Ray Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 You know what, at this point I'd be pretty content with Jay Bruce assuming we can get him for nothing with the Mets eating a portion of salary, and Bautista on a cheap 1 or 2 year deal. Give me those two plus a LOOGY like Blevins or Logan and this offseason is somewhat salvaged. Just the thought of Bautista and Bruce playing outfield at the same time has me shuddering though. Poor Pillar will have to work overtime.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 If the Mets took on Smoak for Bruce I'd be happy to make that trade. Is Bruce even better than Smoak? Seems like a lateral move for a lot more money.
Governator Community Moderator Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I'd DFA Smoak before trading him for Jay Bruce and just roll with Pompey at this point.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I'd DFA Smoak before trading him for Jay Bruce and just roll with Pompey at this point. Need 2 OFers. Valbeuna is the best lefty bat left on the market. Moving Smoak opens up a spot for him and getting Bruce poorly fills an OF spot. Gotta get the Mets to include a prospect with Bruce
puphood Verified Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Nothing. Winning has never been on the agenda for the current regime only excuse making We tried to sign Edwin We tried to sign Fowler Ect. What you complaining about they signed Floyd.

I'd say he's better, certainly fits the team better. Worth the extra $4.5 Million it would cost all be it Smoak's money is spread over 2 years.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Is Bruce even better than Smoak? Seems like a lateral move for a lot more money. Probably not. Maybe slightly better. But we need an OFer. Pair him with Upton in a platoon. And we might be able to pick up a prospect as a lottery ticket in the deal.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) How much WAR do you guys think we need to get from LF and RF to be a playoff team? 4? 5? Edited January 7, 2017 by Brownie19
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 How much WAR do you guys think we need to get from LF and RF to be a playoff team? 4? 5? 4 to 6 might put us in position?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 That's a pretty tough ask. Right now Pompey is slated for 1 WAR so you have to take that into consideration. There really isn't 6 WAR on the market
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Need to sign Bautista and trade for Puig or someone like him. If no trade then rolling Pompey out there in a platoon with Upton would be my second choice.

There really isn't 6 WAR on the market There are several combinations that can realistically produce ~6 wins. Bautista, Blevins, Valbuena could be one example.

intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Maybe the mods should conduct their own execution.

If no trade then rolling Pompey out there in a platoon with Upton would be my second choice. Even though Bats is a horrible outfielder he's probably the best one still remaining. I wonder what it would take to get Puig. The Dodgers kind of soured on his attitude but I can't see Friedman selling low on him because of attitude problems. If those two don't happen everyone needs to cross their fingers that none of our outfielders get hurt.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I guess we will find out soon enough won't we? Spring training is only a 6-7 weeks away.

rydermike Verified Member Posted January 8, 2017 Posted January 8, 2017 FO wants to give no more than QO and Bautista wants 1 year for more than QO. Maybe they can compromise and do 1 yr/ QO + bonuses. And bonuses can go up to $20 depending on metrics used. Gives Baustista the deal he wants since if he is as good as he believes, he should get the $20 and if Bautista is as good as the FO believes he gets QO, but if he's better than they believe he gets $20.

I don't think so. 1 or 2 millions isn't the difference here. New FO don't want Jose. It's time to move forward

A 1 year deal makes no sense when the value of the pick is factored in, and the FO wants no part of Jose on a multi year contract with his 10/5 rights.

Can't sit on your butt all offseason unwilling to pull the trigger If I had to guess we are ending up empty handed here with a few more minor league deals and a bag full of excuses

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 How many bans do you need before it's permanent? I guess he'll just come back under a different user name and it will be more of a pain in the ass?

Our farm suxxxx as hell. In Shapiro we trust.

If none of the other teams are willing to sign Jose until June than the draft is for all practical purposes already lost and shouldn't factor in the decision making process.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted January 9, 2017 Posted January 9, 2017 This. A 1 year deal makes no sense when the value of the pick is factored in, and the FO wants no part of Jose on a multi year contract with his 10/5 rights. I think a 1-year deal still makes sense if Bautista helps this team win/compete/contend for 2017. Having an extra pick would be really nice, but there are still enough pieces here to make a run in 2017. I am not in favour of a recklessly trying to improve this team for 2017 for the sake of appearances, but I don't think the team should outright dismiss a 1-year deal just because of the pick. If we need that pick so badly, we should probably just blow the whole thing up. That said, entertaining a 1-year deal for Bautista is contingent on the idea that he is healthy and able to bounce back. It continues to seem that the FO does not believe this to be the case, or there's some other negative factor about him that outweighs whatever value he brings to the field.
