CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 29, 2016 Posted July 29, 2016 Atleast I'm consistent unlike most other posters on here whose opinions change with the wind. I think there's a fine line between "consistent" and "stubborn". Certainly there are benefits and costs associated with any transaction, including the idea of trading Jose Bautista. I think the key is to identify if/when the benefits of trading him (or approaching him about the possibility of being traded) outweigh the benefits of keeping him. While I'm sure there's a circumstance where the net positive benefit of trying to trade him exists (i.e., x games out with y teams in front of us), I just don't see how that's now, when: - we're in a playoff position - we're within striking distance of the division - we're filling the stadium - the team chemistry seems to be in a good state I can think of many of Blue Jays teams in the past 20 years who would have benefited greatly from your desired approach of selling at the deadline, in circumstances much less favourable than what this current team is facing. Having a "consistent" approach in an environment where so many inconsistencies and variables exist shouldn't necessarily be considered a feather in your cap, in my opinion.

Where a team is on the win curve has to taken into account with any trade, especially one of Jose's caliber. If the Jays were looking at a 70 win season, he'd be gone faster than a fart in the wind, along with edwin, saunders and every other pending FA. But when you're in a playoff spot with a better than decent shot at a 2nd straight division title, that's a completely differnet scenario about decisions like trading a marquee talent just because he's old and likely not being resigned for next season.

Having an open mind and adapting to new information are good qualities to have in order to advance in the world. There are many people who still use RBI, batting average and pitcher wins as a means to evaluate the performance of players, and wholeheartedly refuse to acknowledge the existence and value that advanced statistics provide.

Politics and the BJMB: the only two areas where changing your opinion in the face of new evidence is considered something to be ashamed of.
