Guess I do. My point was the Yankees aren't spending money like they used to. Anyone who thinks Cashman is spending $600M on two players in the same off-season is kidding themselves. I fully expect one of the two end up Yankees though.

 

Sure, but why not? You're only going to lose a 1st and 2nd round pick to do it. Guys like Machado and Harper are the guys you actually want to spend big on. They'll still both be young enough that they'll probably provide good to great value for the first half of their deals at minimum, barring catastrophic injury.

Hence the catastrophic injury, which in Stanton case ... pretty much fits the bill or freakish and unlucky.

 

Harper I'd probably be a bit wary of given his injury history, but still... even at 30 million per year he needs to average like 4-5 WAR to be worth it, depending on where the value is of WAR at that point. I think 4-5 WAR is pretty safe for either of those two for the majority of a 10 year deal

Stanton's looked stupid from the beginning. He can never stay healthy, probably would have settled for a much smaller contract but Miami was being dumn.

Exactly my point. Would you give Machado $250-300M with the know knee issues? I sure wouldn't. Harper inconsistency worth the same? Not sure what this catastrophic injury Grant's saying Stanton had, but I''m sure everyone will know soon enough.

Stanton's looked stupid from the beginning. He can never stay healthy, probably would have settled for a much smaller contract but Miami was being dumn.

 

Their goal was to have Stanton for a few years at a cheap cost and then trade him once he starts making making really good money/before the opt out.

 

Now they're stuck with it since he isn't opting out.

People are very likely overreacting to Giolitos struggles. His peripherals are great for his minor league career. This isn't a Mark Appel situation. My primary concern with the lower velocity right now would be that he's hurt and doesn't know it yet...

I don't think so, but Yu Darvish's father is Iranian.

 

I'm sure its a non-issue. But if he ever went to Iran to visit family he would probably be subject to a more rigorous screening process upon re-entering the US.
