Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 ..........and what players should be on this roster when said playoff run happens? Well the same as this year with some smart additions!
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Fowler, Reddick, Thames, and Eddy. Worth noting: Fowler last-minute bailed on a two-year deal with the Orioles for a one-year shot to do what he just did with the Cubbies.

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Thames? ahahahha His projections look to be quite good, given his improved peripherals. What's wrong with him?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Ok. Season over. Now how do we get the Jays to do what the Cubbies just did for 2017? To think about what the Cubbies did (recently not the entire rebuild which I've stated before i think is about as good a rebuild as I've ever seen). Signed pitching Lackey. Jays don't really need to. Signed 3 OF's, with a focus on defense (Heyward which was a big overpay) and flexibility (Zorilla being the most flexible guy, and Fowler being able to play any of the OF positions). - There are no Heyward's ... which is probably a good thing but flexibility should be the Jays focus. Traded an overpaid Backup for a Reliever and free up some cash. Not the same thing but trading for relievers should happen. Essentially everyone thought that the Cubs were going to use all that prospect equity and fill every hole. They were patient and didn't trade Baez, Soler or Almora like most expected and then traded the really young prospects to fill their only major need at the deadline. Patience is the key here. No need to build the pen in completely in the off season and don't trade off the prospects until you know what you have/need.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Veteran starters and young position players. Follow that model. Too quick to have that in time for 2017 but that should be the end goal.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Veteran starters and young position players. Follow that model. Too quick to have that in time for 2017 but that should be the end goal. Why the dichotomy? How about the model of signing good players and drafting good players and having tons of money to do that. It's so easy!
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 WS over Now s*** can start happening
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 From MLBTR: Nov. 3: Beginning at 9 a.m. ET, teams will have an exclusive five-day negotiation window with their impending free agents Nov. 7: By 5 p.m. ET, teams must submit qualifying offers to their upcoming free agents. The QO is worth $17.2MM, up from $15.8MM last year. This is also the deadline for clubs to exercise their 2017 options over players whose contracts include them. Nov. 8-10: General managers’ meetings in Scottsdale, Ariz. While not as active as December’s Winter Meetings, the groundwork for many trades and signings will take place here, and a few moves figure to be completed. Nov. 8: Free agents become eligible to sign with any team. Nov. 14: Players must choose to accept or reject qualifying offers by 5 p.m. ET. Those who decline will become free agents. Dec. 1: The collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ union expires. Click here for the latest on CBA negotiations. Dec. 2: Deadline for teams to decide whether to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players. The free agent market should expand to some degree on this day, albeit with relatively minor names. Dec. 4-8: Winter Meetings in National Harbor, Md. This period is among the most chaotic of the year for those who follow trades and free agency — often even more so than the days leading up to the non-waiver trade deadline. MLBTR will provide extensive coverage while the Winter Meetings are in effect. The meetings with conclude with the Rule 5 draft on Dec. 8.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Back the truck up for Edwin - got 5 days
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Don't forget the players that have to be added to the 40 man. The fun begins.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Veteran starters and young position players. Follow that model. Too quick to have that in time for 2017 but that should be the end goal. I've often thought this is the way I'd go if I were GMing a baseball team. A lot of teams like to build from the pitching out (I remember Andy McPhail wanted to "grow the arms, buy the bats" when he was Orioles GM) but pitchers are so unpredictable and volatile that it's hard to do that. Hitters seem to have a much more predictable developmental and aging curve. I'd go more the opposite way: focus on developing position players, and fill in the pitching however I can (eg trading excess position players, signing mid-range free agent starters).
Belliss101 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 s*** about to hit the fan. Fowler, Reddick, Thames, Edwin please!
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Stay quiet in FA's, sign EE. What would your OF look like?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 What would your OF look like? Whatever...teams don't need to be set by March 1st. Lots of options will come up. Honestly I'd seek at least 1 OF in trade.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Trade for Jarrod Dyson and soak up that value, dammit.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Anyone else think there's a good chance Cecil gets signed in the next couple days?
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Author Posted November 3, 2016 (edited) Trade for Jarrod Dyson and soak up that value, dammit. I'd love Dyson, but I think KC probably understands how valuable he is. A big part of their team identity is great defensive outfielders supporting mediocre flyball pitchers, so it's hard to see them moving Dyson unless the return is very big. Governator Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Anyone else think there's a good chance Cecil gets signed in the next couple days? I think he wants to stay but I think he'd get paid more if he walked. I hope they find middle ground though this week too.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I wouldn't mind trading a bag of balls for Carlos Ruiz right now if the Dodgers aren't going to take the option. If the extra 4.5 mil let's us get another season out of Martin's knees then he's worth it.

You're probably right but I saw his name as a possible available player and got excited. I've wanted the Jays to get him for two years. Very underrated.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Anyone else think there's a good chance Cecil gets signed in the next couple days? Yes I'd give him 2-3 years
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Yes I'd give him 2-3 years Yes to this!!! But how much do you give him ???
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Yes to this!!! But how much do you give him ??? The smallest amount he will accept Lol
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Cecil just made 3.8M for an up and down season I'd offer 2017 4.5M 2018 5.5M 2019 5.5M option with a 1M buyout
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 He played himself out of Miller money But everyone knows he's very good and he's healthy
