THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2016 Posted June 7, 2016 lol wat There are plenty of articles out there with quotes with Callaway on the matter. His integration as the pitching coach coincides directly with the rise of Kluber, Carrasco, ect.
93 Jays Verified Member Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Great signing considering the numbers he's put up so far. A huge bargain. Seems like a completely different pitcher from last go around. Be interesting to see what his numbers look like by seasons end.

Not the nerdy new school definition of win.
Cyborg Verified Member Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Hes finally started pitching well. Awful to start the year.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 What is it with pitchers like Estrada and Happ? Consistently outperforming their peripherals. I keep waiting for Happ to get crushed, then he throws an 11K game despite never really being a K pitcher this year. Then we have this s*** Stroman who is underperforming.

Maybe peripherals aren't as good at predicting as some would think?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Happ, Estrada and Cecil for same $ as Price per year And no regrettable late contract years Good call by Shapiro/Atkins
Dr Negative Verified Member Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 What is it that the stats miss about some pitchers? Mark Buehrle did this for years and years. I have a hard time believing that it is all down the pitcher defense.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Maybe peripherals aren't as good at predicting as some would think? Correct. Applying stats to a single member of the population is only good for predicting the most likely outcome. The actual outcome will fall within a wide range of possible outcomes.

Maahfaace Verified Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Agreed. If only they could pry Mickey Callaway from Cleveland to be the new Pitching Coach. He turned Carrasco from a 5.79 K/9 spot starter in 2013 into a 9.4/10.5 K/9 ace in the following 2 seasons. That guy is a true gem. Does this apply to Walker as well with Sanchez' rise in K-rate this year? 5.9 to 8.2.....................................................................................
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted July 5, 2016 Posted July 5, 2016 Does this apply to Walker as well with Sanchez' rise in K-rate this year? 5.9 to 8.2..................................................................................... You mean while Stroman and Happ's K rates drop? How do you think the K rates of the Cleveland staff would look over here under him. There's a reason Happ is now predominantly a 2SM pitcher over here while watching his K rate plummet. He's also been quoted saying that he respects Pete Walker and his philosophies more than anyone.

Happ has the highest swinging strike rate of his career outside of 2012. 51.8% 4 seam and 17.1% 2 seam so not sure what you are getting at...

So the K rate dropping is all coincidence? For most of Happ's starts in 2016 he's been tossing 2SM in 2 strike counts just like Stroman. The swinging strikes are great but how many come after 2 strikes? Is there a way to figure that out? (genuinely asking). He's throwing the 4SM the least in his career and the 2SM the most in his career.
