Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 Ugly starting 9 At least we have some depth this year. So we won't be subjected to Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney getting everyday at-bats. We have major league performers across the diamond with depth and some decent prospects knocking on the door in AAA. We could use another big bat absolutely but the Jays are in pretty good shape all things considered.

DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 Good power potential, but yeah, could use some OBP. Travis and Tulo bouncing back, at least the half season they actually spend on the field, would be helpful. It would be nice...I have given up on tulo, he has been awful for the most part.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 20, 2018 Posted January 20, 2018 It would be nice...I have given up on tulo, he has been awful for the most part. He put up 2.9 WAR in 2016 and is projected for 2 next year. The cost per WAR isn't good, but it could be a lot worse. His salary decreasing for the last year and option year if desired is also very fortunate.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Ugly starting 9 I'm not seeing Ryan Goins anywhere, so I'm pretty happy.
Key22 Verified Member Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 Atkins seemed so excited to land Grichuk as if he just traded a Gretzky rookie card for a pack of gum. Does Atkins see the next Smoak? The entire fan-base thought the Smoak deal was idiocy at the time - so here's hoping Atkins pulls another rabbit.
ColdPint Verified Member Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I'd be wary of expecting a repeat season like last from Smoak. It's much more likely that he'll revert to career norms than last year being the new norm.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 I still believe in Steve. I don't get why we'd be playing Morales full time just because he has a s***** contract.

I think they expect more Jay Bruce post-2015 rather than Smoak, but since Grichuk can actually run and play D, that's a pretty damn good player.

He strikes out a ton and gets on base well below league average. That’s not a “pretty damn good player”. Yet. He’s still young though.

I said if he sees an improvement in his performance like Bruce saw after 2015 that combined with his D and base running, that would be a damn good player (whereas Bruce can't run or play D so it's not as valuable).

Ace Verified Member Posted January 21, 2018 Posted January 21, 2018 We didn't give up a whole lot for a young, controllable guy with some possible upside. Pretty solid deal.

I like the upside in Grichuk, but the idea that we didn't give up talent back is silly. Greene has some good stuff. Time will tell how it develops. Leone had a really good year last year and he's got 4 years left as well.

Leone had a really good year last year and he's got 4 years left as well. To play devils advocate, Conner Greene has a high potential bust rate, and Dominic Leone is unlikely to repeat the same performance he had last year. I would argue we didn't give up all too much. Every time you can trade a non top 100 prospect in Conner Greene plus a non-elite reliever for a potential everyday OF with 3 years of control, you do it.
Shart Verified Member Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 He strikes out a ton and gets on base well below league average. That’s not a “pretty damn good player”. Yet. He’s still young though. Jays are notorious for resurrecting players careers and finding players hitting potential. Just look at Jose Bautista, Edwin Encarnacion, Justin Smoak. This list goes on and on. The point I'm trying to make is that the Jays have found this fountain of success by buying low on players with some potential but who are rough around the edges. The Jays management then acquires these players, rubs some Jays hitting magic on them, and then we have these super star type players at a bargain price. The key to this strategy is finding players who have some level of control so that we can gain the benefits before they become free agents and then need to be paid the big bucks. As long as the Jays can keep scouting these players form other teams roster, this success is sustainable and is unlimited. Only downside is that other teams might be hesitant to make trades with the Shat-crew because of this proven strategy.

It's a perfectly reasonable deal from both sides. The Cards had a logjam in the OF after their acquisition of Ozuna, so they traded a guy with flaws in his game for a flamethrowing prospect whom they'll hope to fix and a reliever who was excellent as recently as last year to bolster their depleted bullpen. The Jays moved a risky prospect with terrible results and high bust chance plus a reliever who randomly had a great year following two brutal ones for a controllable OF who runs and plays defense well and big power upside with the bat.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 I hope Greene turns into Syndergaard.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 I hope Greene turns into Syndergaard. I mean, at his age Syndergaard had already established himself as an MLB ace, but sure Greene could totally do that.

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2018 Posted January 22, 2018 (edited) I hope Greene turns into Syndergaard. More like Aaron Sanchez at this point. EDIT: At best. Even Sanchez's s***** peripherals in the minors were better than Greene's. Edited January 22, 2018 by Captain Adama
