** relievers.
