KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 The only thing worrying for me is the kid situation. His girlfriend is that, his girlfriend. Not his wife. So I'm not sure how the money will get paid out or split, I would hope he included her in the will, if not his money would be passed on to his family right? And that could be a situation in of itself. Do they have common law in the US? Also for the HoF discussions at first I wasn't sure I'd want him in there for ceremonial purposes or just basing off his first few years because part of being a HoFer is longetivity, we've see lots of players who started off really well (not as great as him, but still really good) who don't stand the test of time for one reason or another. However I quickly remember the HoF is a joke with a bunch of politicing done by old farts with the same mentality of a Goose Gossage that won't induct Pete Rose or Barry Bonds, so why not do something like that to represent what could of been (and what has been in the last 4 years). Also great PR for Latin-American players as well. Surely his kid counts as "family". Maybe some money would go in a trust.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 I just don't get this mindset. If you think he was one of the greatest young pitchers in the game why wouldn't he deserve to be in the HOF? As BTS said, the Hall of Fame is about recognizing the great players in the game, and he definitely was one. I said he'll be recognized in the HOF in the capacity as the Hurl mentioned, which I'm 100% sure will happen and should. As for him being in the HOF, I just think its tough to justify it and especially since there has never been a similar case as this one. By you saying recognizing great players in the game, wasn't Mark Prior a great player in the game for the time he was healthy? Tim Lincecum? etc. I understand they were different scenarios obviously, but I don't think its as clear cut as it is. Like Grant said, I wouldn't be upset if he was inducted down the road and it definitely would shake up the process in terms of what the HOF voters base their votes on.

Here is Andrew Mccutchen's paystub for an example and he was $10 million that year the paystub is from. http://i.imgur.com/PKHsK0o.jpg Even if 50% of it goes, they are filthy rich. BTS Community Moderator Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Yeah I'm not sure why there's so much concern for their finances. They'll be a lot less rich than they would have been, but this is still a 20-something mother who is, at worst, a millionaire. His kid is still better off financially than 99% of kids.

West Texas Forever Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Nothing nearing THAT stupid. I jumped on my buddies lawn mower once with the blades off but I slipped and fell and knocked the blades on and it ran over my foot and tore my shoe up, that was about the stupidest thing I ever did.

I'm sure he owned a house or nice luxury condo in the Miami area which has to be worth close to a million or more. Plus if he had any sponsorship deals as well. They aren't struggling financially like many people make it seem like they will be.

Seriously that's it? I tried riding my bike down cement stairs with 1 hand. Don't recommend it. I fell out of an apple tree and landed on my nuts on the bottom branch. Don't swing on the top branch. Shot myself with a bbgun. Bad idea. I rode a toboggan through a narrow pathway in a forest with my sister. Hit the last tree, sister almost died. Don't recommend it. Rode homemade ziplines across 3 neighbour's properties to my buddies backyard all summer. Until a kid got his long hair caught in it and was literally stuck half way down. The burning smell of hair, was sickening. Drank beers and then hotboxed a bathroom. Walking back to my room I knocked myself out cold falling in to a door and gave myself a concussion. One scary ass night. I should probably stop talking. I grew up.

He gets paid 6 months of the year (13 of those) and was getting $10MM last year, not 22. Assuming he got 13 of those he took home $5.55+MM after the deductions and is one of the best players in baseball.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Does anyone else think that MLB should waive their 10-year HOF minimum for him? Second best starters ERA- of all time, and best FIP-. No offense, but no. 470 career IP. Plenty of examples already given ITT. Doc Gooden being my fav. Gooden's numbers blow his out of the water in his first two years covering Jose's IP. I know Fernandez had higher K/9 but he also wasn't "burdened" with having to pitch 270 IP in a year. Let's say he doesn't die. Let's say he breaks his leg. He's out for over a year and once he comes back he isn't the same pitcher and has a pretty mediocre career. Do people still call for his induction then? I understand people have sentiment and this story is fresh in everyone's minds and it's particularly tragic. But to get into the HOF you have to have one part talent, one part longevity and one part luck. If baseball re-examines his case then they should go back and re-examine every case where someone was dominant over a very short time frame then for whatever reason didn't last. Gooden, Lincecum and Prior being just three of them.

There's no reason to argue because it's a matter of opinion, but I'll say that for me there's a difference between someone who pitched like an all time great and then had their skills erode and someone who only ever pitched like an all time great, then died. We've only ever seen excellence from Fernandez. That isn't the case for Gooden or Prior or Lincecum. I've always been a big hall guy though.
intentional wok Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Perhaps a display for all players who died young? Fernandez, Adenhart, Lidle, even Ryan Freel. I'd support that. Not sure what the criteria would be, but inclusiveness is much better than exclusiveness in this case.

Gooden didn't actually die - but cocaine essentially killed him. In Prior's case - it was injury. The only time he wasn't excellent was when he was trying to pitch while hurt. Personally - I think you put in a locker room exhibit and tell his story....probably with .gif's of his reaction to the Stanton HR and of his nasty slider just on repeat because that would be awesome.

I think that's appropriate, but I also think thank that Fernandez's accomplishments should be recognized beyond just the fact the he was a player who died. Guys like Adenhart and Lidle were tragic, but they weren't Jose Fernandez.

But is it fair to just assume he would have had a career at least the length of Koufax and let him in anyways? There are certainly no easy answers here but I'd still be firmly in the "no" camp. It's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of coulda shoulda woulda Fame if the cards somehow fell a bit differently. If people wish for him to be in, it has to be purely on the merit of his accomplishments. Dominant performance, but only over 470 IP.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 26, 2016 Posted September 26, 2016 Another thing to add I guess is that this point is moot anyways. If a fairly progressive baseball crowd like the one on here is split on this topic, the BBWAA vote would probably max out at 10% support for him, assuming the minimum service time clause gets waived. That would do more to dishonour him in my view, rather than come up with some alternative remembrance in the HOF as proposed by others here. The good thing is that at least he has been a good player with such a s*** organization. He'll get topic honors and recognition from the Marlins that'll last decades. As opposed to being a Yankee where he'd get lost in the crowd.
