Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 So let me get this straight. You would rather pay Bautista 15 million to put up numbers likely somewhere between last year and 2015. (His strikeouts will go up).? If he plays the outfield, he's going to cost you 5-15 Runs? You would rather do that, then pay someone less money, to provide the same value. Oh and you wouldn't want Thor or Aaron Sanchez? Both were sandwich round picks. That being said, I would probably sign Bautista for 1-15, if he plays at least half the game's at DH, with Morales playing first. Are you trolling? I can't tell.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Losing a pick for a one year player, especially when you can't recoup that pick next year due to the CBA change, is pretty significant. Unless Bautista is signing for Nelson Cruz 2014 money on a one year deal (factoring for inflation), which his ego won't allow him to, I'm not that interested. If it's one year + a team option or two, then we're talking.

I'd feel differently if there were other options.

Even with crap defense a 3-4 Win season isn't unrealistic. Funny how no one cared about the pick when talking about Edwin while also giving him $80 Million.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 I can see both sides. Jose could put up a 3 WAR season and help the Jays possibly get to the playoff picture again, so there's definitely value in that. I just think with the value of the pick being what it is that it makes more sense to go for a longer term, but then again, the longer term is less desirable for the team because of his age. That's why tacking on a team option would be the deal breaker for me. If it's a straight one year deal, and the cost is $17mm plus whatever you want to value the comp pick at ($8-10mm), that's a pretty sizable investment for a 36 year old with no D value.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 (edited) Eddie is likeable. And, more importanly, a more reliable bat (Edwin's wRC+ has been better than Bautista's from 2014-2016) And 3-4 years younger Edited January 10, 2017 by G-Snarls

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Still not seeing the necessity to sign him to a one year deal. Edwin was the one to forfeit the draft pick compensation for. Jose on a 1 year + team option works for me.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Nothing to lose by sweating it out. If he was as desirable as he thinks he is then he would have had a taker already. If I am management, I only bring him back on a 1 year under his QO. Gladly take the pick. There are guys who can play better defense and this offense should be fine.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Jeez what if we end up with Trumbo
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Jeez what if we end up with Trumbo I don't think he's half bad if a team would just simply use him as a 1B only. I don't know why teams insist on putting him in the OF. But yeah, I think we need OF more than 1B so no need for him really.

I don't know if either of those things are all that bad.

I don't know if either of those things are all that bad. In the OF he's worth about -10 or -11 runs. At 1B he's about a net zero. I have no clue why teams keep forcing him in to the OF.
guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Jeez what if we end up with Trumbo If the team couldn't find a way to fit in Edwin I really doubt they're gonna shuffle guys around for Trumbo. He's not gonna come cheap either, he could realistically get 35-40 mil+

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Are you referencing Trumbo here, because I think KingKat was discussing pushing Pearce to the OF in favour of Trumbo at 1st? Woops yeah that is confusing but I meant Trumbo. Trumbo is an average 1B but a horrible OF. For what it's worth I think Pearce is slightly below average in the OF and slightly above average at 1B.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted January 10, 2017 Posted January 10, 2017 Pearce is slightly below average in the OF Which I'm guessing is no worse than Moss and certainly no worse than Bautista.
FrozenRopes Verified Member Posted January 11, 2017 Posted January 11, 2017 Which I'm guessing is no worse than Moss and certainly no worse than Bautista. Exactly, there are cheaper options that can play adequate defense. This team should be fine for scoring runs and adding Moss or Trumbo (at first and putting Pearce in the OF) will save money and likely allow for a draft pick coming back.
Inklink Old-Timey Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 http://www.tsn.ca/bautista-back-atop-blue-jays-outfield-list-1.648042 These two desperate parties should just agree to a deal.
Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted January 12, 2017 Posted January 12, 2017 If they do sign him I hope it's more then a one year deal. A one year deal with a team option or something would be nice.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Apparently the Indians are checking in on Jose. Could you imagine?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 Indians OF sucks outside of Brantley and who knows how healthy he is. Since Cleveland already lost their 1st round pick Bautista at $17 Million makes a ton of sense, even more so when you consider the name value. Bautista signing probably sells a lot more tickets there. That being said if Cleveland signs him for $17 Million Shapiro/Atkins are in store for a shitstorm of epic proportions. Losing Edwin/Bautista to a low market team (where they came from) for peanuts while having Zeke and Upton on the roster would piss the fan base off to no end. Meanwhile if you sign Bautista back you probably get a nice boost of ticket sales
