Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 My thoughts on various things in this thread. 1) We lost this trade, but not by much.. maybe a 6/4 loss. Pretty even, but we're on the bad side of it. 2) Osuna needs to start, and if LaCava doesn't think he can do it in the majors, you give that f***er some minor league starts. 3) I've totally lost my train of thought now. 4) Chavez could be decent for us, and if we do extend him, it had best be for $10M/year or less. 5) I've lost my train of thought again. 6) La Tortuga.
CJ-Freeway Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 2015: Price + Stroman for 15 total games Dickey Buehrle Estrada Hutchison Sanchez/Norris/Doubront/Copeland/Boyd who were all terrible 2016: Stroman for a full season Dickey Estrada Chavez Hutch really that different? Good point. But we were a .500 team before the arrival of Price so I think we're at that level now.
nextyear Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Personally, I enjoyed watching Osuna pitch regularly out of the bullpen in 2015. Since he is only 20 years old and has already had Tommy John surgery, I can understand why the Blue Jays are worried about him being a starter. The Blue Jays will need a strong closer if they are to do well in 2016 and in my opinion Osuna is the closer. One reason that the Kansas City Royals did so well in 2015 was because of their dominant bullpen. They blew very few games that they led going into the 8th inning.
Laika Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Well folks, this may be an indication that Shapiro will not be spending on a FA starter... that's BS if that's what they are doing. Well that's definitely the garbage clown way of looking at things
labadee Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I like Iwakuma. i like him too, but probably not going to happen
GD Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Stroman+ for Carrasco. Sign Gallardo, Sanchez as 6th starter. Mexioverload Sanchez+ for Carrasco. Acquire Jose De La Rosa. Stroman as 6th man like Lou Will / Mexican in training. Carrasco Osuna Chavez Estrada De La Rosa Stroman
Governator Community Moderator Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 f*** I liked Hendriks. Welcome back Chavez.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 I don't love the trade but I don't hate it. We lose some upside in Hendricks who could potentially be a cheap yet elite reliever for 4 years in order to add a much needed starting pitcher for 2016. Can Hendricks keep it going? I think he can probably do similar so it sucks to lose him. But not only did we need to add two starters in the offseason (which we have since done) but that was the minimum. We have very few upper minors guys who could come up and pitch in the big leagues. We need to add a s*** load of starting pitching. In no particular order I could see something like this for 2016: 1. Stroman 2. FA ??? 3. Estrada 4. Dickey 5. Chavez AAA- Hutchison And we probably need to add a couple more options.
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Good point. But we were a .500 team before the arrival of Price so I think we're at that level now. Dude you are way off. We were a below .500 before we acquired Hawkins. We are now below .500
Key22 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Sanchez seemed to be putting it together as a starter before he got hurt - 5 of his last 6 starts were quality starts and his worst start the entire year was 5 and 2/3 allowing 5 runs - which isn't exactly getting shelled. Hitters seem to have difficulty making good contact on him - he has tons of movement which accounts for the walks - but they're not really hitting the guy either. If he finds the command he could be terrific.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Well folks, this may be an indication that Shapiro will not be spending on a FA starter... that's BS if that's what they are doing. I don't think it's an indication of that. I do believe that they won't be spending much on a FA starter. I can see a Lackey type being signed for 2 years, but no one that comes anywhere close to a significant piece in my eyes.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 i like him too, but probably not going to happen Why?
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I honestly don't get it. We had him in the rotation, he wasn't that great, we let him go, he was "ok" in that big Oakland park so now we assume he's much better than before? I know what I have in Hendricks, no clue what I got in Chavez. You could apply that last sentence to a lot of things.

I think at minimum they should sign a guy like Gallardo, he's a capable major league starter who will give you some quality innings and get shelled on occasion, a lot better than throwing a total scrub out there like Blanton.
bronson44 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 I don't love the trade but I don't hate it. My first inclination too and one that seems to be shared by most, which is a sign it's a fair trade I guess.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Don't mind it. Chaves is a very solid 3-4 starter. Liam is a solid reliver who struggles against lefties when relives can be volatile. I mean can work out well.

Blanton is good.
taximan89 Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Ladies and gentleman, you 2016 Toronto Blue Jay starting rotation: stroman dickey estrada chavez hutchison

He was an elite reliever last year. 2.88 ERA, 10.8 K/9 and 1.8BB/9 vs LHH isn't struggling either lol.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Looking at the fangraphs game log for 2015, it seems that Jesse Chavez have several very good games and several bad games - http://www.fangraphs.com/statsd.aspx?playerid=5448&position=P The Oakland A's made so many errors that maybe that negatively affected his confidence. An improved defense behind him might do wonders for his performance in 2016 with the Blue Jays. Or maybe it won't ... It certainly is a big step down from David Price though. I want to think positively and hope that Jesse Chavez will be as big a surprise as Marco Estrada. lol please tell me I'm not alone
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Gibbons was going to.waste Hendrik's anyways
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Gibbons was going to.waste Hendrik's anyways I hate this way of thinking. Thats like saying we'll trade Alford for 10 cents on the dollar because Pillar is blocking him anyway!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 According to advanced stats Chavez pitched better on the road than at home. Yet his ERA was a run and a half greater on the road Explain please

Lol Hendrik's was not sold ten cents on the dollar Chavez is a reliable starter who take an even greater step forward this year
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Too bad he never got a chance here before. Glad there was a changing of the guard.
GoJays Verified Member Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Trade was about starter depth and man we needed that. Very few teams have ever gone thru a season using less than 7 starters. I liked Hendricks but I did not see him as a starter yet it fills a hole and opens one. Still looking for us to grab another starter and a reliever or two but budget is going to be tight.
