L54 Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 Steamer has adjusted Zimmermann's projection post-signing: 4.07 FIP and 2.5 fWAR in 200 IP, with his K-rate dropping to 6.67/9. Our resident accountant will be pleased.

Praxis Verified Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 My first reaction after hearing about this signing was disappointment, anger and some resentment. Emotionally I felt that we had hired a GM/President with a small market mentality making second rate moves that would be welcomed by parsiminious owners who had let down the fans again. After calming down and giving it some thought however, I'm really pretty pleased with the signing. It has cost us nothing but money in compensation, it has made me feel a bit better about the Michael Saunders fiasco and most importantly Happ can be a significant part of a starting lineup that everyone was worried about when the season ended. We have gone from Stroman and Dickey to who-the-bloody-hell-knows, to Stroman, Dickey, Happ and Estrada and who-the-bloody-hell-knows with some flexibility remaining on the payroll. That's good business by anybody's standards.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 30, 2015 Posted November 30, 2015 Wasn't he at 2.8 fWAR pre-trade? A half-win projected drop from 2015 is pretty reasonable given that he's 30 next year. Thought it was at 3. A-Fag wrote an article on the contract (saying it was very fair) and he started 2016 @ 3 WAR. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/tigers-sign-perfectly-fine-zimmermann-to-perfectly-fine-deal/ E: That aging curve is far too gentle, though. Man, a lot has to go right for that contract to work out in the Tigers' favour. Lol @ Detroit.

Maico450 Verified Member Posted December 1, 2015 Posted December 1, 2015 When I first saw this deal for Happ, I thought OK, we can use a #5 starter and win a good number of games with the offence in the current lineup. Happ keeps the team in the game more often than not. Since then, I have come to think that Happ will improve simply because of how good our team Defence is now. Happ had a career era of 4.12 as a SP. Which is slightly better than average. Assuming that the great team defence could save half a run each game, we could be looking at 3.60 era from Happ. Now combine that with MLB top scoring offence, we should see a ton of wins in games he starts. Last year Happ pitched 7 innings 7 times, and 6+ innings 11 times. He has continued to keep his team in the game. Happ is not David Price, but he could turnout to be a 15 to 16 game winner next year.

It was freaking 64.5M. It's over double that going into 2016. They are in the top 1/3 of the league in spending.

Would seem like a no brainer for them especially if they believed in themselves and the changes they helped Happ make.

I said I had an initial emotional reaction after remembering the days of passing the hat around to try and sign Ervin Santana for 1 year last offseason, or failing to add a single player after leading the wild card by 3 games on July 31st last year. However I then calmed down and realized that this was actually a smart bit of business and I agreed with it. I still do, even after Price has signed with Boston for $4 billion over 89 years (roughly). Edited December 2, 2015 by Praxis

Last off season, the F/O did a good job of improving the team without spending more.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 top 5 payroll when you consider the Canadian dollar is s***. 31% of all revenue of all teams is pooled together and divided up evenly. On top of this MLBs Central revenue fund(acquired from things like national broadcasts) is disproportionately distributed with lower revenue teams getting a bigger slice of the pie. These are all US dollars.

I think the confusion may be that we were discussing things with Santana in 2013 but for the 2014 season? http://www.thestar.com/sports/bluejays/2014/03/12/ervin_santana_passes_on_challenge_of_al_east_with_blue_jays_to_sign_with_braves_griffin.html
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 Any of the 26 Bad votes want to redo their choice seeing what free agent pitching is going for? I'd take Happ for 3/36 over Shark 5/90 easy. Both have massive question marks.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted December 5, 2015 Author Posted December 5, 2015 Having said that, I should say I think Shark will rebound in San Fran.

A 1-2 punch of Stro/Shark followed by Estrada as a reliable #3 and we have ourselves a rotation that can compete for a championship with the offense we have.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted December 6, 2015 Posted December 6, 2015 Jays should try to give Ray Searage 5-10 million to come to Toronto. He's had huge success with Happ, Liriano, Burnett to name a few.
