closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Sorry but trading Bautista would be one of, if not the stupidest thing the franchise has ever done. Not gonna happen. Imagine all of the consternation from the casual fan after the Jays failed to make the playoffs with a couple of prospects to show for it.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Trading a declining and impending free agent who just happens to be a fan favorite and a really good player for a decent return is not the stupidest thing the franchise could do. Trading a star entering his prime for spare parts (Donaldson from Oakland) is the dumbest thing we could do. That's a really terrible argument. The team is in a playoff race and is going to trade one of their best players for a prospect, or a lesser player who is controlled for longer? You do realize the return on 2 months of a player isn't that spectacular, right? There's a difference between trading Bautista a few months ago or in the offseason vs. now, so hopefully you realize that.

reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Imagine all of the consternation from the casual fan after the Jays failed to make the playoffs with a couple of prospects to show for it. It's not even just dumb from a PR standpoint, it's also dumb from a baseball standpoint. Some people are overestimating what they could get for 2 months of a 35 year old RF who is basically a DH. The return is likely pretty minimal that it would be stupid to trade him when the team has a real shot at a deep playoff run.
Lil Looper Verified Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 If you trade bautista and the team falters you would NEVER here it enough from the causals. They still think he is babe ruth out there. You simply cannot trade him in a playoff run for no other reason but to make sure the causals dont turn on you. You could get harper back and then fan base would still be up in arms
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 I wouldn't be surprised if 10 teams have inquired about Bautista And Stroman And Cecil Etc... This is meaningless
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Bautista is the best thing to happen to this franchsie since 1993.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Author Posted July 28, 2016 Trade Jose after that bat flip?
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 It's not even just dumb from a PR standpoint, it's also dumb from a baseball standpoint. Bautista would probably return two top 100 prospects if he was dealt.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 The only way I see him getting dealt is if something happened in the clubhouse. I'm purely speculating but I have a feeling that may have happened. Perhaps he didn't take too kindly of being told he would DH a lot down the strech. The fact that he didn't go to First Base the other night was extremely bizarre. Gibbons excuse post game didn't really add up. Suggesting he didn't want to risk an injury. I love Bautista but if you can get more than just a compensation pick value in return you look at it. That doesn't take us out of the conversation for another bat either. Someone like Beltran who might be more willing to DH. I don't think it's going too happen but things like this usually don't come out unless there is smoke. Edwin is probably the one they would prefer to keep long term. Makes sense. No ego. Can sign for cheaper, and is younger. I agree. I think something happened with Bautista and management regarding using him more at DH and he didn't like it. The trade for Upton even further ignited his displeasure. The move yesterday by losing our DH instead of putting Bautista at 1B and Upton in RF is solely based on Gibby not wanting to put Bautista in a bad place.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Yes. Trading your franchise player in the middle of a playoffs run would be insane. Jesse Barfield for Al Lieter. The precedent has been set by this team's greatest GM. Though 1989 was the year the Jays started off miserably before stealing the pennant at the end of the season so I'm not sure if that trade was considered to be during the middle of a "playoffs run". The team's performance while Bautista was injured and the acquisition for someone with a pulse who casuals might remember being pretty good for a division rival a few years ago certainly increases the possibility of him being traded without Armageddon reigning down on the Jays' FO.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Of course he would. And you still don't do it. Not sure where that was implied but k

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 This is like all the people who wanted a playoff bound Raptors team to tank for a higher draft position (then complain that Toronto sports teams suck). If we were out of the race, then of course you try to trade him if he agrees. To do it with where we are in the standing would be beyond stupid.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Take the emotion out of it. Trading Bautista now is a smart move. No it doesn't. Holy. You're only going to be getting farm players now we're in a division race This is what 22 years of no postseason does to people, always thinking about how to replenish the farm. You don't trade one of your biggest bats in a division race
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Debatable. Smart move for the future, but probably lowers our chances of winning THIS season. Are we so sure about this? Bautista 0.9 WAR so far this year, projects 1.1 to 1.5 WAR the rest of the way; negative WAR on the field. Upton 1.5 WAR so far this year, projects 0.1 to 0.5 WAR the rest of the way; more or less neutral on the field. If the Jays can trade him for someone who might get 0.5 WAR the rest of the way, and/or use Upton effectively for platoon splits and defensive opportunities or bank on him continuing his productive 2016 at the plate, the Jays could mitigate the loss of the projected 1 WAR. EDIT: This also assumes that Bautista has the team by the balls and Gibbons doesn't have the balls to get Bautista off of the field so that he continues to provide below replacement defense out in right in the non-trade scenario.

What if we could get an impact starter or someone like Giolito to pitch when Sanchez goes to the pen. Isn't that making us better now?

Getting a prospect like Giolito for 2 months of Bautista is even more far-fetched than him waiving his NTC.

BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted July 28, 2016 Posted July 28, 2016 Teams are just tire kicking. Part of the process. I have no doubt Shapiro would try and get Jose to waive NTC if he thought it was the right move for the right haul now. But I see no scenario where that happens. I fully expect Jose to get hot; play lousy RF and do a lot to help us win this Division this year. Looking forward to it.
