Teams interested in free agent slugger Edwin Encarnacion will have to pay up for his services, as the designated hitter is reportedly expecting a five-year, $125-million deal in free agency, according to TSN's Rick Westhead, who spoke with Encarnacion's agent, Paul Kinzer.

Westhead adds Kinzer expects "10 or 11 teams" to have significant interest in Encarnacion, based on preliminary phone calls the agent's received so far.

Encarnacion is coming off another monster season with the Toronto Blue Jays where he led the American League in RBIs with 127. The Dominican slashed .263/.357/.529 in 160 games with Toronto, mashing a career-tying-best 42 home runs.

According to Westhead, Kinzer compares Encarnacion's value to that of Chris Davis, who earned a seven-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles last offseason worth $161 million.

***I thought this was exclusive time for him with his team. This should not be allowed

Fair point that it's just an ask and negotiation has to start somewhere, but I'm not butthurt at all - I was just making a joke. I'm of the opinion this team is better off not giving EE or Jose long term deals (say 4+ years for EE or anything beyond 2 years for Jose). Both are highly unlikely (although I could see Jose taking the QO), so for me it's time for a handshake, a sincere thank you for their service and you take your draft picks and $ and move on.

Didn't mean it to be directed entirely at you but more so in general fans seem to be personally offended when a player seeks a certain number and term, which I think is ridiculous.

Any player is going to seek more money than they are looking to get. If Edwin came out and said I'm looking for 4/80 some team would use that as leverage to sign him quickly at that price.

Yea and no one in this forum smokes weed because it's against the law.

If EE gets $25M a year I'd rather knock on the Cubs door and see if something can be swung for Heyward (salary relief and/or prospect hoard a la Liriano) and try my luck with Bautista at DH or Reddick.

Then roll the dice that Heyward has a big season hitting in AL East parks and opts out of his contract after 2018.

It would be nice if the player's initial request was somewhere in the right stratosphere....5 years @ $25M isn't completely outrageous for EE, but the only reason he gets that is supply/demand and the high number of stupid front offices in baseball. Jose's suggestion of 5 years $150M was laughable.

I'd prefer if the players/agents just shut up and negotiated behind the scenes like they should.

"Kinzer compares Encarnacion's value to that of Chris Davis, who earned a seven-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles last offseason worth $161 million."

The problem with that comparison is that Davis signed the contract entering his age 30 season. EE will be entering his age 34 season. Anything more than a 4 yr/90m (same AAV as Davis got) will be overpaying. With a player who is mid-30s and has a track record of being injury prone, is already a big risk even at 4/90.

I don't think it's fair to put the injury prone label on him. He's really been pretty healthy.

What do those 'just pay him the money' guys think about 5/125.

5th year makes it too much in my eyes. 4 years is just about doable, but even then I'd prefer the last year to have a buyout.

I don't think he'll get that much (he certainly won't from us) so this doesn't necessarily mean he's gone yet.

Cespedes

f*** it

That would be fun as hell. Just get him out of CF and in to RF and I think he'd have a chance to provide solid value on a 100 million dollar deal.

Davis was also coming off posting 7.0 and 5.6 WAR in 2 of his past 3 seasons - both of which are significantly higher than any season EE's ever had.

Is Jon Jay better enough than Zeke or Pompey to warrant consideration for platooning with Upton in LF? Steamer says Jay is quite a bit better than Zeke but Pompey is quite a bit better than Jay.

The way the market is turning I'm beginning to become more inclined on resigning Bautista than EE. Seems like a two year or even three year deal at 15 AAV or so for Bautista is more palatable to me than EE for 4 or 5 years at 20 AAV.

I think he's almost certainly better than Zeke.

Pompey has higher variance. Could be better or worse - by a lot.

I think that we need to do better than Jon Jay if we make an addition.

I think you are probably right but it also depends on the other positions. If we drop big money on Fowler or Cespedes I could live with a platoon partner of Jay's caliber for LF.

I'd gamble on him over Bautista at this point

He'll be able to play RF nicely for sure

I wouldn't mind that either, but our actions with JB and EE lead me to believe that a substantial FA signing isn't in the cards.

Agree. As a DH I think he can be good value. His swing metrics have shown no decline, even swining at less pitches out of the zone than before. The question is do you think the power went down because of the injuries he had or simply age.

3/50 would be a great deal I think.

From @rwesthead: Edwin Encarnacion is seeking a five-year, $125 million deal http://fw.to/4ivMYJm #MLB

Holy s***... it was fun big guy! That ask is absurd.

How about 1 year $17.3M for Jose. Love it. 3 years? pass.

Cespedes in RF - 4 years $100M

Jose at DH - 1 year $17.3M

Coglan or Jay with Upton in LF - cheap platoon.

That's likely an improvement over the EE/Jose/Saunders trio we used last year.

Problem is I don't think Cespedes sings for 100 or JB for 17.

It shouldn't shock anyone that EE's agent would shoot for the moon. You don't start negotations at $90MM and then come down to $75. You start above anyone's number and come down to the highest bidder.

Anyone remember Gavin Floyd? Is he a write off at this point of does the team bring him back on a MiLB deal? I haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere.
