jglicksm Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Just read this interesting rumor that David Price may prefer to return to Toronto, contrary to earlier reports: http://www.chatsports.com/toronto-blue-jays/a/blue-jays-rumors-david-price-prefers-play-toronto-24335 Obviously this is just a rumor, but I think this would be fantastic if it happened. I know everyone is critical of his playoff record, but he really was great in the ALCS, and was exceptional in the regular season. Along the same lines I came across this website which is pretty funny: http://www.anypricefordavid.com/ It let's you pledge what you'd do to get David Price back... check it out. I posted #366 . GO JAYS GO!!!
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 If David Price stays in Toronto, I, David Justice, agree to Be very disappointed I agree with David Justice.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 price is expected to be more expensive than grienke, yet grienke is the better bet going forward

jglicksm Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Author Posted November 24, 2015 price is expected to be more expensive than grienke, yet grienke is the better bet going forward purchase price (hard to avoid that pun) could be a big problem, especially if more than Greinke. I thought it was weird that they said North of $200 million. Rumors a few weeks ago were in the ballpark of 7 year deal, $30 million per year. I wonder if value (trying to avoid the word price) is coming down a bit and maybe duration of deal too? It's just a rumor that he's considering Toronto at this point, so maybe not worth reading into the contract side much at all...

nonamejays Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 A 8 year 200 million dollar contract wouldn't be terrible. He would likely generate 18-20 wins above replacement in the first 4 years alone, which would make the contract viable.

The opposite to Harper, Trout or Correa at FA before 25

Yes it would be terrible Rules to live by: 1 - never tweet 2 - don't sign a FA Ace in his 30's
TilsonBritoFan Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 I know, I know, this is crazy. This is a massive, huge, ginormous stretch. The only reason I thought of it is because of the reports hinting that Price wants to re-sign with the Jays. I don't think Shapiro would give him a 7 or 8 year deal however, even if Rogers opened the purse strings for it, so the only way Shapiro would re-sign him would be on a short term deal. So hear me out: There are a LOT of big name pitchers available this year, all competing for the same dollars. Next year the FA pitching market is much thinner. Much less competition for the big bucks, he could theoretically get more, and he'll still only be 31. What if Price was willing to sign a 1 year, $30 million dollar deal to pitch for the Jays? He could take out a large insurance policy on himself for this upcoming season in case he got hurt and his value dropped. And if he stayed healthy and pitched another year like this year, he could get even more money. I'm going to assume most of you would be on board with this, as the only issue most would have with giving price huge money is that later on he won't be worth it....is there anyone who would be against it? I realize it has about a 0.1% chance of happening, but how cool would it be if I ended up calling this?

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Price has a ton of milage on his arm and is in his 30's already. Pass. Jays need to develop their arms.

They would get the comp pick and the hype of the signing and the way the team would look next year would probably generate enough in sponsorship dollars and ad revenue to almost pay for the contract before the season started. It isn't going to happen though.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 He'd be retarded to do this, lol. But assuming he was, one way they could sort of make it appeal to him would be to have Toronto "insure" some portion of his expected contract this offseason by giving him a long term deal with an opt out after year 1. Say the market is looking like 7/$200 for Price. Offer him 7/$120 but with a large salary in year 1 and an opt out next offseason. Then if his elbow blows up in spring training he still has a decent long term deal.
BTS Community Moderator Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 Why would he sign for 1/30 instead of 8/210?
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 No 1/30 probably not, but I wonder what he would think about 1/40 or 1/50
nmrch Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 he'll make close to 30 million on average with a long term contract, so this makes no sense. Now if you're talking 60-70 million, that is closer to what he'd expect to justify the risk.
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 No matter what, something is brewing , this doesn't get leaked by the network which is owned with the team we love not to mention , for a reason , I believe this is posturing and shows Shapiro has more money than you think
Smokingjays1111 Verified Member Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 How about 5 125 , like cmon he's not going to do 1 year
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 1 year deal probably means $50M.

If David Price was coming off TJS in a season where he didn't pitch how much money do you think he gets if he tried to maximize $? I think some team would still give him $100 million over a 6-7 year deal.
