Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Didn't do a very good job as a GM, but a highly thought of baseball guy. Probably a good move.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Can't hurt to have him on board.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Cherington's job will be focused on player development per Davidi.

Wasn't the young core his doing? Maybe that's what they're trying to tap into, especially his history being an advanced scout under Shapiro and Shapiro firing some of the minor league/scouting staff. He made some bonehead FA signings, Sandoval... ugh Edit: Cherington's job will be focused on player development per Davidi. I'm a genius!
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 He was very good and very bad.
BTS Community Moderator Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Ben Cherington trying to shore up Boston's bullpen pre-2012 is one of my favourite sequence of moves of all time: - trades Josh Reddick for Andrew Bailey - trades Jed Lowrie for Mark Melancon - overacts to bad luck in April and demotes Melancon to AAA - trades Melancon for Hanrahan

Though they did win a World Series under his tenure lol.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 Cherington was a trash GM. Maybe in his new role he'll be ok. Friedman did hire AA after all.

Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 I don't know enough about Cherington's background, is he a good development guy? All I know is his moves as a GM were atrocious yet he still won a WS.

From a player development standpoint, they drafted Moncada, Benintendi, & Betts and he refused parting with them in packages for big name veteran players. Have to applaud that, especially in a market like Boston. His FA track record yes is very poor, can't argue that. Though Porcello has blossomed this season and H-Ram is having a pretty decent season himself. Some of the trades he has made which involved solid controllable position players for BP arms were pretty disgusting. Otherwise, he's probably a good head in the room to bounce ideas off of.

Didn't Moncada cost them like $62M? It's more like a FA than a draft...

I'd say his FA track record was mixed. Sandoval and Ramirez aren't great, and Castillo is a bust. But prior to their WS title he signed Ross, Uehara, Victorino, Napoli, Dempster, Gomes etc... to smart short term deals and they made all the difference. Not sure why he got away from that type of move in favour of the splashy high-risk signing, especially after having so much success with the smaller deal.

His free agent record isn't that bad. It really depends on what year you're looking at. The 2012-2013 featured a lot of decent low to medium risk signings that worked out well. Mike Napoli 3.9 fWAR David Ross 0.8 fWAR (in only 36 games) Shane Victorino 5.9 fWAR Stephen Drew 3.4 fWAR Koji Uehara 3.1 fWAR He also got a 26 million two year extension on Ortiz good, signed Ryan Dempster and Jonny Gomes (meh) and did the aforementioned Hanrahan trade (bad). Overall, a very good off-season. Seems like he got pressured into making higher risk moves later on.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2016 Posted September 14, 2016 He's not going to be the GM here so his track record with FA contracts (as mixed as it is) doesn't really matter. It will ultimately be Atkins who makes the call with Shapiro's input (or vice versa). The Jays badly need to improve their player development structure, so if Cherington can help with that, then that's great.

I agree that we could always use improvement, but we have been well above average on the player development side of things. We've plundered our prospect pool a number of times and it's still 10-15 in the league, which is rather impressive.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Cherington is an excellent guy to have aboard and those bashing this move are probably idiots. The guy was GM of the Red Sox- an organization with excellent scouting, player development, marketing, etc. He definitely picked up plenty of knowledge there and can help bring that to the Jays. It's a great move.

I'd the player development model was really good they wouldn't be making so many changes to it...

A Boston GM is very tough to judge as there is supposedly a lot of ownership interference.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 I'd the player development model was really good they wouldn't be making so many changes to it... Teams in first place still trade for better players. Your argument is garbage and you know it.

How many good everyday players has our MiLB system developed in the past 5 years?

How many good everyday players has our MiLB system developed in the past 5 years? Umm... Uhhh... Kevin Pillar? That's about it. You could also argue Travis d'Arnaud was developed by us. Actually now that I think about it, there's d'Arnaud, Yan Gomes, Ryan Schimpf, and then Marisnick and Hechavarria (I know they kinda suck). The problem is that AA kept trading them all away.

Kind of hard to credit the team for developing players that they didn't actually think were good.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Kind of hard to credit the team for developing players that they didn't actually think were good. I'm still mad that Gomes didn't get a fair shot at catching, especially when Arencibia was the starting catcher. Also why the f*** didn't we ever give Schimpf a shot? And letting Hech ride the bench while Vizquel got regular starts... There were some really terrible decisions during AAs tenure.
