How do you knew that they didn't think they were good? That would mean that AA thought Synder sucked. He just loved trading boatloads of prospects, that was his biggest flaw imo. I don't think he believed in developing he just believed in drafting players that looked good (high risk high ceiling) and traded them while they were in high A/AA ball before they face real competition or their arms blew out. I'm convinced that's why he piggybacked starts, doing that royally f***ed us with Sanchez. I actually can't wait until the next few drafts where we can actually draft with the mindset of development and see youth players come up.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Nope. Alright then. I don't think it's fair to assume that front offices only trade prospects that they don't think are good. I also think 'player development' includes drafting and developing in the minor leagues. If he turns into a big league player on any team then the player development was probably pretty successful.

Schimpf was literally let go for nothing, and Gomes was traded as the 2nd piece in a deal for Esmil Rogers. I don't even know how to respond to what you've posted.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 15, 2016 Posted September 15, 2016 Hiring an ex-GM into a non-GM role is almost always a huge win. I care very little about how good Cherington was as Boston's GM.

Yeah and AA let a bunch of good talent go to the Astros for Happ and an even better group go to the Marlins for what should have been a salary dump. AA had lots of moronic trades that were really saved by his last year of acquiring Travis, Donaldson, Tulo and Price. My point is exactly like what you said -- instead of developing CY young talent he traded for it. Instead of developing cheap talent to be our core he rushed to trade instead for "now" solutions. It's not that they didn't believe in the players -- I'd say more it's their philosophy was to treat prospects more of currency than actual potential solutions. How many players in general are homegrown from under AA are on the roster? I think we've had more under JPR. You have Sanchez, Stroman, Pompey, Loup, Barnes, Dermondy, Osuna, Shultz? Only this from all his years here? I think we'll see prospects being kept more here than we saw when AA was in charge

He's coming here to have a big influence in player development, not sign free agents. And considering his track record in that area, this looks like an excellent hire.

Bingo... plus he's worked with Shapiro in the past, it's a good move.
