I would think so, the Jays don't really have a choice. It's not like the 29 other GM's are going to trade a boat load to acquire Smoak for the reasons you just mentioned. We were saying the same thing about Bautista and EE during their first breakout seasons. Probably better just keeping Smoak IMO. As well, he has been consistent throughout the entire season thus far which is a positive. In comparison to other guys like Alonso who really has dropped off in June & July.

my comment relates more to the fact very few posters have mentioned moving smoak

i'll lose some faith in shatkins if they do nothing, there are some guys it makes no sense to keep regardless of the market

I think Smith is a guy they can get value for and should be moved, no questions asked. As for Liriano and Estrada, if you can't get anything for them, the Jays are just better to keep them when you consider how thin the rotation is right now. Plus you can evaluate them more over the last two months in case you bring one of them back on a cheap one-year deal.

I get it

We're sellers this year but hope to compete as early as next year so we don't want to trade guys under control beyond this year unless the return is great

Our potential rental guys have all played like s***

It's a buyers market

We don't want to trade any of our top prospects

They're in an uncomfortable position

They better be doing something today, regardless of return the rebuild needs to start now, needless to say we do indeed have two pretty big building blocks in the system and two young controllable starters on the roster right now . This rebuild can happen fast and I imagine shatkins knows it

The #Astros are on verge of acquiring Francisco Liriano from #Bluejays, but deal not yet complete. @Ken_Rosenthal 1st mentioned in talks

The rebuild has already begun.

Joe Smith is likely the next Toronto pitcher to be moved. Expectation is the Blue Jays will work it as close to 4 pm ET to drive price up.

Source: Joe Smith among relievers #Indians are targeting. Reunion possible.

Royals are a prime candidate to get bent over.

We can only hope. Happ may actually fetch someone decent.

Soler would be fantastic. Not sure the Royals would be willing to lose face on that one though.

It's nice that we have a front office in place that is pragmatic enough to sell pieces at this juncture and has the ingenuity to leverage our financial power to get better returns.

Gotta say this FO seems pretty tight lipped. I really got the impression that nothing was going to happen for us today with the lack of buzz. All the sudden its 2 trades in the books and one possibly yet to be made with KC.

The #Indians finalize deal to acquire reliever Joe Smith from #BlueJays, per @Ken_Rosenthal . The Blue Jays' next move is trading a starter

So we give Smith up for peanuts and a feel good story but we don't do the same with Estrada?

I guess we don't have anyone to replace him for the remainder of the season. Otherwise, why is he still here?

We can still trade him on waivers. If Shatkins didn't like the offers they were getting then they can hold on to him and see if a team develops a more pressing need over the next month.

Some evaluators seem to really like the one prospect in the Smith deal. Also the decision on Estrada is whether to sell low or try to sign him to rebuild value. I have no problem if they've chosen the latter.

Estrada is worth more than peanuts? Perhaps they see more value in keeping him for 3 months for first chance to sign him back?

Just saw on twitter dot com that we gave the Astros cash too. I wonder how much.

Probably enough to cover the difference between Liriano and Aoki's salaries.

Gotta say I like the trades we made today. The only thing I would've liked to see was a run at Gray. Seemed like a good retooling target, especially if the Jays could've used some of those prospects they got today to avoid pillaging their own farm.

yeah, um...the prospects we got today aren't going to help get us Sonny Gray. We'd be looking at giving up Alford + SRF + Zeuch + for Gray I'd imagine.

It was a buyers market to be sure. The package for Gray was not overwhelming to be sure.

Gray isn't an ace though. It was a good trade for both sides. A's got a lot of risk coupled with upside, and traded Gray who's more good than great.
