ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Not sure why everyone is so excited about this trade. We just traded a 2-WAR player for a 1-WAR player, while taking on higher salary, and having only one year of control instead of two. Better hope Pompey works out this year, or this trade is gonna be looking really bad, when we start trotting Colabello out in left field again next year. I think people look at where the team's needs are. However, it's interesting that so many hated the Lind for Estrada trade last year even though team got a SP and $aved in the process. People also loved trading 1 year of Happ for 2 years of Saunders, of course, Saunders projected better than Revere and made le$$.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Obviously if it comes down to it, Shapiro is not going to allow Colabello to be the regular LF. AA is gone, remember? He did allow Swisher to make some starts out there the previous two years. Swisher wasn't as bad as Colabello in the OF (probably because of experience), but he wasn't exactly great either.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I am not a Sanchez fan but with this front office I am willing to give him a shot. They aren't going to look at ERA and conclude that he is doing fine like AA did. They have a history in Cleveland of helping pitchers and maybe they'll actually try to make Sanchez a better pitcher rather than accept him for who he is like the old regime did. Plus, it's not like he is a lights out reliever either. He has flaws in the pen as well (lack of K's, trouble against lefties).

I don't really understand why people keep talking about a hole being filled, without mentioning that one of a similar size was opened up. Another shoe has to drop before this can be called a positive, but until that happens they've subtracted 1-2 outfield wins and added them to the pen. That's fine, but the team isn't better. Yet. I guess it's likely that Storen at 1/8 was better than the free agent relief market, and they think they can add an OF more efficiently than they would have been able to add a reliever. I hope this is the case.

John Lott @LottOnBaseball 1m1 minute ago Drew Storen: Whether I close or set up, “it’s something for me that’s not all that important.” #BlueJays This is actually refreshing. At least we required a reliever who won't have a hissy fit if he isn't seeing save situations.

Have Osuna focus on a rotation spot and if he falls short he gets one of the set up roles. Having Osuna, Cecil, and Storen finishing games should give us all quite a bit of confidence.

Over the past 2 years, he is 5th in ERA behind Davis, Betances, Giles, and O'Day with a 1.67 mark. Opponents have hit a paltry .149 against him, beaten only by Wade Davis. He has walked only 2.43/9 and is also top 5 in groundballs at 66.7%. I support using him as a starter, but get your facts straight.

If the Jays let any of the young guys close, then their arb salaries will go up as a result of collecting saves. They'll only have Osuna or one of the others close if they're desperate.
closetjaysfan Verified Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 This is exactly what we needed: surplus in the outfield with Bautista, Pillar, Pompey, Saunders, Revere... Colabello (please shoot me in the f***ing face if that happens again). For a above average bullpen piece.

RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I don't dislike the Osuna fighting for a rotation spot assuming he stretches out the mlb not in AAA Not all WAR is the same. It's easier to replace 2 WAR in LF then it is to find a reliever that is projected at 1 WAR. Pompey/Saunders will replace Revere and nothing will be lost whole we likely upgraded a replacement level reliever with Storen
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 He was up there to make contact. That is his specialty. He has got to have enough sense Mind you in a key bat in game 5 against Rangers he also hit a very weak grounder and didn't get the run home. Followed by a crucial mistake of not following the ball on the Donaldson loope misplay. Not to glorify clutch at bats but his so called contact skills are over rated. He is a below average defender who significantly relies on a high babip (30 points higher than avg). He isn't that you either. Pompey > Revere Put Pompey full time in LF he probably out WARs Revere. Wow.
King Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 If Aaron Sanchez isn't a lights out reliever, then I don't know who is. Josh Collmenter! 1.91 ERA over the past two season as a reliever with the same amount of IP as Sanchez.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I'm pretty high on Pompey so I'm not that worried about a hole in LF.

He had a 1.39 K/BB over 80 IP last year which is pretty terrible regardless of his GB rate, you're a dumbass.

That's the whole point of WAR, it adjusts for positional strengths. Joe Blanton was better and projects to be better than Storen if you want that kind of counterargument.

If the facts are centered around ERA and opponents BA, then I don't want to get them straight. He's a good reliever. If you think he's lights out or a late inning guy, at least based on his current performance, then we will just agree to disagree. I don't trust him with runners on base (too much contact), or to get lefties out consistently. Those things are kind of important.
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 the way this board undervalues ben revere is very disheartening. the way this board overvalues relievers is alarming. we just traded a rock solid 2 WAR position player with more control at less cost for a 1 WAR reliever. now our OF depth will be supremely tested. jose is what he is (aging elite bat with poor defense). i am skeptical about Pillar's offense due to his 'approach'. hes my favorite jay right now but hes not beyond reproach. over time hes more likely to get exposed than continue his smoke and mirrors act on offense unless he makes a real adjustment. it wont matter as much if hes playing stellar defense but i liked our OF when our biggest question mark was Pillar's bat. now we gotta worry about his bat, saunders knee, colabello's 'glove', and pompeys everything. a lot of question marks just got magnified in our OF. i am more comfortable piecing the bullpen together than the OF. You realize Pompey, as bad as he has been, has a higher career OPS than Revere, right? And he's a better defender? Storen for Revere is a solid move that just makes sense on all levels.

He hasn't been the same pitcher as a starter, so don't cherry pick your information to suit your argument. As a reliever he's been absolutely dominant. There's no getting around that fact. burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 I see a lot of people assuming Pompey will start. I think the blue jays see Saunders as the starting LF and Pompey as 4th OF/AAA/

Everyone else on that leader board is substantially closer to league average so once that happens to Sanchez he's going to be mediocre at best without some serious improvements in his skill.
