Until 1995 nothing other than an ALCS was played. For a long time until '93 there were two divisions per league, East and West, and the division winners went directly to their respective CS and those winners went on to the WS ('94 was the obvious exception). Way more exclusive and preferable IMO, but I acknowledge that the current setup allows for way more teams to be competitive for longer. It was harder to make the playoffs before, but easier to go all the way. Now, it's easier to make but you have more opportunities to f*** up your run along the way, especially if you're a WC team.

Yeah I know that, I'm just saying we've always been a step away from the world series or at the world series in every run

Thought about posting it last night, but I didn't want to be run off the forum.

It wouldn't be the first time

On that note, I really hope we don't see playoff expansion anytime soon (but I suspect we well). I think the current format is close to perfect. Being like the NHL/NBA where 50-55% of teas make the playoffs would really hurt my interest in baseball. 0.500 teams getting hot for a month and winning the WS is not interesting.

I can live with this setup, but I think the divisions need some re-aligning. I hate scenarios like last year's when two of the top win squads (98 and 97) had to fight in a one-game playoff while the (admittedly good, but bad early on) Mets get a division title with like 91 wins. I really like the idea of just having an American League and National League and then you can literally say the top x number of teams (4?) get postseason berths without any second-guessing about who actually played in a strong enough division to boast a big win record. Travel would be a lot more rigorous too with lots more cross country trips. Interleague would be tough to swing for common opponents though...

TBH I'd like to look at a schedule and it not have a ~50% chance of being TB, Baltimore, NY, or Boston on a given day. I want to see everyone else a lot more.

Even I would have poisoned you at the inevitable BJMB meet up.

Just wanted to point out this little cool fact I saw, the Jays have made the postseason 6 previous times (85, 89, 91, 92, 93, 15) and during these 6 times:

85: Lost to KC in ALCS, KC won the WS

89: Lost to OAK in ALCS, OAK won the WS

91: Lost to MIN in ALCS, MIN won the WS

92: Won the WS

93: Won the WS

15: Lost to KC in ALCS, KC won the WS

So, not only have we always reached at least the ALCS, the winner of the ALCS matchup of us vs. other AL team wins the World Series lol. So Jays/Indians lock for 2016 WS?

That's cool .....I did not know that

I like the concept but I don't think the amount of travel is really feasible. Baseball isn't hockey, they play every day for 6 months and I think more travel would be harder on some players, jet lag alone would be torture. Not to mention, divisions create better rivalries.

I don't think we will. It works in NHL/NBA because the best teams always win but MLB obviously is a lot different in that an average team can get lucky and win for a couple of weeks.

Just got a notification from the Score that Gibbons will be back in 2017 as confirmed by Shapiro.

The day just keeps getting better.

Yeah. I noticed that myself last year, after KC won the WS. All the times the Jays have made the playoffs, they've either won it themselves or been eliminated by the team that went on to win the world series.

Which means Cleveland has to win now for the streak to continue..

It's been done. They used to have a balanced schedule, even despite having divisions. I know the players didn't like it.

I wasn't overly pissed off with the loss but this terrible news makes me angry. Lets hope he is on an extremely short leash

So what's everyone's opinion of putting up a 2016 Wild Card banner at home opener next year?

Seems like a lot of people tend to think it's kind of like celebrating a participation award. I think that's a bit silly considering the Jays put up 89 wins in the league's toughest division, won the Wild Card game, and then outlasted two division winners in the postseason (including sweeping #1 seed). Last year's Cubs and Pirates were "Wild Card" teams despite having the second and third best records in MLB, respectively, while playing in the same division as the 100-win Cardinals.

Postseason play deserves commemorating. It's a part of history and a genuine accomplishment in MLB (more so than other major sporting leagues). If the playoffs ever expand to the absurd size of the NBA or NHL's then I can see the argument against non-Division banners, but I still think an MLB Wild Card is worth something. Is it right to look back on the Wild Card and ALDS walk-offs in a decade and not even have a road grey-coloured banner for official bling?

(On that note, do the O's deserve a banner/flag? Do the Yankees have one from their loss to the Astros last year? Given the Yankees' rich history I don't think skipping a flag is a big deal, but no other team has such a successful pedigree that they'd be fine skipping the bling.)

I say put the banner up.

Put the banner up but don't make a fuss about it. Raptors put up a banner this year and did it quietly I would prefer that.

The colts got ridiculed and laughed off the planet for putting up an "AFC Finalist" banner, a WC banner would be even worse lol.

One more thing.

We traded away a really good prospect for Scott

Feldman. Who did nothing to help this team. and

now he walks away. And Houston gets a very good prospect

for free. So we now who won this trade and

it wasn't Toronto.

It's almost as bad a trade as the Tom Kurvers one was

with New Jersey.

Feldman came in and pitched incredible in that 12-6 come back win in that rain delayed game at Yankee Stadium.

Cant win every trade.. I feel like we fleeced the Pirates, two top 10 prospects and Liriano for Hutch.

I have to agree with John Gibbons.

This team needs more speed.

Which is why I really didn't understand the

Ben Revere trade. The guy could possible have helped the blue jays

this year. Stealing bases and being a good lead off batter.

Better then anyone we had. Outside of maybe Devon Travis.

Who can really hit. But he has more power.

Revere was the 12th worst offensive player in major league baseball last year. Stick to prospects.

I'd welcome back Revere on a minor league deal.
