Cbert Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 yeah, um...the prospects we got today aren't going to help get us Sonny Gray. We'd be looking at giving up Alford + SRF + Zeuch + for Gray I'd imagine. I don't know if it would've been that steep considering the A's took a package with a lot of potential but is quite damaged right now. I think that deal with Hernandez instead of Alford might have been enough.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Gray isn't an ace though. It was a good trade for both sides. A's got a lot of risk coupled with upside, and traded Gray who's more good than great. He's basically Stroman, both in size and in results.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 If Yankees have a full rotation that is healthy and 100%, I would have Gray behind Severino, Tanaka, and Pineda. Gray is a solid pitcher, though on a team with World Series aspirations, he's likely a No. 3 at best.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Probably enough to cover the difference between Liriano and Aoki's salaries. I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than just making it even. Why take Aoki at all in that case? Couldn't we just have paid all of Liriano's salary and not taken Aoki?
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 It'll take some time for Pineda to be fully healthy again lol.

Couldn't we just have paid all of Liriano's salary and not taken Aoki? It's possible they might've actually wanted Aoki as a short term plug I guess? His profile is absolutely gross to me but he's been a league average or slightly better hitter his entire MLB tenure, makes a lot of contact and might not be a total disaster in the outfield (?). I hope we don't keep him past next year but it's not like it's Billy Burns who is legitimately horrible (sorry Abom).
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Not happy about this trade Day.. We still have Bautista, we should have sold high on Smoak, we should have got something other than a bag of balls for Estrada and Barney. We should have got rid of one of the Pierce, Morales, Smoak combo...while their value is high.. I think this FO overvalues what we have and think we have a better team then we really do...

I think you're over estimating the return the Jays would have gotten for someone like Estrada. Chances are that the offers for estrada were light enough to warrant the FO for holding on to him. Morales and Pearce likely would've netted a pitiful return as well. It was a buyers market and IMO the Jays did pretty well given the external market and what chips they had to move.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Doesn't seem like Teoscar is going to be called up just yet.

However, cash, International slot money, a PTBNL or something.. What is the point of keeping Estrada until he is a FA.. They had more leverage a few hrs ago then they will if any of those guys needs to clear waivers.. Package them with others.. or something.. I just dont see the point of anyone other than Smoak being here the rest of the season.. The guy I really wanted to see go forget all others was/is Bautista.. I didn't want to sign him again and think we need to a young guy get some reps.. The other thing is, with Pierce, Morales and Smoak, it forces you to have bad D in the OF.. I want to get younger, faster and better D, which none of those 3 really accomplish.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Doesn't seem like Teoscar is going to be called up just yet. Makes sense to wait until September, or if a trade is made in August. I could actually see Aoki traded later in the year if a contender has an injury and wants a fundamentally sound bench bat with some experience.

Sets the precedent that you're a FO who will make deals for the sake of making deals when it comes to selling at the deadline. You also start down the path of dealing certain guys to certain teams and they just back out last minute. These deals take a lot of time it seems. I just saw that Atkins said there were about 15 deals on the table, they just fell through. Edited July 31, 2017 by Terminator

If they couldn't get a lot at the deadline for him, there's no reason to move him now. Happ's basically in the same situation. 2. Bautista has a no trade clause. You can wish him gone all you want, but if he doesn't want to move, you can't trade him. 3. Smoak is under contract in 2018 (for peanuts) and 2019 under a club option. Unless you're getting a big return, there's no urgency to deal him now. 4. Unlikely anyone even called about Barney. Estrada could have been moved. No doubt....but we don't know the whole story here. Maybe the FO has spoken to him about resigning next year and he expressed a concern about uprooting himself and his family for the remainder of the year. Maybe the offers for him were so underwhelming it made no sense to upset him. This isn't anything to get upset with (given what we expect the return would have been). This FO isn't going to make rash decisions in hast man. You should be happy about that. Edited August 1, 2017 by Brownie19
Johny Verified Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 I just watched tim and sid and someone called and made a comparison to another player who refused to play for there respective team and the topic of aaron Sanchez came up, he has barely played for the jays this year. Do you think this applies to Aaron Sanchez? If I were to trade players I would trade sanchez and possibly even tulowitzki. I thought he would adapt here in Toronto but he has shown some signs of brilliance over the past years but it is clear he is not adapting very well in Toronto. When I look at him everyday its like he is playing with a broken heart, does it hurt that much to play in Toronto? Coming from a team where he was a favourite and then he gets traded for the first time, a lot of players bloom in these situations but he has obviously not!

Tulo is essentially untradeable right now due to his contract but yes we would all be willing to trade him I think. Sanchez I'd move but might be wise to hang on to him for now so he can reestablish some value.
Candy Maldonado Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 It's like the people who call in to Wilner.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2017 Posted July 31, 2017 Tim Beckham would have been a nice addition to this club. I don't think the O's paid a huge price if I'm not mistaken. Would have been a significant upgrade over either Goins or Barney right now and he's the type of guy you can keep around for next season as a third MI to rotate between Tulo & Travis. Has posted a 1.3 WAR so far this season and would be under control until 2021.

This FO isn't going to make rash decisions in hast man. You should be happy about that. I remember Shapiro was on the radio about a month back and he mentioned the possibility of bringing Estrada back next season, and when the interviewer asked about Liriano (possibly coming back next season) Shaps seemed dismissive of it. I think the Jays bringing Estrada back next season is a very real possibility. That doesn't mean they won't trade him, but I think they might value him a bit more than Liriano who they basically paid to go somewhere else so they could get an asset in return.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 So quick recap of today's deadline for the Jays: Roster players Out: Liriano, Smith Roster players In: Aoki Prospects in: OF Teoscar Hernandez, SP Thomas Pannone and 2b Samad Taylor. Seems like a solid winning day on the trade front

Can't even bring up Hernandez because we will have 5 OF's with Aoki on board.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2017 Posted August 1, 2017 you trading pillar or pearce? Honestly, I would eat some salary and ship out Morales. Have Pearce DH. That said, I wouldn't hesitate to trade Pillar.

But tell John Gibbons to bench Pillar and a Bautista in favour of Hernandez. It's not going to happen. They need to make some kind of move in August to clear the deck.
