It's true, and yes a lot of fans thinks Jays are a team of douchebags because of him.

That's cause baseball fans are mainly crusty old white guys who hates anyone with personality.

Are we talking "face of the franchise" or just your favourite players? Without getting into the rest, there's no argument to be made for putting guys like Pillar and Travis in that conversation.

I don't think being 4th or 5th is "in" the conversation, but imo they are higher up that Bautista. They are young players that anyone can relate to, work hard, gives it their all, dont act like 2 year Olds and are the future/now of the team.

Say what?

Maybe two prospects in the 50-100 range. Nobody is giving up an A prospect, whatever you define that as, for 2 months of Bautista. Price (unquestionably worth more than Bautista) basically took only Norris to get. Obviously markets change every year but you'd be pretty shortsighted to give up any top prospect for him.

Would two prospects in the 50-100 range be two top 100 prospects or no?

I think most consider him a douchebag for his antics with the umpires. That isn't personality, it's a lack of emotional intelligence and self control.

how the f*** does that make the team better?

In 12 games Turner is worth .4 WAR while is 68 games Bautista has been worth .8. I know it's a SSS but if they would include either Giolito or Turner in a trade you really have to think about it

Lol @ this topic. Even suggesting a trade would make our front office look like a bunch of tools. You can't treat one of the greatest players in franchise history like that. It'll severely damage our relationships with other players moving forward as well (I.e. Negotiating with JD for a long term deal). Star players get star treatment. That's life. If you want to completely torpedo our clubhouse morale... then ask him to waive his 10/5 rights.

But then again the human aspect of things is completely irrelevant right? These guys are robots and don't have emotions/loyalties. Ridiculous.

Haven't you heard? Team chemistry doesn't matter.

Yeah the team really took a nose dive when Bautista went down.

And don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating in trading Bautista but if it's for the right player you have to do it. And no, I don't think it will happen

I totally disagree. There's a substantial gap between being a scrappy fan favourite and a true face of the franchise. Bautista has been that guy for several years now. IMO the only conversation to be had is whether that torch has been passed from Bautista to Donaldson this season.

Um...nobody argues with umpires like Jose.

Umpires have been s***** since the Babe was around. Jose looks like a baby when he complains and I think that's the primary reason people think he's a douche.

There are many people on the board who believe you amass enough offseason projected WAR and you'll be fine.

I agree with your premise that if the return happened to be good enough you would do it. But the Nationals aren't giving up two of their premium prospects for two months of him and he's not waiving his NTC, so it's a moot point.

Exactly

You just add and subtract projected WAR in order to win 89 games, under budget. People don't matter.

lol plenty of players argue with umpires like Jose. Managers too. Go on youtube and see for yourself.

Serious post:

Teammates like Bautista

He has insane OBP skills and still has power

Used effectively (this is on Gibbons) he's very useful this season. And (for now) he's as much the face of the franchise as anyone. That actually DOES mean something.

It's so moot. People want to trade him because he's not as good anymore but that's also why you're unlikely to get anything of value back. You can't pine for him to be traded because of how bad he is in 2016 while expecting a Bautista 2014 return. ECJF is right. Whatever return you would get isn't even close to justifying the pushback.

Players don't have loyalty except to the club who writes them the biggest check and offers them the best chance, in their own opinion, to win.

No player owes it to the club to resign at a discount, and no club owes players anything other than the money thye agreed to pay them.

Should Bautista be approached about waiving his no trade clause because the Jays were offered a deal they would lunatics to turn down... that's part of business.

He would be free to feel insulted and maybe would impact clubhouse chemistry, but that's why the FO has their jobs, they have to judge whether that's worth the risk.

If Washington offered Giolito and Turner, Bautista would be in the office having a conversation before the phone disconnected.

I mean sure that's true but you know full well that you're only dealing with a pie in the sky scenario. Any actual Bautista return wouldn't be worth the hassle.

Are you trying to set me up for a joke? Am I supposed to tell you that I should probably, like really seriously, consider muting you?

Exactly. And like someone mentioned, maybe they told Jose he'll be DHing for most of the season and he's pissed about it. In Washington he'd be playing field everyday. His value will go down if he's DHing the rest of the way vs everyday outfielder.

His value went down on his own when he botched that catch the other night at almost cost the Jays the game.

Very likely yes, just stating there are no absolutes.

There are many fans who would atually want Jose to be resigned at 5/150 too just because of the very same optics and fuzzy feelings that bat flip HR gave them, yet retaining him at that number would be completely stupid.

Trading him now for anything less than a massive overpay would be equally as stupid.

How crazy would it be if we traded Bautista now to the Nationals, then we met the Nationals in the World Series!!!!

That'd be NUTS!!!
