Well if the team is unwilling to put Tulo or another non-traditional option in the lead off spot then they have created a hole. I get your complaint, though, that Shi of all people shouldn't be falling into that narrow mindset. Normally I like Shi a lot.

Travis when he returns, I see him sliding into the lead off spot. The team was willing to put Donaldsom in a non-traditional spot...not sure why they won't do that again.....I think they moved Tulo out of it due to his struggles adjusting to a new team and league

This. I love the idea of Travis leading off.

I like this deal. I was a fan of Revere. Ill forever remember him for his play and post game commentary. I thought he was a pretty funny guy.

But mostly I'll remember him as the Jay who got royally f***ed on a key 2-1 pitch from Davis with Pompey on 3B in Game 6 of the ALCS, and then beat the living hell out of a garbage can with a bat.

We needed help in the pen and this quality helps backfill the loss of the Aussie.

No concerns about the leadoff spot. Travis or Tulo...whatever. Way too much is made of that "issue".

Time for Pompey to step up.

If the team is going to give the most PAs to someone who isn't the elite four, Travis is a pretty good option as long as he can maintain a reasonable amount of the production from his half-year of big league experience.

The bullpen gives a much better feeling now. Samchez-Cecil-Osuna-Storen gives a warm feeling late in games. Loup-Chavez-Scultz make up the rest of it.

Front end Stroman-Dickey-Happ-Hutch-Estrada is not bad either and we have depth

I think the better argument is that Storen is a badly needed bullpen upgrade, and Pompey's defense can almost certainly provide the same kind of WAR that Revere did, even if the bat lags behind.
it doesn't lag behind its nothing at this point but I'll take it. now trade Dickey and his caddy.

No excuses to not let Osuna at least compete for the rotation now.

I like the deal, I would stretch both Osuna and Sanchez out in spring training. Starting Osuna in the minors as a starter would not be the worst option either.

There's still the matter of lack of mileage on the arm. You can agree or not with the validity of that concern but it's definitely an excuse not put him in the rotation mix.

And of course Shi comes on and says the Jays just created a massive hole in the lead off spot....SN reporters are the worst.

Shi is right.

Trade Travis, Greene, Harris, Ureña and Vladimir Jr for Dre Gordon, a real leadoff guy.

I literally just listened to Shi's interview. His exact words were it creates a bit of a hole. I think you're guilty of shoddy reporting..lol

Upton long term, Bautista 1B and Edwin to Boston 2017

I've been thinking this for a while. And of course we get the draft pick. Or, or, we trade EE to Boston right now (gasp!) and semi-raid their farm.

Legit 200 IP guy: RA Dickey

Unable to throw +180 IP: Estrada, Happ, Stroman, Chavez, Hutchison

BTW Marcell Ozuna is overrated. Just wait and see

I love the fact that we, The Blue Jays message board, has a built in International Scout for inside knowledge on all the

talent south of the US border!!

Keep up the great work Ang!!

the way this board undervalues ben revere is very disheartening.

the way this board overvalues relievers is alarming.

we just traded a rock solid 2 WAR position player with more control at less cost for a 1 WAR reliever. now our OF depth will be supremely tested. jose is what he is (aging elite bat with poor defense). i am skeptical about Pillar's offense due to his 'approach'. hes my favorite jay right now but hes not beyond reproach. over time hes more likely to get exposed than continue his smoke and mirrors act on offense unless he makes a real adjustment. it wont matter as much if hes playing stellar defense but i liked our OF when our biggest question mark was Pillar's bat. now we gotta worry about his bat, saunders knee, colabello's 'glove', and pompeys everything. a lot of question marks just got magnified in our OF. i am more comfortable piecing the bullpen together than the OF.

I'd hate to break it to you: It doesn't matter how this board values any player......the board don't make the trades!

Really? I thought Shapiro called all of you guys for approval before pulling the trigger...

Guess it's just me then.

People forget that Revere struck out with no one out when all he had to do was make contact

f*** him and his contact making skills. When it came right down to it he struck out. Revere is really a nothing player. The minute his speed depriciates a bit he will be Rajai Davis.

This was a great move for a great late inning reliever which we desperately needed

Good deal for the Jays. We need bullpen depth more than anything--we have enough OFs in the MLB and in the minors, so Revere was a luxury. Plus, the Nats were desperate after Span left for the Giants, and they didn't want to pay for Fowler (who's still unsigned).

Warning--he doesn't walk, and his poor defense(no arm) will be exposed in Washington in that ballpark. I mean, he wasn't that great defensively in Toronto (but an upgrade over Collabello/Valencia in LF). Plus, the Jays have Roemon Fields and Dwight Smith Jr. in AAA, who have similar skills to Revere--hopefully with more walks. Plus we have Pompey and Saunders around, with Lake and Carrera still options as well.

Plus, we needed a good setup man/closer more than anything, so that Sanchez or Osuna can be moved to the rotation, as they both profile as starters anyway.

The trade works because of team need.

Pompey is probably at least as good as Revere. And despite rumours to the contrary, Michael Saunders is still literally alive (he might not be kicking, though).

Storen completes the back end of the bullpen well. Now there are two good RHP in him and Osuna and two good LHP in Cecil and Loup. It bumps someone like Biagini/Schultz/Tepera who are probably replacement level. It also increases the ability to maybe stretch out Sanchez or Osuna, which may or may not be good.

Since Washington matched salaries, arguably the teams gets a bit better without increasing payroll.

Revere is an interesting case study in past WAR vs. expected WAR though. He has been a league average OF consistently and he has two years of control left. In theory, he should be worth more than 1 year of Storen. But WAR is a descriptive stat, not a predictive one. There are legitimate concerns that Revere's skill set has changed a bit since the past descriptive results. He may be more of a poor LF now defensively than a decent CF. He also doesn't have a "robust" skill-set in any sense of the word, having maxed out his physical tools in the past to only achieve ~2 win results.

Obviously Toronto doesn't see Revere as a rock solid 2 win LF going forward.

It will be interesting to see how he does in the next two years. The Nori Aoki situation from this winter kind of tells us that teams don't value corner outfielders like this (no pop, mediocre D) very much.

Excited to add some stability to the back end of the pen. Would love to see a new LF addition now, but seems like they're married to Saunders/Pompey.
